Every single ship of mine has a copy of polarize hull and a copy of attack pattern omega. I would consider those the minimum for anti-hold abilities. I thought you needed to spend points in pilot spec to get evasive maneuvers to break tractor lock, but I usually do that, too.
I have just evasive and that is enough.
Same here. I also use my 6th space DoFF slot for a cool down reduction.
If I can afford the science slot then I prefer to have Polarize Hull, but I consider it a luxury and certainly not a must. Evasive is more then enough.
This thread is just more of the same from the OP. There are two types of players in this game, those that look for advice when they struggle, and those that cry to have the game dumbed down to their level instead. The OP is obviously in the latter group, he either can't or won't put in the effort to get better so he wants the bar lowered to meet his own lack of ability.
Some of the Tholian ships create this grey cloud around themselves that does direct hull damage almost like Eject Warp plasma. If you're tractored inside that.....
The radiation field the Recluse Carriers emit? Huh... I hardly ever notice them. I usually fly out and shoot them.
Aw. I thought this was a complaint about NPCs with TBR making destructible projectiles obsolete.
I get that the game is all about counters, but why is it all or nothing? Is there no middle ground on this, especially since destructible projectiles are generally "heavy" weapons? Could I have some ability with a 30 sec+ cooldown that lets my destructible projectiles ignore TBR? Not asking to compete with B:FAW here. I just want to play with my big slow weapons.

Yeah it's a short range effect. Not really a major inconvenience, except that it sometimes takes out seekers.
This thread is lame. Tractor beams are, at most, a minor annoyance. There are so many counters it's ridiculous. Every ship captain gets evasive maneuvers...use it. If that's not enough there's polarize hull and attack pattern omega. I usually just sit in the tractor beam and destroy the ship...cause I'm lazy.
Everyone has an annoyance. I hate subnucleonic beam, but that doesn't mean I think it should be removed. You find the counter and use it...science team in the case of subnuke.
There are two things that bother me about the tractors.
First, they're not something we saw used in combat during the shows. The Defiant used it ONCE against a klingon ship, but that was the only time it was EVER used in combat by anyone who wasn't a Borg.
The other thing is that they do so much damage, they're more effective than actual WEAPONS are. Tractors shouldn't be doing ANY damage. They're meant for doing things like towing ships (such as when ENTERPRISE was towing STARGAZER). Not much value if you're going to destroy the ship you're towing.
+1 to this, also i've only seen 3 factions use them federation, borg and klingons (once in ds9)

Weaponizing tractor beams makes sense, though, as you simply rip the target apart. Even though nobody did that in the show it is reasonable to use them this way.
Otherwise, there shouldn't be a single science ability in this game as nobody used Tyken's rift, Gravity Wells, photonic shockwaves, viral matrizes etc. in combat either. There is no "Fire at will" in the shows either (the command "fire at will" leaves targeting at the tactical officer's discretion instead of ordering every single shot. And worf wouldn't have blindly targeted everything in range regardless of wether it makes sense or not to shoot at it )

Well one thing to keep in mind is that different captains might use their ship's equipment differently based on their own training. There is also that we are basing that off a very small degree of encounters, and captains of ships, compared to the vast amount of captains within starfleet that we do not hear from. If I remember right there were times in the series where captains had to disengage their tractor beams on a target, because of shearing forces that threatened to tear the tractored ship apart. Even in your own example with a disabled ship the Enterprise had to tow the ship at quite a reduced speed to keep the shearing forces on the Stargazer to a minimum.
Also to keep in mind towing a disable or non-moving ship is quite different, when compared to towing/tractoring a ship that is fully operational, since once that ship starts to pull against the tractor beam own pull it creates a shearing force on the full hence the damage effect. Just because something is created for non-combat actions does not innately mean it is not still dangerous, and can not be used as a potent weapon. Though I will say that I think the damage portion of the tractor beam should have it's damage based off the tractored ship's impulse speed.

Just because it wasn't shown, doesn't mean it's impossible... As mentioned above, tractor beams have the capacity to be used dangerously... Adaptation, ingenuity, thinking outside the box, is a quality all captains would require...

Funny, I don't really recall seeing many instances of Gravity Wll, Tkyen's Rift, Structural Integrity Collapse, Electromagnetic Pulse Probe, Timeline Collapse, Recursive Shearing, Graviton Spike, Motion Acceleration, Chroniton Mine Barrier, Nanite Health Monitor, Tripwire Drone, Uncertainty Burst, Paradox Bomb, and Mass Gravemetric Detonation (to name a few) in the movies and TV shows.
*shrug* The only time photonic fleet was ever seen in the shows was one episode of Voyager & its not at all likely that they did any damage either.
LOL and don't forget Tyken's Rift.
If I summon Tyken's Rift, is it THE Tyken's Rift? What if there are several mages using it at the same time?
In fact, there are no different career captains in the IP and "science " ships are frail weapon less things requiring escorts, but you know; WOW clone.
When I introduced STO to my cousin, I was an Escort jock. He was confused by the ship being a "Defiant " and not the majestic cruiser he and most Star Trek fans expect. He didn't respect my thief.

Also, as a friendly suggestion - Have you considered this game may not be for you? Seriously.

In all honesty, this is really the best option for the OP.
There are a few people like him that start threads that are all complaints and troubles. I know if a game gave me that much problem and I hated it that much, I would simply play something else.
I never understood why people that seem to hate this game so much continue to play it. It's not your job, if it sucks.. stop showing up.
Actually, I agree with many of the things people are saying as mockery.
I'd MUCH rather see the game play out more like in the shows and movies. Enough of the magic super powers. When they're made use of, it should work the way they would actually work. For instance, if a gravity well was generated by a science ship, it should affect EVERYTHING in range, friend and foe. It's a gravity well, a force of nature, it has no idea of friend or foe. Same with torpedo spreads and all the aoe abilities and weapons.
I'm for anything that improves the "realism" of the game.
As true as that is, and I can respect that you might want that type of game, as was said not everyone wants that or enjoys it. An I would be fine if something were put into the game that allowed such changes to be done based on a single player basis, where you toggle such a option on in your personal options to only affect you alone. Though then you look into where are the man-hours, time, and money going to come from to pay for the devs to create such a setting option for such a subset of players.
Edit: Though i will add that I would want to see a change to the way that space combat is done in that we do not just blow up when our hull is reduced to zero, but that we enter into a downed type state. Like that while in this downed state we only can use hul heals to heal our hull back to 50% the normal amount, or that another player could come an help us (kinda like in ground) an reive us thru heals or other actions, while a enemy could just use a few more attacks to destroy us.
Actually none of the shows ever stayed close to real science, one example Kirk's crew bombarding a planet with UV because "it was harmless to humans" which was known to be false when the episode was written. Many Trek fans have this illusion that the show is somewhat close to scientific accuracy but it just isn't true, and never was.
I think seaQuest was a lot closer to being scientifically accruate.
^ I forgot all about Sea Quest. That was a neat little show. Now that we're almost in the time that it took place (2019, if memory serves), I'm wondering how far off we were in trying to predict the future, because history has shown that we're pretty horrible at it. lol

It's sad, but typical.
Exactly!
PLEASE don't give them ideas. You just know that thing would sell like hotcakes...
