It seems that we have some very passionate people in this thread, on both sides of the line. Both good and bad, smart and harebrained ideas have been put forward. To those who have stepped up to defend their opinion, I applaud your determination.
I will now ask this question: At the end of the day, can anything you acquire within Star Trek Online put food on your table or cloths on your back? To my knowledge, the answer is no. The only people that can legally make a real-world profit off of anything in the game are those who own it or developed it. There are only a few exceptions that I can think of. One would be if a player were to sell off their account to another player entirely. Another would be people who make monetized videos of in-game content online. If there are other legal means of making real-world profits from the game, please feel free to enlighten us all.
It is from this perspective that I made my initial argument. All content within the game, from the stories, to the characters, to the gear, to the ships, is meant to be played with and enjoyed by the players. The developers of the game put a great deal of time and energy into making that content. It makes sense that some of that content be offered by the developers at a reasonable price. Those willing to pay that reasonable price are at liberty to pay it and support the game they like. I have done just that. I have spent some budgeted recreation money here and there and even opened a fair number of the lockboxes and promo packs in the hopes of getting the grand prize.
But I refuse to pay an unreasonable and ridiculous price for a single piece of content offered, not by the developers of the game, but by a fellow player on the game’s gray market. I will not spoil my enjoyment of a game by sacrificing my time, livelihood, and happiness on what is ultimately a digital toy. I have a job to do, bills to pay, and family and friends to spend time with.
In short: I have a life. And as much as I would like it, I don’t need your overpriced bling.
If you're not going to use it, it's pointless. The ships in your inventory don't do anything. You're either using them or they're a waste of time effort and money to acquire them UNLESS you intend to trade them for something you will actually use.
When did I say i wouldn't use the ships that I collect? I have extensively flown every single ship that I own, and believe me, I own a lot of ships. I also buy low and sell high so any boxed ships that I have are only temporarily in my possession.
I think at this point, you should either make a factual statement or just admit that you don't know what you're talking about.
*facepalm* Ok did you even READ this thread before jumping in? The topic is SPECIFICALLY about people who HOARD the boxes unopened for the purpose of using them as economic assets only as if the gathering of virtual resources is the point of the game. They DO NOT INTEND to ever open and fly them, and THAT is why I and others say they are wasted and basically useless when treated that way.
Clearly that isn't you, so why are you arguing?
Ok, even this post is dead wrong. They always end up selling or trading away those ships. The argument that they are supposedly "being wasted" has already been discussed and debunked. It's a legitimate asset that is later traded or sold for the purpose of purchasing something else. Eventually it get's opened.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.
The "Grand Irony" is the release is working exactly as intended. The point was never to make everyone happy, it was (and always will be) to make a select few feel special. That select few including those who are very lucky, those who put lots of real money into the game, or those who slave in the fields like peasants day in and day out generating Ec (and with a tip of the hat to those who milk billons of Ec out of other players in a free-fire marketplace that makes the Wild West look positively draconian in its regulation...).

Right, because most MMO economies are closely regulated. Get off your high horse.
You should have edited your picture and replaced the word 'Cookie' with 'Connie'.
More appropriate for this Thread.

MOST of them at least have listing or selling fees so that when you buy master keys in the morning for 4.5 million and sell them for 5.2 million that afternoon you don't pocket 100% of the difference and at least SOME currency drains out of the system. Yes even by MMO standards this place is a free for all.
My high horse is evidently named "not being ignorant of the larger industry".
Let me guess, the noble and selfless Cardassians are the number one race in Star Trek.

Well unfortunately your buddy mentioned it in a post IN THIS THREAD that the Ferengi were the Number 2 race in Star Trek. That begs the question 'Who is Number One?'

I repeat I have T6 TOS Connie.
I am a casual player that with luck can get online 1 or 2 hours a day and I am very busy and so no longer very social.
I used to lament the fact that STO is an MMO but no longer.
The point is if someone like me can get T6 TOS Connie, then anyone should be able to by following the instructions I found here on the Forum.
The longer one Waits the more expensive it's going to be and no amount of forum posting is going to get anybody a T6 TOS Connie any faster.
This Thread is not about how horribly capitalistic this game is and how some players are hoarding and whether little Timmy will ever walk again.
It's about people trying to poke Cryptic with the morality stick to force them to put the ship in the store.
Now where's my cookie damn it.
