You're taking the wrong view. Players don't hold onto ships out of spite or greed. To leverage more EC, you need to have a strong base. One of the ways to hold tons of EC is to hold some of it in items which includes ships. Maybe some players are happy with just one 23rd Century Ship. Others want ten of them. Others want 10 23rd Century ships, 5 Annoraxes, 1 Voth Bulwark, 15 Jem'Hadar Bugships, 10 Zahls, 10 Astikas, and every other ship in the game. They don't acquire these things by not being smart and giving stuff away.
The wrong view? These items are VIRTUAL TOYS, their value exists solely in the form of A.) being played with and enjoyed or B.) traded for virtual currency with which to buy other virtual toys to play with. They have ZERO value beyond those two uses. So if someone just hoards them, the entire point of their existence is lost.
Nope, they have a real world value of over $175 since that is what people are paying for them. Fiat currency is "VIRTUAL MONEY" just like digital goods are "VIRTUAL TOYS" so I guess that makes perfect sense.
I get paid quite well to "THINK ALL DAY" and mold blocks of logic into digital artifacts that companies pay my employer thousands of dollars a year to license.
Did you miss the part where the only people who can make real money on this item is the game company? You can't sell it to other players for even so much as a dime, or cash in your game currency for the real thing. Only the company can do that. Unless you're admitting here you're breaking the law by selling for cash?
I really don't get the hoarding mentality. The point of in-game items is to enjoy playing the game with them. The point of in-game currency and in-game item trade is to get items to use to play and enjoy. NONE of it has ANY other value but in-game enjoyment. If you're never going to fly it, why have it? If you're never going to spend it on items you're going to play, why have it and why seek more of it? It's useless beyond what it does to enhance your play of the game. It has absolutely no other function.
If you're seeking pretend money for its own sake because you like pretending to be an investment banker, why aren't you playing a virtual stock market game or something? I mean, sure it's your time and effort to waste but it really seems silly to make a side portion of the game that only exists to facilitate the main game the focus of obsession.
As for me, I don't care about what the value of items are in the game beyond the difficulty they present to me gettign what I want for my characters to play. I want a T6 Connie because the TMP Enterprise is my first love in Star Trek, otherwise I wouldn't care. I never went for other lockbox or promo ships, I couldn't care less for the holy bugship or whatever, but I care about this one because I've loved that ship for decades and it perfectly fits my main character's style. When I have one, it'll be a mix-n-match of 2280s exterior and 2260s interior and I will never take her out of that ship unless a better version of the same thing becomes necessary for endgame.
The investment mentality completely puts the cart before the horse. The items and the currency exist to facilitate gameplay, not the other way around. I can't understand how people can be so delusional to think it has any other purpose or that seeking it for its own sake is anything but a waste of time. Play the game, enjoy the game, the points don't matter only the experience.

I wish that was true, but sadly it's not- at least with respect to the 'use the ship, enjoy it' measure.
There's a class of players who gain their greatest enjoyment from the collection of in-game wealth. Yes that in itself does nothing for them- but they still want it and the higher they can pile the number the better. To them the T6 Connie is boxed wealth to be counted and perhaps later traded for greater wealth. This puts them into direct PvP mode against players who want the ship to play as they buy up the boxes, and only resell them at increasing profit driving up the costs beyond the typical player.
There's another class of player who gain their greatest enjoyment from denying other players something they enjoy. It's amazing how much they are willing to lose in time and resources to do this and I don't know how common they are in STO but they do exist.
Besides these two, there are those who know that good stuff when it comes along is expensive- and they too hoard things others could be having fun with against that raining day when they have to pay the two pipers above their blood money.
MMO design actually puts incentives in for the above type of players in an effort to gain the widest player base. They don't want to turn away any customer- including those who negatively affect others especially in such indirect ways as these.
So these are the people responsible for the low ratio of played Connies in this promotion. Look upon them and weep.

I call those 3 types Rothschild/JP Morgan wannabes. Folks who wanna be those evil banker types that wreck things for everyone....but, since these folks in game are just a bunch of sad, neckbeards stuffing their faces with Doritos and Mountain Dew, trying to find some way to feel superior, but too much of a wuss to do it face to face.
Oh, I wana do more than weep, Sir. And it involves a large, knobbly thing the size and shape of an agave cactus to them.
It's more likely a much more modern mentality than that. The picture resembles those found of women in anime or comic books- the mindset that rails against that is very different from the old fashion and dying 700 Club mentality.
In this case however, I'm seen worse in the game itself. So it's rather odd to see it here. I wonder if he wants the Orions and cropped jackets removed from the game?

It's a barter economy but all things on the exchange and in trade do have value now, not only at the point when they are used.
I've traded keys and EC for a half-dozen lock box and lobi ships (not a Connie). The keys had value, the ships had value, both had value before they were used.
I "hoarded" those keys until I wanted a new ship. You've probably saved up EC to buy something yourself. You most likely don't donate all of the EC and dil you make to space charity. You "hoard" it until you're ready to spend it. HOARDER!
Sorry for those who care about that ship. I might be on the minority but I think the price is very sentimental value and the design as one of the ugliest ships PWE ever designed. For me is a non issue whatsoever.

All the JJ stuff is completely horrid. One would have to pay me to fly any of those things, and it would need to be a significant amount (say enough for me to quit RL work).

In every online game I've played since the early 90s, there's always these people who try to dictate to the other players HOW they should play the game and HOW they should enjoy it. As if we weren't capable of deciding that for ourselves.
I'm one of the people in this game who find enjoyment in collecting virtual wealth and I'll continue to do so regardless of what you think about it. You may call me whatever names you like but in the end it only boils down to one thing - you have no T6 Connie and I have multiple of them. Who's the loser now? Oh, btw... your annoyingly intrusive pictures have found a new home on my AdBlock list.

Case in point, matching two of my three types of player. Those who seek in-game wealth beyond need, and those who seek to harm other players as part of their enjoyment. As he said- to him, this is victory. This is why he plays.
And he makes Cryptic money, so let him play is what they'll do. The lockboxes and Promo ships are more for him than they are us.
The best thing the larger player base can do is to not feed this type of creature in the most extreme cases and never buy anything in the Grey Market (i.e. not on the exchange). They will still rule on the exchange, but at least they can't yank anything above the Cap and at that level are fighting only between themselves. Let trekpuppy choke on his connies.
Sadly, the larger player base isn't very aware and certainly isn't unified. So in the end, the well intentioned players lose.
But I at least can ignore them. I have never bought anything from the Grey Market, and I shall never buy anything from the Grey Market. Nothing is worth my dealing with this kind.

Actually, GOT a T6 connie...good friend of mine was lucky enough to win THREE packs, when she bought 4 or 5 RD packs, and she kept one for herself, of course; and offered me one, and another friend of hers the third. It's a little something called friendship, and friends helping each other out, Mr. Puppy. And the fact you got several, and doing NOTHING with them, just dangling them like a carrot to us poor peons, like some dyspeptic Rockefeller, only makes you appear like some egotist going "hey, I'm sooooo kewl!!!" I go nothing against folks making big EC or real $....but it's how one gets it that can steam my clams, not to mention being all "na na na!!!" about it seems a bit infantile, in my opinion.
And, that ya got me blocked makes me feel very proud, yo! ~does happy dance~
You have a very strange idea of what **** looks like.
Infantile images of over-sexualized scantily clad women kinda fits the bill to me. To each their own though.
Over-sexualized? You know, back in the bad old days, pre-PC, when we could actually say what we thought, I would have openly questioned your orientation. Now, sadly, I'll have to settle for calling you a prude.

As I mention, it can be a very modern thing, very PC, very Feminist. Far from being a prude, they are also likely to rail against TRIBBLE-shaming. So like, everything is on top of the table- but no one should draw it sort of thing.
So your fantasy chick can be a TRIBBLE as she owns her sexuality, but she can't be drawn wearing a steel bikini.
Or in this case perhaps, you can run the Orion chick in traditional slave girl clothes in game, but not draw her.

kinda makes me wonder how they react to even a fanservicey pic.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.

While I'd agree with much of the sentiment, it's not like TOS is not rife with that sort of thing anyway....
