But that person isn't going to be me. Therefore, I'm getting it for free. Someone else isn't. But I don't care about them.

But you still aren't getting it for free, because it costs you time, and time has value. That was my core point.
Maybe a day or two if I decided to start out with 0 EC, depending on my mood, and how volatile the market is. I'm also not desperate enough for a T6 Connie/D7/T'liss to pay Day One prices for them, I'll likely wait for the market to settle down before shelling out large amounts of EC, and even then I might get the T'Liss (if that). I already have a Fleet T5-U K'tinga so I'm not particularly interested in the T6 D7.

Are you talking about playing the exchange? 0-750 mil/1 billion mil in "a day or two" seems unlikely to me even if you're exceptional at playing the market, but if you can do that, bravo, can you tell me your secrets? ;p

Or do you mean "24-48 hours of actual play time" by that, spread out over a longer period?
But the point is, I have a lot of EC. Even if I didn't want to spend my current capital on one of these ships, I am familiar enough with the exchange and the spending habits of people on the exchange I am quite confidant my net gains would be enough to purchase one of these ships in about a week (two at most).

This makes me think you're talking about 20-50 hours of actual play spread over week or so. So we're basically talking a full-time job. I don't have that kind of time to spend on this game, unfortunately.
Consider that your time, depending on your career and level of education, can be worth anywhere from 4 to 400 bucks an hour. Now, sure, for some people, they want to play the game and have fun grinding up the EC anyways, so great for them. Some of us don't have that luxury, and even for those that do, it is perfectly valid for them to be unhappy about having something they have wanted for a very long time gated behind a mechanic like this.

It's perfectly valid for them to be unhappy, but it's not my problem that they're bad with money (either real or virtual money), and the barrier to entry to getting filthy rich in EC is extremely low. Oftentimes I get rich using other people's EC, not my own.

I'm not sure I agree with you about the barrier to entry, but I don't disagree that it's not your problem that other people can't afford it. (except -maybe- to the extent that if enough people get disillusioned with things like this, it will hurt the long-term health of the game.) I replied to your post mostly just to point out that spending time to earn something means it isn't free, then just kind of trailed off into my own general complaints about the situation. Sorry if I gave the impression it was all directed at you.
I also think people are overestimating how available these are going to be. It's a limited time offer. That means the supply is finite, and this is a ship that has been highly desired by a lot of players since the game's inception. It's not like the bug ship or the Annorax, which were off-faction ships with niche appeal.

People said that with the Kelvin Timeline ships too. That it's "overestimated" how available the ships will be and that they'll never be sold on the exchange. But this theory, like that one, will eventually be proven as incorrect.

Except the Kelvin ships -aren't- a limited time supply. When the lockbox retires, eventually the ship will go into the more general lockbox, meaning there will always be -some- supply. We don't have that same guarantee for the promo ships. If this is a one-off, then eventually, there literally just won't be anymore to buy. Now, the obvious demand also suggests that maybe the people who buy these and sell them might buy more of them, and so it might taper off at a similar rate anyway, but my point isn't that it's definitely going to be different, my point is just that we can't just assume it will be the same.

Assertion, argument, whatever it is exactly a true scotsman fallacy.

Also, I've been arguing for over 3 decades, I am more than capable of determining what is or isn't one on my own.

You have demonstrated in other threads that you don't even know the definition of the words you use, so I don't particularly care what you think about your ability to argue.

You cannot have a fallacy without an argument, and you can't have an argument that doesn't have a conclusion drawn from premises.

Why am I reminded of this classic?

Well, whatever happens with the game, at least that made me laugh, so thank you. ;p

zero. i've never tried for a lockbox or other lottery ingame.

@heavensrun, I'm terms of playing the market Iconians is talking about flipping items. Watch for someone listing an item really low than but it and relist at a normal price. The most common ones are when people forget a decimal point and sell a ship for 20m instead of 200m, you can pull an instant 180m profit on that.

Then there are things that sell cheap during prime hours when supply is up but raise in price overnight when supply drops off. This is a variation of the "second mover" advantage in business. Let your competition move first (prime hours) and you either but and relist of they sell low, or craft and sell low of they sell high. Either way, you get the profit, not them.

And he doesn't mean grinding for hours. He means spendin 10 to 15 minutes searching and posting items. Then coming back the next day 24-48 hours later, and having a few hundred million ec.

You get 40 slots on the auctionhouse. To make Say 800 million in one day you only need to average 20 mil per slot. One lucky 180m flip means you only need 15m average in the other slots. If you use two characters you only need 7.5m instead of the 15.

Selling drops and grinding is hard. Playing the market doesn't have to be.

The Constitution Class is TOO OLD to be at Tier 6. And TOO SMALL! This makes no logical sense in the game, especially in the context of how the ship tier system works. How in the heck can a Constitution class vessel, that was retired aeons ago, still be flown, let alone out perform an Odyssey, as well as go toe to toe with a Borg Tactical Cube. This is a museum piece! I can't understand how Cryptic would EVER tie their own game mechanics and lore into knots like that.

    What gives?

    ;)

Your usual snark aside, the ship might look a bit tiny next to other T6 cruisers. :p

I might buy a box with the 500 I get per month. Other than that, if I happen to zen out a bit might get one more, but truth be told, fan or not, this is total TRIBBLE.

Completely money grab fan or not.

Presenting the T6 Connie during the 50th anniversary of Star Trek was nothing more and nothing less than a carefully timed strategy made by people in business suits who get paid substantially more than a "low life neckbeard".

I suppose if you want to look at it that way, yes, it costs me time. But if you really want to make time the measurement, absolutely nothing in the world (or universe) is free, since literally everything costs time.

Not actual playtime, I'd say maybe a good 6 to 8 hours each day. But yes, I usually play the exchange and have for years. I've developed skills and continue to learn and adapt my strategies as time goes on, as market forces pretty much dictate you need to evolve to compete in the market, or you fail.

There is no get rich "secret" to playing the exchange. I made the conscious choice years ago that I was not going to be a victim of STO's player-driven economy. Instead of spending my time on the forums complaining about how unfair promo items are in the hope that Cryptic will lower the bar to accomodate me, I decided to make the system work for me.

Making a few hundred million in a day or two is what I would consider "average", but there are some days I end up losing way more money than I gain, and there are some days that are unusually more profitable than others. It's all about taking advantage of opportunities and cutting your losses when something becomes unprofitable.

There is no "instant gratification" button for playing the exchange unless you actually want to dig into your wallet and sell Master Keys or whatever for EC.
This makes me think you're talking about 20-50 hours of actual play spread over week or so. So we're basically talking a full-time job. I don't have that kind of time to spend on this game, unfortunately.

That's just a ballpark figure. I have no real burning desire for any of these ships, so I'm not going to invest maximal effort into acquiring them. If I wanted them badly enough, I would likely spend a good 4 days, 6-8 hours each day playing the exchange, and then farming dilithium and converting it to zen to increase my over-all EC yield.

Or I would just dig into my rainy day fund and buy them on Day One for Day One prices, then spend the next few months making up those losses.

As always, it would really depend on what the market looks like that day. Some days are better than others, but if I make 200 million in one day, I'd call that a good day.
Except the Kelvin ships -aren't- a limited time supply. When the lockbox retires, eventually the ship will go into the more general lockbox, meaning there will always be -some- supply. We can assume it'll be the same because the market works both ways. There are going to be plenty of players who will sit on their T6 Connies after the promo is over in the hopes it'll appreciate in value. If I was interested in the promo, that's what I would do.

If that's what I would do? You can be sure there are probably a good 20-30 other players with the same idea as me. So, the supply of T6 Connies will likely not go anywhere.

I did this with STO because the market is smaller, it isn't as volatile, and it's easier to predict market behaviors.

The stock market on the other hand is a lot bigger, it's more brutal, and I don't have the education (or desire) to break into day trading.

STO's markets are like a little pink tricycle, the real world markets are like a complicated nuclear aircraft carrier by comparison.

However, as an educational tool, STO can teach someone a lot about economics. :)

I'm pretty sure the families that rely on them for a steady paycheck look upon them favorably. Kind of like lawyers or marketing. They're fun to rag on and it's popular to hate them, but the world would probably grind to screeching halt without them.

You mean special interest, and protecting folks like big oil and big pharma from competition and keeping status quo going as is a 'good thing'? And the big wigs don't ever have to worry about money, they get enough for dozens of life times. Hell, we got tons of lawyers and businessmen in government/politics, and approval is going lower, and the world's become a $^#& hole.

@daendae, during this rnd promotion boxes of materials will sell for virtually nothing. Buy as many as you can afford. Sell them next time we have an upgrade event.

Also, look at the current lockbox. What items are highest demand that you can afford? There will be a window after the box is gone before they appear in the infinity box. Buy now and sell in that window.

Edit: I don't just mean the rnd packs that drop the ships, even the post-queue rnd material boxes will drop in price now and go up during the next upgrade weekend.

I plan to buy packs and sell them on the exchange, then buy the new connie

    Probably none.

I'd have happily bought them all from the C-Store, but I'm not a fan of single-character unlocks. I do gamble on Lock Boxes (using EC's to buy Master Keys) when I feel like it, but the R&D Promo Packs tend to be a bad place to try and break even (using EC's from selling the contents)... so it's less of a minigame and more of an outright resource sink. It's disappointing that I won't ever command a Constitution, D7, or T'Liss (unless someone actually posts one of the Exchange AND forgets a zero or two AND I happen to click fast enough to buy it ), but that's their call. Definitely no Zen purchases from me on this one, though someone might get a few EC's out of me for a R&D Promo Pack or two.

Serious question: how does one make hundreds of millions of EC in one day? I'm trying to save up EC for the Kelvin ships but I'm new to dealing on the exchange, so apologies for the noobish question.

Simple answer is, you don't. Unless you are rich and willing to spend money on lockbox keys and then selling them- that is perhaps the fastest way to get lots of EC.

I personally don't have that money to spend (but sooner or later LTS monthly stipend will add up) so what I do is farm admiralty missions. I tried some of the other ways - Tour the Galaxy mission (it didn't really work for me) and the EC grind foundry mission (the mission actually kept on breaking for me after getting past Level 2 :P), but farming Admiralty missions has probably gotten me more EC than I ever had before. Another way is through the time-honoured practice of buying items cheaply on the Exchange and then selling them for a higher price, especially when demand for that item goes up because then you can make a greater profit (@iconians and @galvinruneblade, points to you).

Getting lots of EC takes time, especially if you are trying to get the 300 million so EC needed for the Vengeance or some of the other KT ships :)

Seeing the stats now, I may try 8 times. The Klingon Intel version+ cloak and the Romulan Pilot verions + Cloak are formidable.

The Connie's the weakest of the bunch and it's still an unabashed BEAST.

Thanks for the answer, daendae. My problem with farming admiralty missions is that I simply don't have the ships to do them with; I only have a few low-level freebie ships I got just from leveling up my new toon, hence very few admiralty ship cards. But I do what few I can. I've also been selling stuff on the exchange; the other night I sold a key and made over 5 mil from it, so that helped.

Biggest problem is - will it sell for less than the 750 million ec cap. I think any priced at that for the first weekend will be gone in seconds from the exchange.

Tempting but, I just brought a T6 after a month of grinding my characters, so no zen left. I brought it, I use it.

Expect for the 500 stipend that just popped up...............THAT'S MINE!!! Ykb9TDM.png

You never heard about the tax I just invented?

Sadly, I must take that stipend from you... ;)

Hmm.. now there's an idea... tradeable Zen stipends for LTS... muahahaha
It's not you- it's me. I just need my space.

Being critical doesn't take skill. Being constructively critical- which is providing alternative solutions or suggestions to a demonstrated problem, however, does.

Champions and neverwinter both have crates of tradeable dilithium equivalent and lobi equivalent in their lockboxes. Directly tradeable zen is exchange only. I think I'd like to keep it that way. Dilithium is already a weak currency.

I'll buy one 4 pack for 1000 Zen ($10) and that will be it. RNGs really hate me, but I'll give it a try 4 times. Figure, might as well use 2 months of my stipend for it. So not really 'costing' me anything.

5, but only because I need 50 lobi for the Boolean gun.
