I'm going to go see "Beyond" again this Friday, with a friend.
It'll be my third time.
I haven't gone to the same movie three times in it's first run, since The Wrath of Khan came out (1982).

In that render, yeah it doesn't look too bad, be a nice Tier 6 Star Cruiser, the free one you can get before those other things stole the name off it.
In the render they used for the teaser, it's a rust-bucket pile of scrap someone stole out of a shipyard to avoid getting thrown into an institution for being daft enough to try buying it.
I still think this weird design is purposely intended to be a major part of the storyline.
It's possibly some kind of joint venture between the Fed's and the Klingons and the reason the ship seems 'dated' is because it is a really old, rejected class-type that never went into production.
It's the type of ship one wouldn't mind letting ones enemy's on, because the technology is so dated as to be useless if stolen.
I'm hoping that the Discovery is intended to be a space born attempt at a "Nimbus III-The Planet Of Galactic Peace" and the whole point of the series is to show how, despite nobody really believing it will work, the mixed crew actually manages to make it succeed.
Though the early episodes will be rife with turmoil, we slowly see the Starfleet and Klingon Defense Force crew members begin to work together as the series progresses.
The one thing I worry about is that they find an Actor (male or female) that has the chops to carry off being the captain of this kind of crew.
Be even more interesting if they pick someone who looks like they wouldn't have a chance, but turns out to be perfect for the job.
I could see both sides putting the worst of the worst up as the crew, in an attempt to scuttle the idea, only to have it all work out in the end.
Kind of like a "Dirty Dozen" in space.
The Starfleet-Klingon theory doesn't hold water, dave. This is set between ENT and TOS, a time period when the Feds and Klinks were in cold war if not actively fighting each other. That didn't end until the Khitomer Accords.
"Great War! / And I cannot take more! / Great tour! / I keep on marching on / I play the great score / There will be no encore / Great War! / The War to End All Wars"

Yeah, at the time I typed that, we didn't know positively which period of time the series was going to be in.
Would still be an interesting tale though.

Then how did the Defiant create a warp field? Its nacelles are snugged right up against the hull.
Meanwhile, the Discovery as shown thus far does have empty space between the nacelles - that secondary hull isn't the flat slab McQuarrie envisioned, but rather has a flat segment between two angled bits that lead up to the nacelles.
I suggest you watch TrekYards. Star Trek ship designers actually discuss this issue. The nacelles on the Defiant are not snugged right up against the hull. If you watch closely they are actually just below the underbelly of the ship. If you look closely you will see that the space between the Bussard collectors is empty. The warp field is generated under the ship.
Hate to burst all 3 of your bubbles. But Beyond took a 14% hit in the 1st weekend compared to Into Darkness. So that alone was already a decline. Then they took a larger hit of nearly 60% second weekend drop, a significant decline when compared to the last two films. Thanks to Jason Bourn knocking it off the 1st spot. So it couldn't last 2 weeks at #1. Don't forget Suicide Squad comes out this weekend. So that will really knock it down. So it will get to say hello to #3.
I highly doubt Beyond will gain much more. Beyond was a bomb.
Financial earnings is not a reliable indicator of the quality of a movie. But please, spin whatever narrative you want to justify your blind zealotry.
Beyond is by far the best JJ verse movie (not Kelvin Timeline because it doesn't make sense - that universe was already different by the time the Kelvin was created). The problem is that Into Darkness was so bad that fans are worried Beyond will be as bad as it was. I've told several of my friends that Beyond was a very good Star Trek movie but they will not go see it. They want to wait until it is released on BLU-RAY.
The pilot episode has not run yet and people are already proclaiming they don't like the ship?
Gee, that didn't take long, did it?
The only thing the "trailer" showed was the ship. It's design is a significant departure from previously seen Federation designs (appearing to be a hybrid of traditional Klingon-Federation vessels).
It's actually based off an old unused Ralph McQuarrie design from 1977.

Explain Cardassian and Tholian ships. They don't even have nacelles or Bussard collectors.
The real reason for it is that Roddenberry and Franz Joseph were fighting over royalties so Roddenberry and Andrew Probert made up that rule about line-of-sight and even numbers of nacelles as a "f*ck you" to Joseph via his odd-numbered nacelle designs from the Star Fleet Technical Manual (Hermes-class, Saladin-class, Federation-class).

Don't put Mr. Probert in on the wrong side of that tale.
Gene was the only one who was annoyed with Mr. Joseph.
Gene alone created the "Official Ship Rules" and just passed them on to Andy Probert.
And Mr. Roddenberry was mostly annoyed with himself for not having the insight to make sure the copyright of the Tech Manual was his.
He was also battling with NBC at that time over creative control of the show and ended up selling off his part for big bucks when NBC offered.
He later realized that he probably shouldn't have been so quick to let it go and was always trying to finagle a way to get some aspect of it back to collect more royalties.
Thus the sneaky way in which he added words to the main theme to get some money out of it.
Anyway, Mr. Probert was just an artist working for a paycheck back then and had very little say in the design concepts.
It just happened that what he drew, Gene liked.

This... Actually doesn't look half bad.
