Internet activists are the worst, yeah. They're smug af.

Nah, not really. I don't have a problem with them, myself. They're far less disruptive than activists, really.
I never thought about it that way. Yeah, I guess a yes-man cretin is better than a no-man smart aleck.
Yeah, white knights rarely use cyberbullying and insults against people who disagree. Activists, though? That's usually what keeps their message from getting through. Too many of them are unhinged.
In all of my entire time opening lockboxes... I've probably opened over a hundred over the lifetime of this game by now... I've scored exactly one grand prize ship... and not the one I wanted either.
But I'm at peace with that, because I stopped trying for the grand prize a long time ago. I got my ship box (Vaadwaur Manasa) trying for R&D Doffs, and I still haven't opened it yet.
Why don't I try for ships? Because I've seen the threads where people have bought a pile of keys and documented what they get out of them. I already know the odds are really, really bad. Any serious study of statistics applied to probability should teach the axiom that 'The House Always Wins'. Just because the probability is coming in at 200 to 1, doesn't mean that winning box will necessarily be in the 200 I opened. That's what makes it random. If you could predict it, then it wouldn't be random.
But because I'm trying for something with better odds, like a DOFF pack or even just Lobi which is a sure thing, I've gotten a few cool things over the years.
The real prize this time around in my opinion is that Na'Khul science ship... and it's a Lobi purchase. It stuns me that Cryptic would actually put the 'better' ship in there, but they did. I'm still thinking hard about depleting my crystal balance.
Buying more than 20 keys at a time is sheer folly, IMO. Buying more than a couple at a time when they're not on sale is even more madness. So far I've resisted the impulse this time around because my outflow is heavy enough as it is lately.
Fair point blue geek. In this case the science ship is a power house and I agree that you're at least guaranteed it after opening that many boxes. Still a bit too expensive imo though.
Also in your case, you have the benefit of hindsight; he didn't. Yes any reasonable fairly intelligent person knows the house always wins but then again, I see poor sob's go to the local convenience store every day to gamble with the scratch tickets. Does that make it, right? No, but it's still allowed I guess. All I can say is that I hope the laws do change to ensure players are properly informed before they participate in chance box games. That would be a good first step.
Yes, I made some assumptions but the "it's his problem" attitude is just blissful ignorance. When people spend unseemly amounts of money on chance boxes, it effects us all indirectly.
No, it does not. You are making the assumption that the person who spent this money has a 'problem'. When in fact what may be 'pocket change' to one person, may be a lottery win to another. I know people who regularly spend thousands of pounds in casino's; they do it because they enjoy it, and because (to them) it is a form of entertainment. They have the money to do it, and therefore they can. Your own assumption is based upon the argument that such actions are the responsibility of society as a whole, when it is in fact not.
But let us assume for a moment that the OP could 'not' afford to deal with the repercussions of his spendful actions. You would suggest that as a result, that we, and the rest of the society may have to deal with these repercussions; indeed you suggest that such actions may result in jail and/or such a person being placed into a mental health institution.
Logic however would suggest that once a person gets their 'fingers burnt' that they will not undertake an act where they are unable to deal with (or afford) the resultant consequences.
For example, cryptic is incentivized to continue creating lock boxes because they are a veritable cash cow and the vicious cycle continues.
You suggest that Cryptic's actions have a negative effect upon the STO community - whilst in fact the opposite is true. Those who can afford to spend large amounts of money on keys and lockbox items are the same people who pay for the upkeep of the servers in addition to staff wages. Those who cannot afford to partake in such actions, will inevitably learn from their mistakes.
The rest of your exposition is basically 'word salad' regarding a number of irrelevant sociological, moral and political ideals, and have therefore been disregarded.
If you check the gamepedia.com sto wiki and look at past lockbox chances your avg chance to win a ship is about 1 in 200. Those of us that have been playing for years we learned long ago to sell keys, farm EC,make EC from crafted items to get the ships and items from boxes that you want. The only thing I open boxes for is the lobi for things you can't get on the exchange or trade channels. $20 worth of keys will make you about 90million these days and is much more cost effective for getting what you want. For those of us that go the usually cheaper garanteed route for stuff we thank those that spend insane amounts of cash so we get the stuff from the exchange.
It's just a bad idea to open boxes in hopes of getting a specific ship; most of the time, boxes drop DOff's or gear anyway, so those are the items you should be looking for. TBH, it's actually more cost effective now to craft your own gear and upgrade it than to get it from boxes, except that there are some unique non-craftable items in boxes that the lifers would like to have.
I just personally took advantage of the key sale again, so I can open another type of box and enjoy the anticipation of a surprise. Also, I'm kinda OCD even in gameplay, so I'm doing an informal survey of each available faction lockbox as a side hobby. To my dismay, Cryptic has been producing new boxes nearly as fast as I can afford to explore each type, so I'll have to dump a bit more cash than I originally planned to catch up. Since I already have a LTS, I guess this puts me in the large aquatic mammalian class...

OP, I generally tell many who starts these type Threads - DON'T. It will never end well for you or just in general. A few will sympathize and/offer constructive advice. Most will belittle you and make fun of you. They will then fight amongst themselves.

I can assure you the Daemosh is one of the best science ships ever made and I don't forsee it becoming outdated any time soon.
If you're not in the mood to throw your wallet at the screen I may have some spare EC lying around to help you close the gap. It's the least I can do for the great service you've given our community over the years.

It makes sense, really. You're considering using you lobi to buy it. Takes an awful lot of c-store stuff to get that much lobi.

It's always refreshing to hear the stories from folks who beat the odds.
