Guys, come on. Enough of the armchair development TRIBBLE. I work in manufacturing. With equipment that is 50 years old. Guess what happens? It breaks. Or something goes wrong and it has to be worked on. We might lose a few hours or a day. Granted, its not as complex as computer systems but the same logic applies. Sometimes, things take longer because of unforseen issues. You might fix one thing but something else might have gotten missed. Or preventive maintenance is being done to ensure it shouldn't happen again. Give these guys a break. Suck it up. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it can be helped. The people that work on STO/ARC work hard on it. Cut the holier than thou bulls**t and think you know better. And trust me, they don't owe you a damned thing.
Trendy, thank you for the updates. Tell your team to do what they need. It's ready when it's ready.
7 hours maintenance is a TRIBBLE shame. Most webhosters only need 2 hours max to optimize their COMPLETE network and prepare it beforehand already. So I wonder what you actually do there? Sipping coffee and making one letter/click per minute for your changes? Maybe you should stop developing new games already and concentrate on getting the others running!
The game really changed since it was still P2P and most of it only negative... and it gets more and more negative with such TRIBBLE like this.
Look at it this way; maybe if we suffer enough downtime now, God/Time/Fate/Whatever/Q/Etc. will see fit to be merciful and when 11.5 does come out in five days, there won't be days upon days of horrendous downtime for 'unscheduled maintenance' keeping us from "Temporal Front", Romulan Admiralty and breaking our brains trying to respec all our characters after the skill revamp...
Yeah, and while we're dreaming impossible dreams, I'd like to win the Publishers Clearinghouse... *Smirks.*
"If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it's not for the timid." -- Q, TNG: "Q-Who?"
^Words that every player should keep in mind, especially whenever there's a problem with the game...
I don't think I've ever seen STO have nearly 10 hours of downtime due to maintenance. Couple that with the fact there will be more on Tuesday due to the release of 11.5 (and then likely more patches shortly after), and that is a lot of downtime by anyones standards.

You know, I think it would be hilarious if we had a episode with Q in it to mess with our characters. I mean, how epic would that be?
Good thing no event was running today, just imagine how many 'please add x days because y discussions' there would be if an event - like Crystalline, Mirror Incursion or Breach - were running...
An extension on a maintenance already this long is outrageous.
I have to agree, that's 9pm over here in the UK 10pm in most of Europe that's alot of people who've missed out today.
Indeed correct myself today can therefore forget to play because I have the night shift. This maintenance is clearly planted and focused only on America while apparently other continents or other timelines are completely forgotten. This method of working can happen that some people sometimes miss certain things and that agreements can not be performed with other captains and fleets. Sincerely thank for that.
Please don't get me wrong, I'm convinced of the fact that any decent network and its software needs a decent time to maintain it, and if you're working on everything that's in the PWE portfolio, I also understand quite well that it'll take several hours.
The only thing that I find regrettable, is that it always SEEMS (I say what my impression is, the facts could be otherwise) that European players are the victim of longer / prolonged downtime...
Also, I don't have the intention to incite a Euro - America debate on merrit. Like I said, just stating my feelings (and a lot of other Euro players me thinks)

Actually, no.
Is it unfortunate that the window is long compared to the ~2 hour maintenance of most Thursdays? Yes. Is it absolutely necessary when you're literally updating tons and tons of platform and Arc-wide elemnts? Yes.
I hope a functioning Dev tracker is part of this then.

Besides the Winter Event/Q's Winter Wonderland?
We used to, it was called 'State of Q' and was removed during the Borg/Undine mission revamp - Q/Q Jr. sent the player back in time to Wolf 359 to ensure that time-traveling Borg didn't assimilate Sisko (Who never actually appeared in the mission) and prevent him from becoming 'The Sisko, The Emissary'.

Jeez enough of the 'it's not fair on us' babble. The time is chosen as it's traditionally the quietest time of the day for the game. Cryptic aren't out to alienate us in the EU (I'm from the UK), so just deal with it for Christ's sake. I can cope with this, why can't you!?
When a big update is incoming, it's very common for extended maintenance to happen. I've been playing around 5 years, and it's the same everytime.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
So glad the network maintenance is being done. A lot of games never do maintenance this heavy, and just let problems persist.
Sure, it means I'm out from STO for almost all of the day. But honestly, I more appreciate the fact the maintenance is being done. I'm totally ok with it taking as long as it needs.
When I saw 7.5 hour maintenance, I was thinking it was 11.5 being dropped today. Surprised by the length of the maintenance and what is being actually done.
Think of it as being the time they might need if something is not working, instead of saying the maintenance will last 2.5 hours but they will add time after time.
But, again, we might still get it past the 7.5 hours too.
I think they learned (from Scotty) that 7.5hrs of maintenance that ends 'early' causes less uproar than 2.5hrs of maintenance that requires extension(s). One makes you a miracle worker, the other makes you a incompetent boob.
omg no O.o incompetent TRIBBLE? O.o
We all know, Scotty use a multiple of 4 but here, mmmm..... i do not think so. Anyway it could be worse, we could do something else entirely and forgot about Sto.
"We will be performing shard maintenance on April 7 from 5AM-2:00 PM Pacific (12:00-21:00 UTC). Please check the forums."
Oh my gosh! The maintance is changed from 8:30pm to 10:00pm EU time

kazumi, judging by the 2nd part of your name, you're either dutch or flemish? it's zomertijd now that's UTC+2, so it's still 11pm
Everyone realizes that they gave us about 3 weeks pre-notice of today's lengthened downtime, and explicitly said it might take longer depending on how the network tests go, right? This isn't a shock, unless you specifically weren't paying attention.

its mostly Arc maintenance. So STO will still be broken :P

I hadn't realised I could patch while the maintenance was ongoing. That is a result at least.
To all you complainers out there. I work in the IT industry and all systems need down time for patching and the like. It is just unfortunate that STO being a 24/7 game, and down time will effect the users. It cannot be helped.
What is quite annoying is that this maintenance is so long, given that 11.5 is out soon. I will bet my shirt that 11.5 is going to be a massive download.
It may have been opportune for Cryptic to do the preview of 11.5 today.

Good grief!
Well, I work in 2hrs so... No STO for me today!
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Same here, won't get to play STO today...
Server still shows red here. I was expecting that since Trendy mentioned the added time.
Back to my laundry.

You should really have extra hamsters and hungry cats in cases like this.
A test server is supposed to be used to properly test patches before patching anything....
