All I got to say is it took 5 months of game play time to get where I wanted. Not sure how its going to effect me with the change, May take longer the 2nd time around. Right now I like the old system better I think after I got to the point I understood it. Not so sure just yet about the new system
If the UI doesn't show an increase in shield regen at all, based off shield power (also not when hovering over your shield in space?), then we're either looking at a huge bug, or they killed off that mechanism altogether.
Thing is, I first thought maybe it could work all out, after all; but if I again need to allocate 6-9 experience points (or whatever they call em now) on those 'new' skills, there's we're looking major nerf again.
I think that was covered in writing somewhere, damned if I can remember exactly where right now though, probably the initial announcement of 'we're doing this, suck it up'. Basically, other than weapon power, the effect of subsystem power levels on the game is being nerfed in favour of higher skill-based interactions.
This is another of those simplifications that I like/dislike. Is it simpler, yes. Does it quite effectively remove another aspect of the game and reduce its depth? Yes.
Might as well just remove subsystem power levels. Oh, no, wait, pwepew's get mad when you consider that sort of thing.
I think it's not the simplification that I dislike, overall. It's the fact that this simplification was presented as a means to add transparency to how things work and make it easier for people to make choices based on that information. Instead, it's being used to obfuscate another series of nerfs and further hide or break mechanics which would've been far easier to spend some time doing a little maths and sorting properly before releasing the information on how that process actually functions.
What everyone buying Zen are really saying while all these bugs are still floating freely:
Last comment i'm going to make on the skill tree revamp, so still time to make me eat crow, but anyone who believes this statement from the skill tree revamp blog is fooling themselves and doesn't know Cryptic's track record when reworking the majority of powers/skills they have touched over time
Players Lose Nothing – As much as possible, everything available in the current system will be made available under the new system, and investments in equipment and ships retain full value.
They have requested our help in testing the changes and making suggestions on them. They haven't touched the base skills at all in most cases they just changed the skill point bonus and intend to compensate for this in most cases. Now go be useful on Tribble and save the bitching until AFTER it goes live.

I already know you and I are generally on opposing sides to this, and I know we're both active on other threads on very similar topics (specifically Sci Nerf), so it confuses me to see you say that, especially given that the whole of Sci is possibly facing a massive Nerf, how perception/stealth works has changed, whole skill sets were removed, etc, etc, etc.
So yeah, an entire career path of skills, more than half what what used to be wrapped up in tac and eng, not to mention all new mechanics and skill choices for armor/shield penetration to replace the 'base' options offered previously and built in skill CD reductions on the skill list in addition to ability options constitutes not touching base skills.

After importing my main back onto tribble. I've got to say that looking at the numbers with one exception that I'm querying on holodeck as I type this. From my choices based on ground I should be out performing my holodeck build with regards to damage output. Both primary weapon choices namely Tr-116B and Zefram shotgun and all my kit modules with the exception of deadly intent (and that one's understandable) are showing a marked increase in damage output.
