Do you want a Skill Revamp?

alexraptorralexraptorr Member Posts: 1,192 Arc User
Not talking about new skill system but rather the fundamental concept.
Do you want a Skill Revamp period? Or are you happy enough with things the way they are?

Just curious to see where people stand.

When this goes live I will no longer be able to take STO seriously as a game of strategy and choice and will only continue for the scenery, story and special events.

This looks like (at least an attempt at) a balancing pass, which was sorely needed. Too many eggs in the "Tactical Captain using BFAW" basket.

Yes, people have wanted this for years and a handful of forum complaints will not and should not change their minds.

I would vote for this too if it were an option.

In addition to that, I'd want them to refund every respec ever done in the past on every toon.

It should also allow for more customization, not less, and only after a balance pass on the game.

Last time I voted for "hope & change" things only got worse for me. I would prefer no change at all as things are confusing enough on STO.

Why? There is NOTHING broken with it and complex? NOT really. They should dedicate the time to fix other stuff like create NEW content, another full or semi faction or even give some love to PvP? This would be like the 3rd time they touch the same stuff and IMO useless waste of time from what I see so far. I know some peeps might say well these are developers and NOT bug hunters...still they should devote the resources to something else. If ain't broken why fix it?

Other; yes, but this current proposal comes across as overly simplifying and lacking in flexibility, and also doesn't solve the underlying problem that many of the games mechanics and other interactive components utterly lack in either consistency or transparency (often both). It's all well and good that they want to simplify/demystify the skill system so people can 'get it', but that's a pointless goal for a system revamp when the same could have easily been accomplished by accurately telling people how things worked in an easily accessible manner which wasn't done previously. It also doesn't help that certain mechanics have been gimped beyond all belief (crit, drain and stealth, I'm looking at you) without any obvious documentation in game to allow players, whether new or not, to easily understand the direct effects without going off to check reddit or some other source where someone has likely spent hours testing.

The current skill system actually looks and feels dated. I don't know how much of that is having grown used to it and how much of it comes from it looking much like a lot of older systems I've seen/used. It clearly needs something done to it but I'm really unsure about combining skills in the way outlined by that post. I mean, with the current system you could say that Grav and Particle gens are a 'grouped' skill, but you at least have the flexibility in only taking one and whether you want the necessary defense by taking Inertial Damps in the next Tier up after having spent points getting there.

Still, things to be glad about. Ground and Space point separation and perhaps a move away from lvl and rank being weirdly combined when they're clearly not directly related currently, to either being combined or separated properly.

Next up, could someone please sort the mess that is the ship tier system and perhaps finally undo the childs-bedroom-styled-state that is Lower T5 (lvl40), Upper T5 (lvl50) and T5U (50-60)? Possible hint: Lower T5 = T5, Upper T5 = T6, T5U = T7 (assuming we don't actually get a T5U should be T6 without a mastery trait thing), T6 = T8 because more HP and boff abilities...

Skill revamp wasn't really needed imo. But we don't know yet what we'll be getting so... it might turn out to be better than what we have.

But there are two things that, based on the information we have so far, I'm not going to like: I'm not a fan of combining skills, especially science ones. And the loss of an option to specialise more in ground combat is disappointing too.

Sure go ahead waste your time and energy complaining about nothing *eyeroll*

Why is it that every time someone has a complaint on here you show up and basically tell them to **** off and accept it? IRL do you just roll over and accept it any time a company you do business with does something you don't like? If your cell phone bill was twice the rate it was supposed to be for no reason, and they refused to change it, would you just accept that? I know its a completely different situation, but the point is when you don't like something it is your every right to voice your opinion even if it won't change anything.

I dont needa Revamp that is suposed to balance PVP battles. First and foremost i dont do that kind of childish TRIBBLE. (Its not Star Trek, that is counterstrike) 2nd Almost no one does PVP. Keep your fingers away from my carefully build skill tree for f***sake!

Oh dear... another person who thinks that balance only serves the interests of PvP'ers.

How many times does it need to be explained: if no one PvP's, as people tend to say here, then their influence would only be marginal. If they do have a lot of influence, then they're more important than you make them out to be.

The discussion on the importance of PvP is irrelevant anyway. Viability of different builds and balance are as much a concern of PvE'ers as they are for PvP'ers.

The skill revamp is needed the current system is ok, but it both has balance issues as well as it's not clear on the effects of said abilities. Though I am concerned a little with combination of both defensive and offensive abilities, seems too much for a single passive bonus to have.

Not sure Cryptic cares about opinions from this thread...whether you are for or against the change. However, one thing is for sure is that they "do" have the time to invest in fixing stuff that is NOT broken and it is not to focus on PvP since PvP has been dead for a while.

Well it's not like it's optional is it? That said my opinion is that it is long over due. If what they have planned will work well? We'll have to wait and see, won't we?

Not all change is good, and not everyone will agree on the terms for what is "good".

What I do NOT want is to see my characters' capabilities nerfed in the name of making it easier for new players to learn, or to chisel out another way of monetizing every mouse click.

Old system is too complicated for consoles and tablets. I expect a STO port soon. Current system is just fine for PC's, and players who do their homework.

"Worlds of TrekCraft?" Uh, WoW discarded the talent tree system our skills will be getting long ago in favor of a much better model.

Exactly, but every other MMO out there is still heel bent on copying the Vanilla WoW skill system. I've played several MMOs, back in the day SWG had a VERY intricate skill system, but they switched to the vanilla wow model with the NGE, SWTOR launched with this type of system, and LotRO switched to it a couple years ago as well.

I would have much preferred a new and original system.
