Thank you for the how to. Used PlayOnMac and Steam, other than taking me half the day it seems to have worked. I just keep getting stuck at the loading screen. Let it sit for +15 minutes a few times. Haven't actually made it to the character selection screen yet.
Well the Windows version is performing about as well as I expected. It gets stuck right at the STO loading screen (just after the Cryptic loading screen) then just sits there like a stoner who's too high to reach for the cupcake on the table. Craptastic.
If you read any of the news you would know it was due to a DDOS attack on Neverwinter that started on Firday. Never winter for some reason shares the same server as STO. Windows had nothing to do with it.
Where exactly is your Arc Account Balance? Since the C-Store is offline, where would I find this Zen balance since I'm waiting for the refunds. This'll determine if I'm going to even attempt to keep playing (by doing bootcamp) or just giving up on this if they don't keep their word.

Oh look. The classic "why I switched to Mac" story.
Oh look. The classic "why I I want a Mac cause I'm Jealous"story. Funny part, my cousin at his IT contracting company fixes Windows using a Mac. Head to your nearest Apple store, I'm sure they will hook you right on up with a new Mac.
My "Classic" comment was at least descriptive and accurate. Yours is just plain silly and based on nothing. Perhaps it was an attempt at being funny but it falls flat.
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.
Fussed with WINE for a while last week and couldn't get STO to install and work.
Downloaded PlayonMac.
Loaded Steam through PlayOn Mac and installed the Windows version of STO through Steam.
STO fired right up but took 3 hours to download and install all the patches.
Logged in and it sat at the New Dawn screen for 20+ minutes. (Can't say I was terribly surprised. Spent years working with Windows machines and initial startup of any Windows app always took a while.)
Only other thing I did was back off the graphics a tad.
Now it loads like it should and the game is working fine.

This happened to me with wine and Playonmac. Pleased to see STO is working for you as well. Playonmac is worth using. I recommend others who are looking for a way to play STO on their mac to use playonmac and do the same way we have done to install STO from playonmac then steam then STO. on my macbook the playonmac solution did it. although only on really low graphics.
on my iMac 5k (biggest one available) it doesn't work. crashes every time i want to log the character in. tried different screen solutions and everything - no way :-(
don't want to put bootcamp on my iMac, so if anybody had same problem and solved it somehow - please let me know!

You might want to try it via CrossOver? Not sure if there would be any difference, but it just might work.

Just been thinking about this Mac situation and all the alt ways we can at present use to play the game via unsupported 3rd party software.
Does anyone like me feel slightly embarrassed for Cryptic that these 3rd parties, some offer the software for free and have not created these softwares dedicated to run STO but can and in most cases actually run this game better than the dedicated MAC Client being closed ?
If someone can develop a free piece of software to run the game using Wine, why can't Cryptic ?

So i got a response from support regarding my question about if i opt out of a LTS refund do i forfeit a zen refund, heres the answer

Because i have to use unsupported 3rd party software which at some point may become incompatible with a update to that software or discontinued itself by the property holder, and because i have to use unsupported 3rd party software to run your game after the MAC closure and opting out of a Life Time Sub refund, which i still do not want. By opting out of the LTS does this also mean any Zen i purchased from October is also not going to be refunded to my ARC balance ?. As i have purchased a substantial amount

Silly question here as i can guess the answer. But as i've mentioned i have found an alt way of being able to login into the game depend completely upon the upkeep and compatibility of unsupported 3rd party software i.e PlayOnMac and have opted out of a Life time Sub refund which i wasn't entitled to anyway due to purchasing long before October last year. Does this mean by opting out of a LTS refund this always includes a Zen refund ? from any Zen purchases from the October 2015.
Thank you
I have sent a mail back asking what the criteria was to get a refund as the images below show i am using a MAC and as you can see from the C-Store i was awarded 7 Multidimensional transponders for when the MAC client was offline due to season 11 bug. I believe this was a MAC only thing.

I'd reconsider the Boot Camp option, if at all possible.
Yes, you'd have to buy Windows... and, yes, it would like take a half-day to get everything up and running... but, it's done for me now, and STO runs like a dream. Seriously. It will show you just how pitiful the emulation option really is. (Note, though, that I am running on high-Medium settings... more by choice, but I had one hard CTD when I had it on max settings. Better to be safe than sorry, and it's still much higher graphics than what I ran on the Mac client.)
I know that "job computers"/work restrictions may prevent you from partitioning and doing Boot Camp... but, if you own your Mac, and you have about 70-100 GB to spare... go for it.

This would be a good idea. Cryptic should offer a way to play with Mac using something like this.

Well, the original Mac app was under a WINE/Cider wrapper. The issue is how everything simply stagnated with the Mac client and no "under the hood" changes were made to prevent all the crashes that later Mac OS versions gave the game. That's what wound up killing STO for Mac.

I just got this same answer word for word from support; I am truly considering speaking with a lawyer about a class action.... not about them stopping the support for Mac but rather the fact they are not honoring their statements but likely realized after the fact how much it was going to cost them and are trying to back out of it. If they have to defend the statements they made in court it will easily cost them more than just simply doing the refunds in a honest manner. This is ridiculous that they are trying this.....

I've asked support some questions
1. What the criteria is ?.
2. Did using Wine during the Client issue we had back in October class me as multi-platform and void my claim ? A platform in your own statement you are promoting despite offering no support for it.
3. Has logging in recently since this announcement to PlayOnMac voided it as i'm seen to be able to continue playing ?.
4. How exactly are MAC users to access the ARC ACC Bal when you do not have any MAC games ? (Crediting Zen to ARC balance totally voids any argument in my view to them stating anything about being multi-platform as you would need to be able to run windows apps to use this ARC balance)
Waiting for a reply to these questions. Doubt i'll get answers
I expected them to find excuses not to honour this statement. THE PROMISE OF IT WAS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE. No T&C's included, No Criteria to meet, simply implies all MAC users will have all ZEN Purchases refunded to ARC Balance.
Hi Captains,
We wanted to come back to follow up on where we currently are with the Mac version of Star Trek Online. As some of you are aware, we had issues in the recent past that affected our players from launching the client and playing Star Trek Online. We were able to work with our partners to bring the game back up and deliver all the previously available promotions that were unattainable by those players.
Following these issues, we looked at our Mac support overall and determined that we cannot promise to deliver an experience on Mac that meets our expectations of quality. After heavy consideration, we have decided to end support for the Mac version of Star Trek Online on February 5th. No other version of Star Trek Online is impacted.
Here are some important notes as we shut down Mac support:
The Mac client will be unavailable for download starting on February 5th.
Anyone with an existing Mac client will be able to play, but the game will become permanently unavailable via our mac client by Spring of this year.
We will be shutting off C-Store for all Mac users to prevent players from continuing to make purchases before it permanently shuts down.
We will be processing reimbursements and refunds over the next few weeks.
We will be canceling and refunding any active recurring subscriptions purchased between October 1, 2015 and today, including Lifetime Subscriptions. If a payment was made other than a credit card or Paypal, the value of the subscription will be reimbursed to your Arc Account Balance. WE WILL BE REIMBURSING ANY ZEN THAT WAS PURCHASED THROUGH ARC OR STEAM BETWEEN OCTOBER 1, 2015 AND TODAY TO YOUR ARC ACCOUNT BALANCE. We will be reimbursing the value of any Packs purchased through Arc or Steam between October 1, 2015 and today to your Arc Account Balance.
For those looking ton continue to play our game after we shut down the Mac client, we would recommend using any of the popular programs to simulate a windows environment on your Mac, including the free software Wine.
We appreciate all the Mac Captains who have flown through the galaxy with us since 2014.

I also asked support what was the criteria used to determine Mac users? and then contacted live support to see if I could get any answers but was shuffled back to Web Support.
I expected them to find excuses not to honour this statement. THE PROMISE OF IT WAS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE. No T&C's included, No Criteria to meet, simply implies all MAC users will have all ZEN Purchases refunded to ARC Balance.
I was holding out hope that we were not going to have to fight for what they said they would simply do... I even provided support tickets starting 09/19/2015 when us Mac users could not connect to the patch server, then on 10/27/2015 and also for the missed giveaways they gave to us mac users on 11/09/2015 again on 11/16/2015 for the Mac Promo pack.
I think I have easily provided enough data that I was a Mac user for the specified time frame
This is extremely frustrating; I think the bean counters at Cryptic realized that this was going to be expensive and they are looking for any reason not to honor the statements they made, if they can determine if it was a Windows or Mac client with that much accuracy then they should be able to calculate how much time a person was on each client and how Zen was purchased (for me it was all purchased based on the web site not the ARC client) and then refund that Zen and credit each user on a prorated amount for their monthly subscription.
I too complained way back in October about not being able to log-on with my MAC (I've got the support complaint on file); still no reimbursements? so it;s on record- and to date, I've gotten bubkiss. They did not stipulate "criteria" and should be required to follow on through on their promise of restitution.

I've spoken to a lawyer about a class-action lawsuit and based on the EULA and Terms of Service, Mac users have a case. On a moral basis Mac users weren't given enough time to get their affairs in order, also, NOT refunding Zen balance to cash is apparently also a big "no no" due to the fact that we were only given 24 hours notice, the minimum should be 15 days to make sure Mac users have the opportunity not to spend their money on a game that is closing its Mac doors. Basically what Cyrptic/Arc/PWE did was "steal" our money by being dishonest. It also doesn't matter that you can play the game on Windows, being able to use 3rd party softwares to do Cryptics job also doesn't matter. The game was ported to Mac, and they failed to support it because it "costs too much money", yet they have no issue keeping the money Mac users spent under false pretenses. And frankly, for them to come out and tell us "Yeah, we are too lazy to do it, so you go do it and give us money" again, immoral business practices.
Seriously, to all the Mac users, why are you giving this company money when they clearly don't care about supporting you as a customer? All your doing is telling them its ok, but its not. What happens the next patch they release that breaks Wine or CrossOver? You can't call customer service, you can't submit a ticket, you'll literally just be sitting on your hands until SOMEONE fixes the issue. But how will they know theres issues? They won't because support has been cut. Im sorry, i just can't fathom a reason to give money to a company who clearly states "If you have a mac, we will not support you, thanks for your money though". The forums admins like throwing out the line “Change is the essential process of all existence.” Well you took a step backwards, how is THIS better for everyone? I don't think thats what Spok had in mind.
It truly sucks it has to come to this, all they had to do was give me my $130 back, instead it was transferred back into Zen... What am I supposed to do with that?
Honestly, the thing that hits me the most is the constant complaining about how expensive it was to keep Mac users going, yet they keep all the money we spent on that game just DAYS before they closed it down with only 24 hours notice and completely refuse to take a loss. So the question remains, what are you doing with my money if your not supporting me as a Mac user?
Have a nice day everyone!
PS Don't bring up BootCamp or any other alternative, thats a cop out and everyone knows it, I refuse to bow down to Cryptic give them my log in counts, and money. And to be totally honest, no Mac user should use an alternative method, What did you buy a Mac for if your forced to use a sub-par OS, and waste 40 gb of hard drive space JUST to play a failing game? Just look up the active player count, doesn't even hit 10k, on average theres about 2,200~ players. The numbers speak for themselves.
PPS By all means, ban this account, i know your going to anyway, this is my final post.
Wonder when a further statement to un-state the 1st statement at the start of this thread where by the statement is wrong and should never have gone live is released so they can flake on the statement.
Now this is a contentious issue but i'll right my option anyway.
Whether we can access the game using Windows Bootcamp or 3rd party softwares the purchases we have made whilst using MAC's were not to subscribe to the game as it is free 2 play they were purchases for goods to be used within the game i.e the C-Store. By withdrawing MAC support those purchases are no longer available to use by supported channels i.e the PWE/Cryptic MAC Client, so by dropping direct support those purchases should indeed be refundable as we have no support on our platform to use them. In my option Bootcamp and 3rd party softwares do not fall under this purchase agreement as they are either unsupported software or unattainable due to the cost of having to purchase a Windows license i.e Bootcamp. Having to pay and install another OS to use services you have purchased already on an existing platform is not an alternative option.
So a few of you who have had Zen refunds or in real terms account credits, which you cannot use as you have no Windows access, why are Cryptic keeping your money for services you purchased that THEY decided to drop support for because in their own words it was to difficult to maintain
Sorry Trendy to be so critical here but i think the way this was communicated by the announcement on the front page was misleading as it does give the illusion that all Mac users will have Zen refunded.
Maybe CS need to give better reasons to why some have not been refunded rather than a generic msg staying you are not eligible
I enjoy the game immensely and am currently trying different ways to continue to play, which include Play on Mac and wine.... I am even considering a BootCamp partition. So my continuing to play and use the Zen Credits back in game is not the issue.
My issue is that I can not play on my prefered platform as a result of Cryptic dropping Mac support, I saw the refund as a "peace offering" for lack of better words to entice us to attempt other ways to play. However if we all are fighting this hard to prove we were Mac users it appears that they may have underestimated the amount of Mac players they had and it is hitting their bottom line so they are now trying to back out of the statements they made at the beginning of this thread.
My argument is plain and simple do what you said you would do at the beginning of this thread, give the refunds etc that were offered as a "peace offering" since we can no longer play on our preferred platform thats all I am asking, since we are being dropped the ones that want to continue to play will figure out how to do so.
I will admit I logged in from ARC at times when they had giveaways but I had to travel 5 miles to a friends computer just to get the give away... my total ARC log in time may be 10 minutes on the outside, not nearly enough time to get where I am in game.
Yeah, this is unacceptable. I was verified as a Mac user after the New Dawn launch, and received the resulting "make-up" giveaway. Now suddenly I don't qualify?
Based on what I'm reading elsewhere, it sounds like they're trying to use the fact that users ever logged in with a Windows client — e.g., using a Wineskin wrapper while the Mac client was broken during New Dawn launch, or after the closure announcement to explore options to continue playing — to decide that those users aren't Mac users.

I know that "job computers"/work restrictions may prevent you from partitioning and doing Boot Camp... but, if you own your Mac, and you have about 70-100 GB to spare... go for it.
This would be a good idea. Cryptic should offer a way to play with Mac using something like this.
USS Casinghead NCC 92047 launched 2350
Fleet Admiral Stowe - Dominion War Vet.
Well, the original Mac app was under a WINE/Cider wrapper. The issue is how everything simply stagnated with the Mac client and no "under the hood" changes were made to prevent all the crashes that later Mac OS versions gave the game. That's what wound up killing STO for Mac.
btw, here's the HOW TO for keeping STO running on your Mac: http://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/discussion/comment/12853842

Perfect World Entertainment

I am in agreement with you
I was holding out hope that we were not going to have to fight for what they said they would simply do...
> I also asked support what was the criteria used to determine Mac users? and then contacted live support to see if I could get any answers but was shuffled back to Web Support.

Again, Have a nice day everyone!
Again, totally unacceptable.
