I think for me it's both. While i do not mind a powerful ship, some of them are downright horrible to look at. When the Galaxy class was king, I stayed away from it because I never really liked the shape and design from it (It was one of the things that I didn't like about TNG). Defiant class is a powerful ship but to me was god awful looking as well (although I did use the Defiant class in game just because the damn thing was amazing in PvP).
I ended up with the Vesta class and never looked back. As a Tac captain I had some concerns about it being primarily for science but I needn't have worried, the science skills only made my ship that much more versatile. I was so convinced that this was the ship for me I bought the 3 pack and upgraded to T5-U. If the T6 Vesta came out, I would get it in a hot minute.
I still want to get the Presido class or pack and try that out for the same reasons as the Vesta.
"There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life." - Ten Bears (Will Sampson)
I'd say both. I love love love my Annorax, she is a pure exotic damage BEAST. But sometimes I'm in a more 'immersion' mood. For those times I've been enjoying the new Jupiter, I like the design, like I liked the Odyssey. Plus sometimes I like to run around my ship to goof off, and I can do that on the Jupiter because I can chose my interior. The Annorax has a closet for a bridge. Now if they will only let me use the Odyssey bridge on the Jupiter...
for me its if its a canon design (currently all my toons use the promotional release t5 ambassador) altho if i need to get a ship trait i will use others........ <Inappropriate content is irrelevant - edited out>
I find that I have a HUGE preference for Faction ships.
Aesthetics and performance are all important, but I look for the ship that has the mesh of all of these qualities. For example, my main Fed flies the Presidio (kitbashed) as his main ship. I have other ships that perform better but are either not as aesthetically pleasing, or aren't faction specific. For example, I can pull higher DPS in my Eclipse, but the Eclipse is flat out ugly. I use the Eclipse as the flagship for my alt, but my Main won't touch it because it's too ugly.
The Jupiter on the other hand checks all the boxes for Aesthetics and is clearly Fed looking, but falls too far short on Performance.
The Presidio is the middle ground, and is my Main 'Go To' Ship.
I am surprised to admit that my most used ship is the Excelsior... I prefer Cannon ships.
If I could use the Constitution class up to T6. or the Ambassador class I would.
I have been pushing for late 23rd century interiors with the blue/green computer consoles from the first six movies.
I think having updated interiors and revamping the Cannon ships to bring them up to T6 level would be a great addition to the fiftieth anniversary of star trek.
It has always been looks for me. Sure the function is important too but why fly around in something you think is ugly? Bortasqu' with cannons? Hell yeah!
Performance, esthetics & has to fit a char’s background. Example for 3 of my toons:
1) Suliban (Alien) Sci -> Recluse: best debuff ship, fits for scis, suliban & tholians both active in temporal cold war so a seized enemy ship makes sense.
2) Fed Klingon Engineer -> Arbiter: Offensive cruiser with a very military like appearance for a fed ship, can equip a cloak. Toon fits on it like worf did on the defiant.
3) Bajoran Tac -> JHSS: Ideal escort for a DS9 themed toon with a rebel attitude against FAW mainstream. Wont leave it till tier 7 bug ship is released.
Finding the right ship to rule them all is one of the hardest tasks in game. Fortunately we have growing selection. It’s also weird experience because taste fluctuates. I found the eclipse for example to be the most ugliest ship ever seen in game until I looked for something efficient my liberated borg would fly. Now am very happy with it. In fact closest thing to plain perfection I could think of (for as long borg ships remain unplayable in game).
Also, cool thread OP.
Great stuff! I can envision my character meeting up with your characters in a Star Trek universe. I use my Captain's Log to craft my own story. Keeps things interesting for me.
I feel the same way. I love it when peeps get into it as you do with your favorite K'tinga or your passionate Klingon approach to the game I noticed in other threads as well the past year. That’s the best way to ensure fun for yourself as well as your teammates because fun and good attitude spreads easily.
Sure we can rock some stuff in game together if you like. I have 2 KDF faction characters. If you don’t mind an attack wing of elite Tholian mesh weavers at the side of your imperial warships we could hit PvE hard.
If you more into PvP I can give it a try as well but will probably become an easy target to you beam overloads. But it won’t stop me to die a honorable death in battle.

Style & theme. And then it also has to be fun to fly the ship for me. That's why I basically switch only between two ships, even after 2 years of STO.
I did get the T6 Interpid, purely because Voyager-theme, but it wasn't as much fun to fly it; but still wanted to support the game a bit, so got it, as a Voyager fan. But generally 'new shiny' approach doesn't work for me. So if I don't like the design or the theme is unappealing, not gonna fly it or buy it.

I personally prefer canon ship's, but they also should preform well. I try to walk a line between performance and aesthetics, but cryptic doesn't make that easy. In many cases canon ship's are an inferior breed.
My federation character mainly uses the T6 excelsior. In the enterprise-b/Lakota skin.
My Klingon until recently was alternating between a T5U K'tinga and T5U B'rel. She's now using a T6 Mogh...at least until the T6 K'tinga gets released. ;-)
Most of my characters have a fighting ship and a mission ship. The mission shops are chose for headcanon reasons and are generally strong enough to push through everything but elite PvE. They're also more interesting.
Fed: Tactical Oddesy with Reman set and romulan plasmas. Reason: Starfleets ambassador to New Romulus. KDF: Zombie ship with antiproton build. Reason: Stolen from the cold dead hands of the Zombies to assist Eldex wipe out all the Zombies. Reman: Chel Grett with Dominion set and weapons. Reason: Dominion war veteran who captured a Breen ship that had been retrofitted by the Dominion.
Delta Fed: Quantum and blue phaser themed Tac Oddy. Reason: A mirror version of my mains first officer and an Andorian. Delta KDF: Bio-molecular, nanite, and plasma hybrid disruptors on either a Chel Grett or a Negh'Tev depending on the day. Reason: The Chel Grett was captured defending the Emperor and the bio-disruptors are a symbol of the three power alliance her father was killed by the Iconian for. The Negh'Tev is just awsome. Delta Romulan: I haven't picked out a ship yet. Still need to level her.
It's the fact I am strong in them an have easy cheap builds and they're interesting to me that keeps me in them.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

I tend to gravitate towards canon "hero ships". So my main (Science) toon flies an Intrepid, my Engineer flies a Galaxy and my Tactical (in the making) will either fly a Defiant or a Sovereign.
As for builds, my Sci is geared more towards DPS. My Engineer is a canon tank build. My Tac, I don't know yet, maybe she'll also fly a canon setup but that's way down the road.
I don't look much into a ship's performance. If it's a hero ship, I'll want it. Once I have it, then I'll worry about trying to milk as much performance out of it within the build constraints I'm setting for it (canon vs non-canon).
Once in a while, I fly other ships either for traits or to create some variation in my gaming but I always return to my Intrepid and Galaxy.
Have any ships surprised you performance wise ?
Has any ship design grown on you over time ? Or any that you're getting sick of seeing ?
The Arbiter surprised me with its flexibility, and its looks if combined with the Avenger saucer. It's my latest purchase and I'm very happy with it. Before that, I'd have said the Patrol Escort, which is hands down my favorite Cryptic design. The ship I'm tired of seeing is the Scimitar. I dislike the design and find it odd that the Republic would mass-produce a ship with thalaron weapons.
Do you jump around a lot from ship to ship, or stick to one, or a small handful of ships ?
On my main characters, I tend to stick to the same ship and only take small detours into others. Each of my main characters has 1 or 2 dedicated "secondary" ships whose builds I've spent time on.
Are you a ship chaser, and like flying the new shiny's ?
No. I only get ships that I think I'll like using for a sufficient amount of time. Having said that, ships are high on my list of "things to get if I have surplus resources". The only ships I actively chase are those only available for a limited time, like the Summer and Winter event ones.
Finally, over the course of your STO experience, what ship have you flown for the longest period of time ?
Likely the aforementioned Blockade Runner Retrofit, on my tac. Before that he flew a Fleet Patrol Escort, so a very similar style. I prefer my escorts to be a bit tankier, and the Steamrunner is my favorite ship design. It fit like a glove.
Ohh, A Little bit of both.
I fell for the Steamrunner, the moment I saw it, Hardly flown anything else after that.
Being an fed-eng, it packs quite a punch and is very sturdy.
Then the Intel Phantom appeared, and comparing them stat-wise, they were pretty much the same, but the Phantom is just a newer, more modern ship. Hence I got me the Fleet Intel Phantom, and have not looked back.
-I am not so fond of its looks, though. but it has grown on me, especially after I got the Iconian ship-set mounted.
It got a lot more funk to it with its iconian mirror-finish pattern, and a dash of red paint.
I am not making the greatest Deeps, but its got potential. -I just have to Work on handling it. -Pressing the right buttons at the right time and such
Parsing in SCM, I am much to my liking, getting crits up to 62K with purple Mk12 stuff.
My average could/will be better when I get around to get upgraded gear. -Now its somewhere between 3.5K to 4.8K'ish
-So its not terribad at all.
When I don't fade out during battle, I manage to avoid exploding, -but I need to stay alert, or it pops.
If I could get a Steamrunner-skin for this ship, it would be a Winner.
I have flown my Tac Scimi since it's release and never looked back, it's pretty much all to do with aesthetics for me but the fact the ship performs insanely well is a good bonus. My play style is all about hit and run with massive spike damage form cannons and using the cloak effectively plus an insane turn rate flying at full throttle its a great fun ship to fly in as it's size with massive inertia means lots of drifting past enemy ships whilst unleashing all weapons
I have used other ships though typically only to get a certain trait or console or now and then just messing around in a junker with all torps in a battlezone for giggles.
I spend plenty of time in the ship tailor but I'll fly nearly anything.
Stats and useful traits matter most to me, for the last two years I've had money to throw at the game so I've flown a lot of different ships both lockbox and otherwise. Before that I used the free and mirror ships along with my original defiant I got as a subscriber and a multi-vector escort. I can't stand slow ships so that's about it.
More recently I've been enjoying an assortment of battlecruisers and science ships. Nothing short of an "I win" button could drag me out of my Scryer... except maybe a T6 Vesta so I could do more with my torps. Lol
When style, performance and 'other' all find their way into a single ship, it's hard NOT to fly it. Kamarag is also the most balanced ship in the game too.
For me it's what fits my character. My main fed tac is in the Presidio. Just fits him, my main KDF sci is in the Sci pilot raptor and my rom main, he's in the Faeht intel warbird.

I usually stay in one ship when I'm doing the FEs. As it goes with part of my RPing. However I do swap out if I want to head out for Fun or to Rep Tier. I did make good on swapping when I was leveling in the Delta Arc to get to Lv60. Lately I rather just keep 1 ship and keep going. As my crew is more set up for that ship. Where the others I have to reset their abilities.

I have to say 1st and foremost, style and design and Cannon ship. My ship has to appeal to me in aesthetics, 2nd i have to get a performance out of that ship. One of the reasons why i don't often use the Intrepid {Cryptics artists did an amazing job on the ship skin) i just cannot get or feel i'm getting the performance i want out of the ship. I.e enough pew pew. Although was parsed between 22-28k using it.

I swap and change ships far to often on all my toons, the best part of STO is the choice of ships and builds and I am always playing with set up and ships. I do have a High DPS ship for each toon for fast runs when trying to maximise Earnings for playtime during event weekends which are based on the ship that performs best for the toon and its build.
Honestly though, how a ship feels when flying is what makes it the chosen favourite, which is why I absolutely love battling in my FT5-U Atrox and Kar'Fi Carriers the most!

I know, it's use by all three factions. They sort of went out of their way to give appropriate beam up request animations (though Klingon combadges are on the arm not the wrist, that's Romulans), it's be nice if they could code the appropriate salutes in. The Roman style one actually exists in the game, some NPCs use it.
