How come the Narada is now pictured as a super strong, heavily armed dreadnought when Nero himself says in the movie: "In my time, where I come from, this is a simple mining vessel".

Because it's a simple mining vessel covered in Borg c.rap

So neither Nero nor anyone of his crew warned Romulus of the impending doom but instead they strolled through the galaxy for a few decades collecting some Borg technology on the way to upgrade their ship? Who wrote this ridiculous story?

I'd vote for the Defiant. Starfleet's technology tends to advance rather quickly both through their own research and technologies they adopt from other races they meet or join them. Just look at the advances Admiral Janeway brought back in Endgame. That's just technology a few years in the future.

The Defiant should have a massive advantage in speed, maneuverability, armor, shields and firepower.

We also have to consider the crew's knowledge. They may already be familiar with the technologies incorporated into the Vengeance and how to exploit its weaknesses.

They did keep the Excelsior class going for, what...100-years? The Defiant was a terrific design and all it needed was to be refit. When the Intel ships were released, everyone wanted a Defiant skin for the flat one, because they just saw it as a rip-off...I'd just like our ships to be upgradable.

Imagine if there was a project we could do, to put our FAVOURITE ships in for refit...you could be provided with a temporary one ;-) And at the end, you could have upgraded your ship to T6, with another console slot, the use of Intel abilities, whatever.

No, after the supernova they went to the Vault and got their ship upgraded for a revenge mission against the Federation and Vulcan, then all the stuff with Spock happened.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Yeah, the Narada was destroyed more because Nero was a lunatic, than anything else.

Your father was captain of a starship for twelve minutes. He saved 800 lives, including your mother's, and yours.

I dare you to do better.

It'd be nice if any of that actually stayed in the film instead of landing on the cutting room floor, or worse yet just being in the comic book prequel.

I know, sadly even the filmed portions (adapted as the 'Nero' comic) will never end up in a extended edition/Directors cut type thing.

Still, it takes me about 15 mins to read both 'Countdown' and 'Nero' prior to watching 09, so I'm not too bothered.

Technological advances even in the Series ship interiors show what a mere twenty years can bring about - TOS vs. TNG. Compare Enterprise's Enterprise with the TOS Enterprise; you would think that the hundred year older NX was a more advanced ship. And this for a 'trivial' matter such as FX, etc. in the space of just twenty five years in the present..

Just think about computers and chip miniaturization in this same period; M-5 no longer looks like a pipe dream by then.

'But to be logical is not to be right', and 'nothing' on God's earth could ever 'make it' right!'

Not really. I was saying that Nero's insanity was indirectly the cause of the black hole.

Just going by what we know of quantum mechanics, I have to give it to the Defiant, with quantum torpedoes. Of course, they don't exactly fit real science, but still.
My mother always told me to walk away from a fight, The Marines taught me how.

Still think that Defiant would've smoked Nero too.Weapon;s officer blindfolded, Troi in command. :D

You're forgetting the bit where Nero disables the Enterprise-E with a single shot.

It wasn't a single shot, he hit her several times and she still managed to survive despite the fact she was hit while her shields were down. Compare that to the Alt-1701 which had her shields up when hit and they dropped to 30% and failed to prevent a hull breach with a single torpedo hit. Another Torpedo probably would have finished her off and Sulu even says they couldn't take another hit like that.

The Alt-1701 is after the Narada attack on the 1701-E by several years(relative to Narada, Nero, et al.), so it's likely that the Narada incorporated adaptations specifically for ships with their shields up between then and that encounter.

Actually the Narada engaged the Kelvin minutes after her battle with the Enterprise-E and her weapons were still slicing the ship to pieces even with her shields up. The alt-1701 was decades more advanced than the Kelvin and her shields were just as ineffective as the Kelvin's. Plus Nero and company were in prison for that time, so it's not like they had spent the time modifying the Narada's weapons. She tore those ships to pieces because she's naturally 100+ years more advanced.

Considering that Worf's KDF task force was wiped out by the Narada, the Enterprise's survival was just a simple case of plot necessity.

The Narada was also firing on them while cloaked. Plus, a Sovereign Class should be able to take a lot more punishment than a Bird-of-Prey, even if they're from the same century.
