I played Star Wars: Empire at War. Seemed like if I tried to autoresolve a battle I would lose or take EXTREMELY HEAVY casulties, even with vastly superior numbers on my side. If I took command myself, even with inferior numbers tactics could win.

Give me 20 squadrons of TIE Defenders, and I could just about wipe the floor with anything. :D
Think I even did that with 25 squadrons of X-Wings before.

    Meh, cheater. :P

For clarification: As far as I remember, the only thing capable of reliably defending against those kinds of attacks are lots of corvettes or a bigger quantity of better fighters. Skiprays were particularly nasty because you could build those before the opponents even RESEARCHED B-Wings or TIE Defenders, and they had the same kind of firepower.

Actually, when I think about it, the Consortium was fairly OP in general - Crusaders seemed to have more lasers than CR90s and Tartans, and Skiprays could deal with anything except CR90s, Tartans and fighters without a hitch.

Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.p3OEBPD6HU3QI.jpg

RTS for me. MechCommander Gold and MechCommander II. Both had decent not overly complicated Editors. It was easy to pull a battle from the PnP version of BattleTech and turn it into a PC scenario. Lots of people made mods for MC2 as well. Some of them were waaay out there and had little or no connections to the BattleTech universe but most of them were quite good.

Still play CnC:Generals once in awhile. Also Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. I liked Starcraft but the discs went all wonky on my and I could no longer play any of it.

and mass drivers...let's not forget the shield-bypassing mass drivers

or the disruptors on their basic infantry unit that could allow a single squad to easily wipe out heavy vehicles or structures while taking hardly any casualties

i used to play a lot of total war rome, because i always knew how to mug the ai opponent with a highly inferior force with highly inferior numbers. once an enemy force attempted to take a town, i have 4 lines of militia hoplites and they had 2000 strong unit of various types from spearmen to swords, arrows chariots and other horses. i just sat there with 3 lines and watch tne get poked to death in a choke point, the 4th line then swings around and the ai realizes and the white flag goes up, instant bloodbath in the making xD.

once had an inferior carthaginian attack force of 2 armoured elephants and half strength sacred band cav against a full roman unit of 2200 men, slaughtered then by using the elephants before they rampaged, and then swift hit and run attacks with the sacred cav on charge runs. enemy never stood a chance.

My tactics in field battles on Rome 1 was to form my legion up in the traditional Roman acie triplex formation, one first cohort and 9 legionary cohorts in three lines and hide all cav in the woods overlooking the enemy flank, once the enemy attacked my "open and vulnerable" infantry, I order the cav to charge not at the nearest enemy unit in their line but the furthest unit in their line in effect rolling up the enemy army in a massive charge.

Wiped out entire armies with it., simple and very effective

done that as well, the problem is getting the timing right before the ai untangles itself. a favorite of mine is horse vs hoplites. ordinaily the horse would be dead and the hoplites would always be poking that one. but if you can turn the flank of the hoplite flank just enough, you can charge into the side of their line and quickly pull out, or you can double up with light horses running decoy while the heavy horse clatter into the back of their line, if nothing else its funny watching 60+ enemies in that line of units die like that.

at one point i had a small unit of a few acher warbands, warbands and one merc hoplite formations with heavy horses, the enemy had the nomadic huns invadion, 2 massive armies, 4000 strong, it was just a matter of funneling all those witless soldiers into the waiting pikes. youd think at this point, how hopeless the situation is. it looked like it and it almost was, but i ended up taking out 60% of their total army before too long, but my own forces were more of less spent, minus the heavy horse general unit. i used those horses in the final stroke. unfortunately lost that village when they attacked again with another massive force without replenishment.

uprising, 1 and 2. you play the mother tank that finds and creates bases on specific points, produce troops and tanks to attack with against other enemies. ancient games but they were fun.

My tactics work well against the barbarians, if i'm against phalanx type units I tend to bring more archers and javelin troops

RTS for me. I like the quicker action compared to TBS. Age of Empires and Command and Conquer are two that I've played.

Little tidbit about me for the foundry peeps, RTS is pretty much where I started dabbling into content creation. Started on AoE's map editor. Ever since I've pretty much tried any UGC features on games that had them.

        ...

I miss the map making features of C&C General's World Builder. I could really go to town there.

back in the day msn network when it was in operation was a fine thing to behold, especially custom maps, was fun doing the 21 step racing, tower defense and other things, similar to what starcraft did earlier, you had tower defense, sunken defense, defense f, dodge the larvae, outpost defense (comical imitation of starship troopers defending a doomed outpost from hoardes of rampaging bugs) and countless other attempts.
