an example of a RTS is Home World 1 and 2, also Command and Conquer
an example of TBS is Galactic Civilizations 3 and Endless Legend
Both types offer good game play, I just finished playing the remastered version of Home World, and the end game of the 2nd one was just wild. Talk about no think to think. lol
I enjoy both, but I guess I'd say I prefer turn based games.
Due to how dumb enemy AI tends to be, real time strategy games all tend to go the same way: put a big huddle of troops at point A to keep the endless stream of enemies away from your door, then start amassing a big group of your strongest units to zerg point B and win the game.
Having more time to think things over, and knowing that the enemy has to wait their turn while I do my thinking, tend to lead to more complex and interesting games in my experience.

I too have a preference for turn-based games. Recently, I've pulled out a couple of old games I liked - Liberation Day (Interactive Magic game, also known as Fallen Haven II) and Battle Isle 3.
Nothing beats a good turn-based 4X, though - Space Empires 5 has a few flaws, but it's nice overall (especially if you pick up a good batch of mods), and Star Ruler 2, while real-time, is pretty nice. I do wish it were turn-based...
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.

I'm a fan of both. Played lots of War Craft (All three games) and StarCraft growing up, but my first good Turn Based was Advance Wars.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

I absolutely loved the Battle Isle games.
In fact, I'm pretty sure my introduction to TBS games was a Battle Isle 93 demo out of a PC magazine. It was just one mission, but I played the heck out of it for months (don't think I ever actually beat it; it was a freakin' tough map).
RTS, Sending waves of imperial guardsmen to their deaths on dawn of war never gets old
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

RTS. Fortune favors the bold, the swift, the Zerg.
I am the rush.
the zerg leader with a bat'leth in one hand and running down your enemy watching then run in fear .
i have played many rts and tbs over the years, civ, caesar (all and annoying all of them), pharoah, populous, space empires (all), galciv (All), darkreign, c&c (All upto 4), star trek armada (both), simcity (All upto 4), simant, aoe (All including online), sc (All including LotV later on), eaw (Including expac), settlers (2-3 + GNU clone version), warzone 2100 (+GNU version) war-craft (Pre wow), ttd (+GNU version), railroad tycoon.. many others. i practically stopped playing them in any serious capacity about coming up a decade ago, the last one i had some sort of interest in was age of empires online before that got canned a few years back and casually i occasionalyl play starcraft and 2.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
I do enjoy the total war series, nice blend of turn based and real time

Should technology in my lifetime ever wed good voice recognition software with RTS controls, so an entire army is not based on the two klutzy hands of my modern Ulysses Grant but on voice directions like a real general might issue, I might be genuinely interested in real RTS. Otherwise, I might as well be playing Tetris, because sooner or later I'll fail not because of strategy but because of biomechanics.

Yeah, I wish there was a 4X like that. Real-time, multiplayer tactical combat (as opposed to the cinematic combat of Endless Space and Galactic Civilizations - those can be nice, too, but...) and in-depth, turn-based management of an entire interstellar empire...
One can dream, right? :P
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
I've played most major RTS franchises, Age of Empires, Command and Conquer, Starcraft, Rise of Nations, Supreme Commander, Dawn of War, etc. turn based just isn't for me, though I can be persuaded to play a mix, Rise of Nations and C&C 3 Kane's Wrath for example have world conquest modes with turn based mode on the world map, and the possibility to fight the actual battles in real time.
In Kane's Wrath it offers a nice alternative to standard C&C game play, you'll quickly start letting the ''battle AI'' handle the battles you know your forces will win because it'll spare you about 10 minutes of a boring real time battle, while being able to dive into real time when you know your forces are outnumbered, the battle AI can't make an outnumbered battle a victory, whereas a decent player even without a base often can.
several years ago, i would've said RTS above all else...but nowadays, i have new appreciation for being able to take as long as you want planning a move
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
Passion and Serenity are one.
I gain power by understanding both.
In the chaos of their battle, I bring order.
I am a shadow, darkness born from light.
The Force is united within me.
I do enjoy the total war series, nice blend of turn based and real time
i used to play a lot of total war rome, because i always knew how to mug the ai opponent with a highly inferior force with highly inferior numbers. once an enemy force attempted to take a town, i have 4 lines of militia hopiltes and they had 2000 strong unit of various types from spearmen to swords, arrows chariots and other horses. i just sat there with 3 lines and watch tne get poked to death in a choke point, the 4th line then swings around and the ai realizes and the white flag goes up, instant bloodbath in the making xD.
once had an inferior cathaginian attack force of 2 armoured elephants and half strength sacred band cav against a full roman unit of 2200 men, slaughtered then by using the elephants before they rampaged, and then swift hit and run attacks with the sacred cav on charge runs. enemy never stood a chance.

I played Star Wars: Empire at War. Seemed like if I tried to autoresolve a battle I would lose or take EXTREMELY HEAVY casulties, even with vastly superior numbers on my side. If I took command myself, even with inferior numbers tactics could win.
Give me 20 squadrons of TIE Defenders, and I could just about wipe the floor with anything.
Think I even did that with 25 squadrons of X-Wings before.

yeah, i never trust the auto resolve, not unless you had a really strong tactical advantage. give your enemy on eaw long enough. but attack as soon as you have the strength. tactical hits first to the support struts and the rest is history. cant really do head on brute force on eaw, unfortunately because of the hitpoints in space and the ground cature points on the ground.

And yea mirror... I never trust the autoresolve. I've had times where I had CLEAR tactical advantage... only to have the autoresolve say "Oops... you lose."

both types have their advantages. I still play BotF from time to time, TBS with crappy AI. And I still play armada with fleetops mod, RTS.
The game I am playing most besides STO is EU4. Actually thats a mix between TBS and RTS. Every day is a turn, but you dont stop every day if you have to play 400 years;)

It looks like Master of Orion's getting a remake, which should be cool.
