The way you feel is not how everybody else feels. A lack of understanding that can be as simple as having a lack of empathy or it can signify much deeper issues.
People who are happy about something don't tend to hit the forums saying "I am fine with this" - so just because so many people who dislike it are hitting the forums does not make them the majority.
Because they set their own precedent the first time they let it carry over to next year.
Changing that decision a short time before it is scheduled to take event again is a good way to draw ire.
I've mentioned it before, I'm sitting on 8-900 pearls that I can't do anything worthwhile with this year.
It's like they're telling me that I wasted my time grinding them.
MMOs are always changing how they do things, just because they chose to do something last year does not mean they have to do it again next year.
I've read the rants and comments for the first 20 pages of rants before deciding to toss my two cents worth into the bag:
The problem isn't that the ships are retiring or the currency is changing.
The problem is that it was a surprise announcement just shortly before the event.
Kudos for offering the ability to trade in existing pearls for something else.
Penalty points for removing the ability to slot at the beginning of the event instead of the end.
That large generation of new Delta recruits don't thank you for that!
HOWEVER, The best solution would have been to announce that this is the last summer that the pearls or old ships will be available. Grind this year or kiss them goodbye.
As for the Qmendation,s autographs and other hoardables, that this will occur with, I suggest the same thing. Announce the retirement of the old trinkets will occur after this one last chance to do something about it.
Its just that we players are asking for some respect. Our time is somewhat valuable and we chose to spend it in STO. Please don't make that a decision regrettable.
But they don't have to - they only have to login next year not this year!
Some would say planning ahead for one's future and taking steps now to make life more convenient for yourself later is a positive trait that should be encouraged.

Nah they're also telling you that you shouldn't "waste your time" this year ... ... that's the funny part ...
Patch Notes : Resolved an Issue, where people would accidently experience Fun.
Really, Cryptic? You incentive we to make new alts. We do. Now, perhapos some people would be planning on flying the old ships. But guess what? You are forbbiding us from using them!!! Way to go!!!
Also, health people have life outside this game. And this life might require that perhaps in a specific year, some people will not be able to complete the event. And these people will be locked out of using the ship forever!!! Not a nice move as well...
And lastly: The game already has too many currencies. Shoudn't we be moving in the direction: Let us unify the currencies? This is just overcomplicating things. Also, this game has seen too many currencies conversions. The Dev's should decide what they want and just settle at it. Otherwise, we players will just start thinking there is a complete lack of planning inside the development team. And who will want to throw money in a disorganized team???

Thanks Cryptic for introducing the Kelvin Timeline. It remembered why I decided to never more put any money on this game.

If the decision had been made back then, then they probably would have announced. Once the event was up and running the devs would have been working on their next job... it has nothing to with respecting the player base - they are working on the event now and the decisions was made now, players are now informed.
... adding a method to convert the Pearls to the new token a couple of weeks after the event starts will certainly help.
This is a good idea, just add a conversion mission to the Special Event Rep system. If Cryptic REALLY wanted to be fair, allow players to buy this years event ship with pearls and the understanding any excess pearls are worthless thereafter.
Why did you guys even make the event reputation tab? It's pointless now.
Since there is no point accumulation over the course of a year, the Event "reputation" tab has always been worthless, except as a place holder for the current event. If there was actually a "reputation" -style progression, we would get some number of points for each event completed, toward some attractive reward at the end of the year. But of course, Cryptic is too miserly for such a reward system, so place-holder it is...

Some would say planning ahead for one's future and taking steps now to make life more convenient for yourself later is a positive trait that should be encouraged.
True, but this is a game. What could have been working 6 months ago might not be now, so forward planning in software development cannot always be done by planning ahead and keeping with any decisions or plans that had previously been thought of!
From where I sit Cryptic hasn't "screwed" anyone out of anything.
What exactly is the problem?
I have to disagree here. And this is one of the things i haven't seen really addressed in this thread is the precedent Cryptic is setting here by retiring the Risan ships and a form of 'currency'. Ships that were effectively purchased or earned with money.
Time=money
Keys-Lobi-Pearls=money
Now that they have done this once, whats to stop them from doing it again. Not just with the other seasonal events, winter, anniversary, but with other in game currency. Many billionares in STO have tens of thousand of Lobi. Whats to say that the next lockbox retires Lobi and the Lobi store becomes the (insert new currency here) store. Nothing is stopping them from doing this except player outrage. (not that seems to stop them).
Also now that Risan ships are retired, what other ships are we going to lose? Any event ships that have lingered are certainly on the chopping block. But again whats stopping them there. Such and such c-store ships doesn't sell well, retired. No longer claimable even though you payed money for it. New T6 iconic ship. All old variants retired and only made available in a ship mega pack. The list could go on.
In the end, i earned the 'outdated' Risan ships for those current toons and all my future ones. And was lead to believe i was unlocking something for the life of my account. Now i see thats not true and worries me how 'unlocked' and 'available to all toons' some this content really is.
Regarding grind - I've not played too many MMOs, but those I have played have all been exactly the same - you do X to get Y!
People DID X, Risa event grind, to get Y, 'holiday ship tokens', then get told almost at the last min, nope, we're canceling the ship tokens, you have to do X all over again.
Add this to recent surprises such as "yeah know that do X for Y thing called patrol missions, well now it's do X for 1/2 Y, m'kay?", and Dyson Battle Zone "know that do X for Y liizard hunting thing, now you get less Y for the same X, assuming you get any Y at all", or "know that X for Y doff thing, now it's all X and no Y".
There seem to have been more "Less Y for more X" in the last 3 weeks than in the previous 4 months.
The Risa "Veteran Player Punative X for no Y" announcement is the icing on the cake.
Based of previous Risa Event ships, and speculation on the forums, it's probable that this years ship is one that is no damn use to any of my 4 alts, so should I spend time grinding X for it?
How many other players who might normally be expected to attend the event, won't bother, because theres no point for them. New players drawn in by Delta Recruit, who wont bother getting a ship thats not for them just for a console to make a set, that they can never complete?
Personally, my biggest gripe with this is the spec point sale, widening the gap even further, old alts buying spec points that I'll never see, because the ability to earn them in game has also been subjected to the slash & burn tactics.
Then having widened the gap further than ever, we're told the gap is closing?
Seriously, these moves over the last few weeks do seem like a deliberate policy designed to discourage new Delta Recruit players from staying around.
What exactly is the point of a 'welcome new player' event being followed by a "new players not welcome here' event?

Oh thank god, I was SUPER worried that I would have to spend the entire summer working to earn a living.
But I guess I can put my worries to rest and play the summer event for 8 hours a day instead.
Thanks Perfect World!
P.S. LOL wait a minute... It tottally splipped my mind that I'll actuall have a full 24 hours a day now to play STO since I won't have to work, derp :P
...I sure hope my mother's basement isn't being rented out to someone else for the summer.
MMOs are always changing how they do things, just because they chose to do something last year does not mean they have to do it again next year.
The same goes for players. Just because they did something in the past doesn't mean they will continue to do it.
Does this drive for "metrics" mean they are trying to make the game appear more popular so that they can get a better price for it? Is Cryptic/PWE planning to sell STO soon and move on to the next project like Cryptic did with City of Heroes?

Nice Troll attempt ... but with the current changes there is no point in playing more than 2min/day (oh the horror of playing Videogames for more than 2min) ... so again thank you Cryptic for letting me spend the time on important stuff instead ...

In a job or business time equals money. In a free to play game time is something you dedicate by your own choice and with no reward other than self-satisfaction. If you are not satisfied with the return you are under no obligation to continue.
So the fact that you see no tangible problem with what they are doing makes you obligated to continue on rambling??
trendy, you failed to make me laugh.
no new ships, and all these "reps" are boring, and "Funless"
Fun is dead, fun got killed, and they say what is Fun?, get back to Grind and give me more money!
that how i percieved.
since they also destroyed fun in Neverwinter, as one of thier player said in NWO forum, it is no longer as MMO or rpg, it becoming more "Refining Simulator" and same for STO is becoming Repuation Simulator and very grindfest.
remember those fun "exploring the Expanses" in randomized encounters, they are fun, it made the game feel more RPG, now it is gone and taken out, becoming funless, all we do is to repeat
same old missions to get 3-4 different sets.
that is poor tactic to pull on players, i dont care if they stockpile on pearls or other items "saving for next year", i dont give a damn if anyone get on first day, we all evently get ours.
i really hate to see some curreincies goes away after end of event, you guys are not thinking of other players who has limited time to play or to partipate the timed events, now they will "AVOID IT" since they knew they get screwed if they spend time trying to earn when the event ended.
due to "summer real life shedules", many were going to local and cross-states conventions, fund-raising cookouts, state/county fairs, camps, and other local festivals and wedding decorations.
it may also drive a final blow for some players to be forced to quit and may never will buy any new brands from Cryptic Studio, it is already ruined, and then PWE got greedy and now it ruined even more.
it made me think that these devs got tired of thier job? if not, then suit guys are playing number games and cant get enough and they want more?
my question is, "Where is RPG Fun?", are you business folks are moving the games to "handheld console phones", away from PC format?
just my opinion, games are meant for fun and entertianment, now these "rep" tactic is unappealing and more grindy and very time demanding in very little timeframe we have.
you folks are thinking without your heart and soul, and your pockets is doing more thinking, maybe that why they laid off these good folks with hearts and kept money grabbers to stay in jobs.
I do not see much of a problem with the Pearls going as it is a fairly good trade off and it won't effect any current progress that has been made on already slotted vessels because players will still get their ship after it is completed. However what does get me is why these ships won't be making a return this year, after all they did a T6 carrier for last year's Christmas event without any problems and I would like to know more about their decision, I'm wondering only out of curiousity.

That's not the issue.
If they had given proper time to this announcement, far less people would be complaining.
Tell us: "This is the last year we're doing pearls, use them now or waste your inventory holding them"
What's so demanding about this, that they have to deploy it merely weeks after making the announcement?
What does Cryptic lose for not waiting a year?
Personally, I won't be spending any time on Risa this year, unless they do something different.
I hope others agree with me and stay away.
