It's all good guys. I know some folks are excited for it, and some are trepidatious. It was just a moment of frustration after going through the forums this morning and seeing nothing but doom.
Players can voice their frustrations, and expect a dev to comment. You should be able to voice your frustrations, and expect players to comment in return. Hope seeing some positives in here has brightened your day a bit I'm pretty satisfied that this thread has ended up in fact being majority positives.
If you rolled a new alt before or after Delta Recruiting, you wouldn't be able to transfer your Fleet ships to those either. Unless you're buying something that's account wide, you're always in a position where your alts can't get what you bought for a different character.
You don't have to buy extra BOFF slots, DOFF slots, ship slots, loadouts, or anything else for the new character unless you really want to. Your old characters aren't going anywhere, and they'll be able to claim any account-wide bonuses that your Recruit earns. They're going to be Delta Recruits by proxy.
...
But that's an entirely different proposition than being "punished". The option didn't exist before and doesn't exist now. They took nothing away and they're offering free benefits that nobody's being forced to claim.
If it's really too much of a grind for people and they don't feel the rewards are worth it, then they can skip it. I certainly don't recommend spending hundreds of dollars on top of hundreds of dollars just so they have a character who has every possible perk or gimmick, especially for a character they feel obligated to play instead of one they're emotionally invested in.
Spot-on commentary, right there. Agreed.
Delta Recruiting seems to be all benefits, no downsides. And there's nothing to force you to spend money on your new toon.
Of course players are pissed; the resource investment needed in developing a new char is quite high, and while a few of the space rich don't scoff at it, most players do.
It's so high for a single character that they're losing players on that basis alone.
It should be no surprise that players are unenthusiastic about what either requires a high resource investment, or otherwise is just another alt that will receive slightly more play time due to some additional promotional events Cryptic will be running.
I can give Taco a break on it; game mechanics are not his responsibility.
But, in general, this is exactly the kind of disconnect players are frustrated with.

I am looking forward to this even even though it means restarting my partially leveled science alt... I think it will be an interesting and fun experience and am looking forward to it.
I'm doing something similar, I levelled a new alt to 26ish or so before the announcement, now I've dropped them, melted all the stuff i can from them and deleted them, I'll just remake them as a delta when it starts.
+ It's actually fun leveling a new alt 1-50 (though not 50-60). I recently leveled a new toon and it was perhaps some of the most fun I've had in the game for a while.
It's especially enjoyable taking what I've learned from years of STO gaming and applying it to lower level gameplay.
+ Lower tier gameplay is massively more enjoyable. I'm not talking difficulty here, I talking powers and setups. Cmdr level is perhaps the best, you have enough powers for variety, but not to much. It's also the level that has the best PvP.
+You get a bit nostalgic for some missions.
+ A toon... that gets rewarded dilithium for making kills. What's not to like about that?
Just have one of your toons be your account's crafter then. And maybe only get lvl15 in the schools you want the trait for.
I have 12 chars that have gotten to 15 in at least one R&D school, some have as many as 4. One not only has 4 schools at 15 or higher, but one school is up to 16.
If all you do is the 20hr R&D research project, then it's quick and easy to level R&D.
This new Delta toon ...Give him more xp per mission any amount I don't care
Give him more EC more dilithium I don't care
Give him in game equipment I don't care
Give him a level 50 ship I don't care
Give him bonus xp to make it to level 60 in spec points no problem
Give him bonuses to Rep systems and fleet marks no problem
Give him a gold Halo to hover above his head no problem Don't care
Effect the abilitys and performance of my current characters....Now I care..A lot now I am forced to level a new character to keep my main character up to date
Give him equipment that's has advantages over my current characters now I care
When this hits and progresses then we will know the intentions of cryptic but still this is the mechanic to be used to make our current character obsolete just like the T-u mechanic is making our ships Obsolete
Hey Taco if your feeling all hurt over this ................
Consider how we vets must feel about the points I have brought up , About the time and money we have invested in our main character or characters
Am I wrong ????????
Then post up and tell me I am wrong... How about it... Tell me I am not being forced to make this new delta recruit to keep my current characters current and up to date..Tell me the new recruit will not superseed my main toon in future abilitys given only to the new delta recruit
post up and tell everyone how wrong I am, Tell everyone how this new Delta toon will only be equal to out current toons and not superior A year from now like T-6 ships are superior to T5 ships
Pandora's Box opens with the Delta recruit Or will it be the Hell Raisers box or a combonation of both

Saphire.. Science ground......Ko'el Romulan space Tac
Leva........Tactical ground.....Koj Romulan space Eng

Really? You're reading way too much into this to think that this event will damage our existing toons. And I have to say again: no one is forcing you to do anything. It's an event, with bonuses. Participate or not, the choice is yours.
When this hits and progresses then we will know the intentions of cryptic but still this is the mechanic to be used to make our current character obsolete just like the T-u mechanic is making our ships Obsolete
If you think that your T5-U ships are somehow obsolete, then that's a reflection of your playstyle. T5 / T5-U are still some of the most powerful ships in the game - in the right hands. T6 is in no way an instant-win boat, and is not vastly superior to T5 / T5-U.
Consider how we vets must feel about the points I have brought up , About the time and money we have invested in our main character or characters
Am I wrong ????????
Absolutely nothing that you've invested in your current toons is being taken away. You are, unfortunately, wrong.
Also, this is an MMO, and is being updated consistently. At any time, you will be presented with new content and new activities, to increase the strength of your toons. While yes, you are being asked to make a new alt (for free, with a free character slot), this will have benefits for your existing toons. It's like anything else: play the new content or activity and get the benefits, or sit out and don't. It's entirely your choice, if you feel there's value in doing so.
But it isn't a reason to complain that your existing toons are being devalued. There will always be new traits, items, reputations, skills, etc. added to the game for your toons to earn.
TBQH, Taco, I think a lot of that worry would probably subside if we got the system on Tribble for a little while to give it a good, hard bludgeoning of tests. The details and numerics would go a long way to dispelling the doom. Usually, when a system is so under-wraps that NOTHING about it besides vague stuff and lore is posted... It turns out rather poorly - case in point, Crafting and Upgrading and the snafu that caused. We're cautious because of things like that. Give us the system and let us see it, and I'd almost be willing to bet money that the results would be overall positive.
Crafting was on tribble before it got released. Upgrade system first started on Delta Rising tribble testing but eventually was partially released for live server and people knew what the costs would be of both.
Delta Recruitment isn't going to be on tribble primarily due to the fact that tribble is home to the season 10 stuff right now, which will be coming out most likely the tuesday after the event ends. I think they also wish to keep a majority of the changes off anywhere but live until the 2nd, so that we can experience the story changes for ourselves.
Now, I have a certain amount of sympathy for people who got a lockbox ship and would like to transfer it to one of their alts. I've got no problem with a QoL wishlist that says, "Let me box up my ship and give it to my alt".
If a Delta alt gets dilithium just for shooting NPCs, and a pre-Delta alt doesn't, that is pretty significant difference. I sure don't need two Romulan Tactical captains, especially when Fleet ships and a bunch of other things are bound to a single character, I would be foolish to buy two sets of unlocks for the same character role. Yet the one that already has spent money does not get rewards. I have to make another to get those, and if I want to use him at the same end-game then I need to buy the same character unlocks. Sounds like they are trying to obsolete my existing alts.
I'm not saying I won't make an alt (depends on rewards) but it strikes me as punitive, which is why I am not enthusiastic about it whatsoever.
I also don't believe for a minute that this was targeted to new accounts.
For one look forward to making a Caitian scientist, and then shoving her into a cruiser instead of a science ship, muahaha CHAOS.
I've spent the past few days getting some academy doff packs for her since there's gunna be some fleet recruiting perks at lvl 30, and I got the pre endgame gear all set up, also did some bridge officer recruiting, hurray for purple boffs for every station! Even have some dilithium on standby for a transfer... because you never know.
I get account wide perks for making a toon that I was going to make anyways and then race to endgame. the only downside is THAT I HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER WEEK TO DO THIS!
Effect the abilitys and performance of my current characters....Now I care..A lot now I am forced to level a new character to keep my main character up to date
Give him equipment that's has advantages over my current characters now I care
And you'd be perfectly justified in feeling that way if there was one shred of evidence that (obsoleting characters) was the intent.
So far nothing so far has been said by the Devs that would confirm that suspicion. The confirmation that there are going to be account-wide benefits would tend to argue a different case.
I have characters I have played since I started playing STO back in the subscription days who are arguably better than other characters I haven't been playing as much and have stuff the others don't. This is normal.
I could flip that argument around (and some people are) that the Delta characters can't immediately have everything that my older characters have earned or that I have bought for those older characters and that's not fair. Which is rubbish.
I think what people are really afraid of, aside from some theoretical unrevealed earth-shaking OP thing that only a Delta Recruit gets, is that they might actually become attached to the new character and feel like they have to invest in it. As if that somehow diminishes your investments of time and money in your old characters.
Hey, getting attached to your new character is a GOOD thing. It means Cryptic did something right. The only way this is an issue is if:
a) You stop playing your old characters completely, so everything you spent on them goes for nothing. (Easy come, easy go)
b) Or, you break the bank trying to achieve some kind of mythical parity between your old characters and your new ones after you've spent thousands of hours and thousands of dollars on the old ones. It's not a race unless you want it to be.
Some people are going to rock hundreds of dollars into their new characters thinking that they will somehow be better. And then they're gonna get owned by a veteran in an old-school Scimitar with blue Mk XII gear who put it all together and knows how to use it. Nobody's going to roll a Recruit and shoot to the top of the non-existent leaderboard in 30 days.
I don't figure on getting to 60 in 30 days. But I'm already planning to put effort into being invested in my new character, or what's the point of playing one?

The post about delta recruitment yesterday was written so apologetically, like "Seriously, people, you won't lose anything. it's all upside and no downside."
If you don't like it don't do it. Not that complicated.
I for one will be creating a new character. Free character slot, so who cares if I actually grind the new toon all that much.

The delta recruit alt would only have have that innate trait for the 7 weeks that the event is active. once the event ends, the delta recruit will be no different than your built up captain.
Don't forget that there are rewards that are going to be unlocked for your entire account: The starship trait and whatever items that are supposed to be given out. While we don't what those items may be, the fact that they have done this much means that they don't wish to replace any of our characters with one.

I could be mistaken, but I got the impression that was only during the event.
Plus, I know you know that you can transfer refined dilithium from one character to another one. Don't you?
It's a boost that you can spend on any character you want. The only limitation is the refining cap, and that was going to be a limitation no matter which character was earning it.

Just to demonstrate how interested I am in this event: I deleted 2 alts (one Fed, one KDF-Rom) to recreate them, and see what this event will bring. They were poorly developed anyway.
As for the DOOOOM on the forums.... how often do people come here to post something positive? Most people content (which is most from what I see) stay ingame and play. Then there are many people who vent off frustration here, and the regular guys who are sometimes positive, sometimes negative (usually the post count that is above 100)

I was going to create a Klingon but I think I will make another Fed concept character based on Enterprise...Enterprise Uniform and NX class Starship all the way to 50

I wont imply intent however the mechanic is being put into place to do just that
I did read the Deltas will be marked for future rewards and I got a lot of open slots for new characters...had to spend zen on something right :P
So I will make new OP characters be min maxing them from the list now that I understand how OP some character classes are
Example a Fed Klingon one of many characters with huge advantages
( Better ships available ) ship traits available
( better ground traits ) honorable warrior for ground
I will make the characters but I wont level them just play wait and see perhaps one to level 50
Jellico....Engineer ground.....Da'val Romulan space Sci
Saphire.. Science ground......Ko'el Romulan space Tac
Leva........Tactical ground.....Koj Romulan space Eng
JJ-Verse will never be Canon or considered Lore...It will always be JJ-Verse
Well it is unpleasant to see Taco upset. I have seen his work in the forums for the past years and he is really dedicated. That being said - the sole reason for all the negativity is plain simple. In all these press releases after Delta Rising announcement we are often deceived and tricked. And here it is again, there is a week until the event and all we know is that the Delta recruits will be special, yet unknown how. There will be vendors, but what they will give is also shady. Aaaand that is it.
Certainly plan on doing it. Not overly excited, but at the same time interested to see what there is new and it's a good time for a new main (which I was working on, but don't mind starting again).
You're on. I don't believe it can be done. Prove me wrong

I was only kidding. I am no where near that talented or that much free time on my hands...plus I got my main to worry about

I didn't hear anything about future rewards for them...just that the Delta Recruits factor into storylines for 2016. Once Delta Recruits go away that's it for them but their may be other recruiting events like it "Red Squad" or something like that.

The ones that are not account bound are an incentive for existing players to roll an alt during the event.
And herein, of course, lies the rub! I have literally spent several thousands of euros already on upgrading stuff for my main. There's no way in hell, or any other place in the universe, I am going to do the same for another toon. In fact, I de facto had to abandon my existing alt as it is, because of the astronomical upgrade cost of everything. And *that* pain, man-friend, has not subsided yet either.
And while I generally like Tacofangs, I don't like the fact that he's making it personal. People are no more out to hurt his feelings, by not liking the notion of having to create yet another (fully geared) alt, than I am blaming Taco personally for having effectively killed my existing Rom alt.
You're on. I don't believe it can be done. Prove me wrong
Post a screenshot of your recruit when you finish rolling 'em and post another one when you hit 60.
10 days will be easy. I trained my Rom alt up, from lv 50 to lv 60, within 3 days or so. I'm sure I'll be able to manage a full toon in 10 days, easily.

Gah. This is like a relationship where one person *loves* to surprise people, and the other one *hates* surprises.
You aren't being deceived or tricked. You're simply being 'teased'. Yes, it is intended to generate interest in the 'new shiny'. Welcome to the world of business.

Yeah, I'm thinking about one for each faction. But trying to play all of them at the same time is hopeless on my schedule. I'll probably put a couple of them on hold for later.

30 days? I'll do in 10. *NuKirk Swagger*
Let us explore it... together. Each man hides a secret pain. It must be exposed and reckoned with. It must be dragged from the darkness and forced into the light. Share your pain. Share your pain with me... and gain strength from the sharing.

I know right?!?!
You're on. I don't believe it can be done. Prove me wrong
Post a screenshot of your recruit when you finish rolling 'em and post another one when you hit 60.

JJ-Verse will never be Canon or considered Lore...It will always be JJ-Verse
I was only kidding. I am no where near that talented or that much free time on my hands...plus I got my main to worry about

10 days will be easy. I trained my Rom alt up, from lv 50 to lv 60, within 3 days or so. I'm sure I'll be able to manage a full toon in 10 days, easily.
Spec trees included? No. The rest, yes.
