They should have just made it with continuous waves of Snorgs coming at the players till either a certain number were killed or got though the castle arch.
Then give out the rewards accordingly.
I would imagine that a free-for-all-instance, would just about appeal to a very large majority of the players.
I might actually enjoy ToI if it were set up this way. With it being only at a certain time every hour, I just don't feel like interrupting what I'm doing to head back "home" to hop into the WW to run the event. It's just not that fun for me. The fact that the rewards are nearly nonexistent only makes matters worse. Notice for me, fun comes before rewards and since neither condition is being met, I avoid it.
Not "Tide of Ice" only. The whole winter event seems dead now (in my instance and at my play time).
I can't say with 100% certainty what the difference is between last years event and this year, but I have to agree, Q's WW is just dead most times I've gone in there. Not sure if it's lack of interest or if the Devs did some work to make sure the WW zone isn't as crowded, but this year it just seems less lively.
The race for the ship seems the only part of the winter event wich is not affected.
Actually, the autograph race seems to be just as dead to me as everything else.
Last year, there were people lined up to start the race every day I ran it last year. Always had the problem of folks crowding in and multiple players clicking at the same time and only one person getting to race while the others got DQ'd and had to head back, abort the mish and restart. After a while folks actually started respecting the line and waited their turns, mostly.
This year, I rarely see anyone racing and only once or twice have I seen someone starting the race while I've been running up to start mine. Obviously people ARE racing, but it's not as packed as it has been in previous years.
Hello. My name is iamynaught and I am an altaholic.
that's because most of us refuse to play just for the sake of playing. The sole reason I logged in was to finally at long last get one of those laser weapons just in case I decided to return in the future when they actually fix this game and it's large number of problems.
the real rewards are the wave completion rewards. which can add up to 18 or more trinkets.
I disagree; ATM I'm most interested in the accolade, which appears to be out of reach for all but the original completing character (the others are only 1 or 2 runs away from completing the accolade). I have all the toys/garments/bling that I want for this year already, so the "trinkets" are now going purely into building my GPL stock, as little difference that makes...:o

As with most things in DR, the Time to Reward ratio is out of whack.
I've done this a few times since the patch and got a pitiful amount of ornaments. Less than if I do the recipe quest or the invasion. Those are far quicker to do than ToI. So, yeah, of course they are dead.
I mean, really?
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! So happy I'm not the only one thinking this.
I like this event a lot, but since after 2 patches, it's still not giving accolades and rewards, it's soured me to it. Just played it all the way through and got nothing in the end.
^^^ and this
Tried couple of times to get the 10th on my alt for accolade, but no luck, it's broken, not giving reward.
Well, since 10 playthroughs are no longer needed ATM (and the amount of winter event currency items is LOW) - you're seeing what really happens when Cryptic adds half-assed content that not many really find 'fun' - they just play it because it's a requirement to access/purchase an item many players want.
FALSE !
The requirement is still in effect for 2 of my 3 my toons, last weeks patch changed nothing as far as I can tell (except adding lag).
To make matters worse, the snowball fight with snowmen is now broken, the snowman queen is disappearing early (sometimes 2 minutes early) and has robbed me a few times the trinkets I earned soloing the event on an unpopulated instance. Those clowns at cryptic have sucked all the joy out of this event and made even the pie eating contest a rigged event (I've had pies disappear right next to me just as I was about to finish eating my current one).
The whole wonderland is RIGGED to ensure player failure.
Playing today vs 2 days ago, there weren't enough players to even hold back the tide through level 5.
The Crybabies got their Account-wide unlock, and now no one is playing Tides.
The problem, I believe, is that the rewards were still bugged. After you complete your 10 runs of Tides and have acces to the Cryro warp/singularity core, why bother doing it any further when you can do the pie eating and the ground invasion more often and for more rewards?
As for 'crybabies' it sounds to me like either A: you haven't finished your 10 runs yet and therefore can not get the core you desire or B: you haven't clued on that the rewards system is broken for the Tides event. Either way, the only one coming off as CB is you, friend.
I'm a little confused as to how Tides works in the first place. I was in one last night where only myself and a fleetmate participated. The result was 638 destroyed, 2 escaped. I was in one this morning that had 10-12 players, and the result was 388 destroyed, 0 escaped. I've also been in one that was well populated with players (15+), and the result was 640ish destroyed and over 300 escaped.
I've seen instances where only 2 lanes spawn Snorg (I LOVE that name, btw) until wave 5 or so, then all of a sudden all the Snorg that should have spawned in the earlier waves spawn all at once. Sometimes they spawn outside of the lanes up on the hills, where they don't even have to destroy the ice walls or towers.
The craziest one I've seen so far wound up with a 1033 destroyed, 0 escaped result, from 6 participants, and apparently everyone got their wave and completion awards because no one complained.

Don't know what to tell you, as I've purchased the 4th Breen Starship item from the Holiday vendor on my main (and was unable to prior to the recent patch as I'd only done ToI twice.) Of course I also didn't experience the other bug many have with acquiring past WE ships on my alts for only 40 O-Pics either.

I think the total number of Snorg depends on the total number of players in the area. Obviously they don't want 1,000 Snorg to appear when there are only a handful of players to fight them off.
Lastly, you must kill the Queen at the end before the timer runs out to get credit for the run towards your total 10 - I THINK - with the bugs it's difficult to ascertain for certain. You may only have to make it through waves 1-9...

I'm quite fascinated by this sentiment.
During the first week, I played Tides maybe forty times. After the first few times and figuring out how it worked and not leaving before the countdown ran out, I ended up consistently getting rewards on every wave, and the large reward at the end. At the minimum I walked out with 10-15 commodities from the waves and 5 more or so for the event completion. On all four characters. That is consistently superior to both the Winter Invasion queue and what I think it should be really compared to, the snowball fight zone wide event which may give me 5-8 commodities. With the Doff missions, getting the commodities is actual smooth and enjoyable, unlike Risa's favors.
I had gotten Line in the Snow on one character and was halfway there on my other three.
After "The Fix" or rather the Break, yes I can buy everything now, but the wave ten reward hits only 20% of the time and out of maybe fifteen runs I've only seen the the actual mission complete reward once. And people in zone chat have stated that by their estimation only one person per run is actually getting the completion.
I'm pretty sad that the rewards are now completely scrambled as I find the event itself a lot of fun. It's engaging, it's fun, and the rewards were excellent for the time invested. Nor did I have a problem running it ten times per character, but ten times on an account is also a good idea. I'm hoping they're actually going to try and fix it so we can get the rewards and the accolade normally so it will be worth people's time to play again.
Aside from the occasional epicness when a dedicated team of four or five are up against the Snorg hordes bearing down on the fortress all well armed and fighting them like Mifune and the APUs against the Squiddies in the Battle of the Dock in Matrix Revolutions.

Thats kind of my point perhaps I came in after the fix but when running ToI Id get rewards for waves 1-3, then nothing until about wave 7. By the end Id have a handful of rewards at best whereas I knew I could get more from the pie eating and the ground event however, now looking back, it seems the rewards for those events have been nerfed as well. Intentional or not I am not certain.
The random, every-hour-or-so events (ToI and Snowball Fight) should, in my opinion, give more rewards than the other events that are on a 5-15 min cooldown. So far, however, that has not necessarily been my experience.
Had a run of it last night; the one on the hour. The one from the :45 had just completed. I got there after that one was over. There seemed to be only five people there and if I remember they had 300 some-odd kills but about 170 let-throughs.
I started off alone but was soon joined by another and near the end another character showed up with a snow-blower. I got rewards from about 8 of 10 levels and we killed the Queen in less than 20 seconds. No completion reward but we had almost 400 kills and only 5 that got through. Was fun nonetheless. Felt like the Three Spartans.
