Congradulations, "Tide of Ice" is near Dead now

Playing today vs 2 days ago, there weren't enough players to even hold back the tide through level 5.

The Crybabies got their Account-wide unlock, and now no one is playing Tides.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if an event is actually fun for the majority of people, wouldn't they do it even without needing to?

I think it's less about "crybabies" and more about "creating fun and engaging content".

My guess is "hope" keeps people not playing but posting on the forums. For others, its a path of sad realization and closure. Grieving takes time. The worst "haters" here love the game, or did at some point.

Feels like the rewards definitely got nerfed. I walked in with no Winter items and walked out with a couple of targ earmuffs. That's all. I was there from the beginning to the very end.

That might be why no one is playing it now. Hardly worth the effort.

It's a problem. I don't know if it gets better later in the event, when everbody has his stuff. I doubt it. But, I had the same problem before the patch. If there aren't enough players in the area 30 seconds before the event starts, I change map instance.

    Wow. Simply Wow.

The Breen set tries to do too much to be worthwhile and I sunk what dil I was willing to waste on upgrading weapons on my plasma torp boat so even the transphasic bonus is lackluster with what it would cost to switch over to them.

This is, in my estimation, a lot closer to the mark.

From a time to payout ratio, the gingerbread village has always been far superior and more frantic fun than the SNORG.

Even with a per wave bonus it was perpetual competition just to get a hit on some targets and the per wave bonuses because of that often felt marginal.

If changing the gating conditions illustrates that the rate of engagement on this activity was artificially high out of necessity and not out of comparative value and enjoyment?

That's good that this is now causing it to come to light so it can be addressed to be equally rewarding and engaging.

I think Cryptic made the right call here.

Also, as the event is still by some reports not actually awarding the accolade OR the credit for waves/success in some cases, many may just be giving it a miss assuming it's still broken (whether correctly or not). Hard to account for that variable.

Could be the fact that the damn thing is still broke like the majority of the rest of the game. The latest patch didn't fix it. I've done 20+ of these from start to finish and the majority of them never gave TRIBBLE for credit towards the 10.

Well, since 10 playthroughs are no longer needed ATM (and the amount of winter event currency items is LOW) - you're seeing what really happens when Cryptic adds half-assed content that not many really find 'fun' - they just play it because it's a requirement to access/purchase an item many players want.

They should have just made it with continuous waves of Snorgs coming at the players till either a certain number were killed or got though the castle arch.

Then give out the rewards accordingly.

I would imagine that a free-for-all-instance, would just about appeal to a very large majority of the players.

I was doing it for the "Line in the Snow" Accolade and that is not fixed, yet.

    I'll get back to it....

But....working on getting the X-mas cards addressed and to the post office...
and other such real life holiday things.

It's a big push for time right, now. ;)

if zone chat is any indication, I suspect the main reason might be more because not only did the recent patch NOT fix the "getting credit at the end" issue but somehow made it worse (and I suspect the only reason Cryptic remove the requirement is that they may have given up on fixing it), currently winter invasion is the more reliable way to get ornaments

speaking for myself though, as fun as Tides is I actually have all the ornaments I need for all my toons already, (did Tides 10 times on 3 of my toons each) I barely bother with the Doffing anymore....holiday stuff/vanity items were never my thing and I only wanted 4 warp cores and a few modules

I never see the problem before with TOI although there must have been one judging by the amount of players that did.
since the "fix" however it has definitely got worse, I played a game this evening and only got rewarded for 3 of the 10 waves and certainly not for killing the queen, and judging from the in game chat I was not the only one.

what is worse is they have removed the accolade credit for playing that will leave a lot of players with yet another uncompletable accolade to clog up their system.

its just not worth playing TOI any more as things stands, although it was fun before without the reward its pointless, you are much better off spending your time playing gingerbread colony, its actually more fun and you get a full reward every time you play it.

and another thing we are still seeing or I should say not seeing the underground snowmen that is another fix that wasn't.

cause I didn't need any of the rewards as I already have all the gear I want but I still want to see I got the reward and I can always save or trade them, and I already have the accolade but its still would be still fun to play if it worked properly.

I kinda like the current format when it works, you can come in half way through and just get rewarded for the waves you do or if something comes up and you have to quit the game you don't feel like you have lost so much.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

    Who is the crybaby, now?

No one is playing tides because the game is broken and doesn't award completion properly so you can't get the accolade at all. It went from not working 10% of the time to not working 90%+ of the time.

Yep, it's this. No point in trying to play a broken event. People will come back when it's working again.

What? It's not crediting to the accolade?! Oh man and I just needed 3 more, I knew I should have finished them when I didn't have the time cause you know of real life. Now that I'll actually have time to play next week still won't get accolade. Hate seeing those incomplete when it could have been done.

As others have pointed out, Tides of Ice has been broken from the beginning. It was broken even more after Thursday's patch that was suppose to make it so it's easier to get credit for participating in it. After yesterday's patch I played the event several times, always there before the event started, and some waves I didn't get anything for. And as the known issues in the patch notes states, the accolade is broken. I'm stuck at 1/10 for Line in the Snow accolade and I got that on the first day of the event and it was the only time I did it before the patch to fix it. So I wouldn't say the rewards were nerfed. Just that they attempted to fix the event again and broke it even more. :(

But on the bright side: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?p=21230201#post21230201
All 2014 Winter Event items no longer require completion of “Tide of Ice” to purchase.
I guess the event was so broke they decided to just unlock all the items in the winter event reputation store because they may not be able to fix it in time LoL.

I do like Tides of Ice but only 1 time yesterday the borg snow queen was as tough as the snowman overlord that spawns on the lake for the other event. All other times the queen went down in seconds and even when I was able to get in a few shots I didn't get any reward for it. In a past winter event the overlord had the same issue and they made him tougher so players had a chance to get to him and do enough damage to earn credit for defeating him. Hopefully they can fix Tides of Ice before they go on vacation for a couple weeks or so. Because when they go on vacation for this holiday we get *no* bug fixes at all. The only thing they would do is an emergency maintenance if the servers go down.

    I agree with this guy

sure, 10 times each char wasn't the best system but seriously, it wasn't that bad

it's an irrational expectation that you automatically deserve this shiny bit on all 45 of your characters

and for the people that complain saying "well if it was good people would do it" that's bs, it was fine and we had fun and it could have been patched to more fun, it's a once a year thing, they aren't going to create alterac valley for just 25 or so days a year

it would have been better if it was 10 on the first char, 6 on the next, then 3 on the remaining

that would have been a better compromise

Both you and the OP are actually right in this :D

Winter Event is kind of dead now, and only about 1 week after it came online compared to last year's where it was constantly busy.
