Why Doesn't Anyone in PUGs do Heals?

daqheghdaqhegh Member Posts: 1,490 Arc User
Just something I noticed after I rebuilt my Akira...It's an ultra tank destroyer now. And I have a way of getting too into my agro. Anyway, why is it I'm always on my own when I'm PUGging? Shouldn't teammates notice when others need a heal? I just assumed that was the main use for SCIs and such. My mian is a TAC, so my healing capacities are limited.

I am a healthy user of RMC+HE and Tactical team, not only on myself, but on others as well, and the Shield bubble from the 8472 rep was a "must-have" for me, to keep my teams alive.

Of cause, I am only an escort, so my usefulness in missions is limited, futher strengthened by the fact that I've stopped doing queued missions since DR.

But yes... you are of cause generally right... The DPS race excludes healing builds.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

It's annoying as hell when I get close and let loose my corrosive beam boat (and abilities). If I'm doing SO much damage I shouldn't be blowing up more often than the rest of my team. Barely alive is still alive, and it's rare that I don't blow up in advanced queues. I'm not fully blaming my teams for my over agroing here. I just think an occasional heal would be worthwhile.

Yea, but you yourself went for the DPS build... Why do you expect others to not do the same, when the missions are DESIGNED around killing things as fast as possible, rather than offering 3 or more alternate solutions that can be run at the same time, without running the risk of immediately failing.

STO has one purpose in queued mission: DPS DPS and more DPS.

when flying my scryer i'm always looking to heal anyone in range whenever I have one off CD, granted I don't make it a priority to stay in range of the whole team at all times (if your too far away your SOL)

cross healing really should be a regular thing tho, if you have a heal off CD and your shields are at 100% its a waste not to use it on someone near by. at the very least it saves them from using one which they can use on someone else

So it is caused by cryptic´s gameplay decisions.

To say with famous words: All you need is ...DMG!

Current gameplay favories damage, was so before DR and is still going on.

    Why there are no sci-healers?

Every BO-skill healing self or other means less dmg boosting skill.

DR forces everyone to the DMG-Train with "optional" PVE-Timers.

You have to kill as fast as possible or you fail.

Sorry to say but thats all about.

As long as Cryptic decides not to leave the "MOARDMG=MOARFUN" way there will be no change.

Dealing damage is also very important, I think.

I try to heal as much as I can. If someone has agro, in general, I would like them to keep it, so healing them is a good idea.

one of the easiest ways to heal in a pug is to get the repair platform in the current lockbox. It's really great in pugs.

But yes, pugs generally don't heal others. Most of them have blinders on or have crazy bad situational awareness.

More often it's better tactics. In the REAL army (which I served in) boots on the ground favored covering each other's backs. More men alive meant more firepower. It wasn't exclusive to superior weapons. We acted as a TEAM, not as individuals.

Yea... I am with daqhegh here.

Having 1000 guns against 10 people, isn't of much help if you are going head on into a minefield while being fired on.

Teamwork and tactics will win most of the times... Having superior weapons power only works well, if your enemy has little or no sense of how to do battle in the first place.

Still, STO is a game... Superior firepower is something that dosen't HAVE to be a requirement... Unless of cause the game is designed around that.

In this game as in other games you need to be near the healer and not wander off lol, but we are in luck I have come to the conclusion long ago that the best thing is the stuff that engineers put down and science officer does best with a pile of debuffs and one group heal and not much else.

One has to remember that these groups are thrown together helter skelter and unlike in other games where you get a group and you know form up and go in when your ready we jsut get tossed in and have no way of knowing due to lack of ability to you know communicate and do the q at the same time the actual skillset of the group. Heck half the time I am just busy looking at builds to see if someone has come in with a ship with like 10k hitpoints just to cause us trouble lol so by the time i have cursored through ships to ensure everyone is actually there to you know do the content and seen what classes there are the timer is running and you need to run quick before you fail.

but if you want someone to heal you need to make sure the science officer is you know actually able to heal and stick near him same with engineers which is why the ground stuff is best for pugging you put down a shield station or healing station and people either use it or dont for the most part they do cluster around the engineer in ground stuff and if i enter a space thing and decide to actually tank then people need to cluster around the engineer and dps it down without taking agro, but dont expect an engineer to use many heals on you if he is tanking eleventy seventy ships.

bottom line is if your a tactical you actually should not be running away from the group you need to follow the tank or healers not the other way around you are at their mercy if you go out of range dont expect to be healed :)

Good question, OP. I rarely if ever receive direct heals, even though I make it a priority to keep others alive and well, especially in a healer build. Maybe the answer is in the nature of PUGs, where it is rare (in my experience) to find others actually interested in the objective, team dynamics, having fun, and more exceedingly rare actually socializing a tiny bit with fellow trekkies/gamers.

Well said, and one of the very first strategies I started using at the very start of playing this game. Somehow though, others seem to believe constantly withholding the shield healing and other shared abilities for personal emergency use is 'better' when this is a direct example of 'receiving more by giving.'

All the more reason to play with fleet members and other friends.

I heal all the time. (If I'm in range and I notice someone's hull dwindling nearby.)

Even when I play my Tac in the Defiant I've healed Cruisers in need. :D

As a TAC captain flying an Intrepid, I always toss heals to my PUG teammates whenever I notice their HP is under 50%.

Yes, I get that. I would just hope that there are a few (and there are VERY few) players online that favor teamwork over "look at me and my A2B build!" I mean, come on.

There is actually a solution to this... Remove the timers...

That would allow people to go for... well.. almost any build, and it would often still be viable...

On most mission, I have the map over the team overlay.
And when I don't, well, I'm busy keeping myself alive, because I have to tank half the map in pug. I'm sorry if the other half is killing you though.

Sometimes I toss a heal on someone, and die afterward because I have nothing left, which remind me why I never heal anyone^^

Depends on the pugging team. They do happen, although not often enough.

When they do happen, it restores my faith in the community at large. When I see someone doing a HE without sharing, a fleet admiral loses a pip. Truth. Saw that on the interwebs.

Every ship for itself! I will actually toss out heals on the rate occasions that I don't have aggro, but yeah I've noticed that I'm in tnt the minority.

When logs show contribution for all playstyles, when log parsers show that contribution, you'll probably see more balanced teams and team play. When we have positive proof that healing means equal xp award for everyone... etc.

But the logs show only damage, parsers "reward" players ranked highest in damage.

Gameifying this game to show all contributions would be the incentive.

That said I have different playstyles including healing, but I pretty much use that for PvE missions. It's unrealistic to pug and expect quality cooperation.

    By definition.

Well sadly because it is a Pick Up Group. Not a Team.

I try to help the team no matter what char class/ship combo I am using is. However I have generally found that the some players who only focus on DPS without a second thought about there own surriveability are best left to just respawn. I have lost count of the number of times I see an officer in a tactical heavy ship without a single tactical team, or self heal used.

Now for players who do understand that your DPS when respawning is zero. Those players will get what assistance I can afford that dose not risk me respawning. My ships useally have some combination of hazard emitters, engineering team, aux to structural for hull healing. For Shields Science team 2, and Hazzard 1 are always on my sci bridge officer. Heck I will throw my Tactical Teams onto allies that are running low tactical bridge officer ships if they are getting pounded.

One issue I do have is knowing what certain tactical characters plans are. I know that some players want to get that hull down for the damage increase from Go Down Fighting. So tactical class players may not see any healing from my character until that 25% hp mark.

I think that's a cop out of an A2B user. Even with an A2B build, they have access to two non-Aux based heals, engineering team and science team. Then there are also the Aux based heals, that they could pop a battery for.

1.) So you're going to make an assumption about SCIs eh? There are no inherent Science healing abilities (space).
    > Sensor Scan : Reduces damage resistance
    > Subnucleonic Beam : Removes buffs & increases recharge time
    > Scattering Field : AoE Energy Damage increase
    > Science Fleet : Shield hardening shield emitter

2.) You can't know who is going to be agro magnets in a PUG. Almost everyone is a glass cannon out there so even if you do heal them it won't make any difference as they will explode anyway. Additionally, if you do heal them and they die, the agro swaps to you and your heals are most likely on cooldown so you get killed, yay.

3.) If you are so situationally aware, why don't you build a support ship and fly it in PUGs? Coming to the forums to complain about user behavior doesn't do anything. You need to be an example for others so they follow in your footsteps.

Contributing to a group is important. I try to heal others when I can, and I only PUG. Maybe it would be nice if people healed each other more often in groups. It would be nice if everyone didn't hit"Need" on every drop too, but that won't happen. I hit "Greed" 99.9% of the time, so I don't get much, trust me. It would be nice if people didn't do that, but it is not a realistic expectation at this point in this game.

This game is not built on a trinity system. There aren't designated healers. Expecting somebody to take on that role is unrealistic in this game. Bring some heals yourself, it'll probably be better for you in the long run.

    Good Hunting.

Pugs dont use heal because 90% of players dont even know how to play. Its too much for them. If you cant win the queue by simply joining its too hard. And then you cant look out for others.

My SCI Rom is as much of a healer as I can make him. True, there are no true heals in game and whatnot. But applying buffs at the right time can contribute to the healing abilities of the ship it's applied to. So no, I'm not a hypocrite, as you so obviously imply.

It's sort of a result of DPS Elitists (i.e. those who think DPS is everything, and who seem to think that if you're not #1 on DPS tally you should be derided).

I used to go in and heal, but came to notice that certain types of player had zero survivability, and also seemed to be the type to post their DPS parser after along with how other players were "noobs" and "losers" for not reaching their almighty DPS scores. Bonus "Give me a bucket I have to vomit" score to those who also ignored any problems for fear of intercepting a problem for fear it slightly lowered their precious DPS for a minute.

So I made a decision to only heal ships that displayed some level of ability to survive and heal themselves. And because healing became less 'instinctive', it happens less on ships that might need and deserve that help. Quite simple really
