If people want to talk about somewhat taboo subjects, they can create a private channel and have at it. However, in the public channels like ESD, First City, DS9, it would be nice to have some sense that there is a moral standard.
Carefull what you wish for. A team of volunteer mods/GM's enforcing the TOS is one thing, having them uphold "moral standards" is quite another.
Lost and Delirious... and Disenchanted too Apparently some forum posters have diplomatic immunity nowadays, where can I get mine?
I had mentioned to Bran Flakes when he was still with the company that it might be a good idea to have someone similar to you in game to keep an eye on chat in various zones. Not a paid position, but a trusted player that, while playing the game, can also keep an eye on things and make sure nothing gets out of hand. If such a position were created, I could see this player - moderator's tickets perhaps carrying more weight than your average ticket.
Ahahahahaha, that wouldn't be open to abuse at all!

Unfortunately there is issues in having community moderators. In some cases, it works fine, in some cases it works great. But in a lot of cases it goes bad when people have an elevated degree of self importance.
It's a case of picking the right people or making a balance. And that doesn't always happen. Human nature however means that it'd get misused even if that was not the intention.
If you've come to the forums to complain about the AFK system, it's known to be bugged at the moment.
"Gamergate" is off-topic for this thread. I doubt we could have a discussion about that which wouldn't get shut down.
Let's keep this discussion limited to in-game TOS violations, shall we? The gender of the complainant is (mostly) irrelevant. A TOS violation is a TOS violation is a TOS violation and harassment of any kind is a TOS violation.

Blue a few have suggested closing this already, and still think it should be since the original issue has been handled. You're call. Thanks for the efforts this far.
Funnily enough I suggested that this thread should be shut down a few days ago and people implied that I had some underhand motive for wanting it to sink to the bottom of the toilet bowl where it belongs.
It did one good thing at the very least.
It prioritized the fix of a clearly abusive and unavoidable trolling tool regardless about anyone's feelings about the various participants.
That is certainly a positive end result. Ends worth the means is a matter of personal evaluation I'm sure, but I'm pleased to see this get addressed properly.

Players will no longer receive Fleet or Bridge invites from players on their Ignore list.
-For this to work, the player must log out and then log back in after placing someone on the Ignore list.
Ok, here's the solution for the fleet invite issue. Post here only if responding to this issue. I'm done trying to police the rest of the conversation.

Yeah I saw some were calling it to be closed, I wasn't going to reread through the posts and find who said it when. So the problem is handled then? We good?

Well that's a start for sure. But we need a way to block these completely. I'm still getting spammed with them right this second, but it doesn't say who sent the invite so I can't add them to my ignore list. I already have five of this particular guys accounts on my ignore list so I'm guessing he's made more.
Join date is wrong, I've actually been around since STO Beta.
True alters don't have a "main". Account wide unlocks for all unique event rewards!!
Technical question: Does anyone know if it's technically possible to ban this guy based on his MAC address instead of his IP address? Because the MAC address is hard-coded to the computer. He'd have to replace his network card, which these days means replacing the entire motherboard.

Is there a way that i'm missing on how to view @handles from either incoming challenge map invites, or from within the challenge lobby? As he's just botting, the match wont ever start, but right clicking/hovering over the name just displays their rank, not @handle. WIthout that, I cannot file a report. Or ignore the handle if I haven't already. Am I missing something here?

Not so much. Anyone with a little bit of knowledge can change or spoof a MAC address easily. MAC addresses only need to be unique on a single LAN segment. They're not intended to provide non-repudiation nor identification at the IP layer.
EDIT: A more complete answer would be that the MAC address is not normally visible at the IP layer, which means they can't open the packet and see YOUR MAC address. The game client could potentially read it off the computer and send it separately, but that wouldn't work either because of things like multiple interfaces, private addressing, etc. Also, people take a dim view of game clients sifting through computers for information.

What bluegeek said was the sad fact, they know how to change pretty much whatever is needed to be changed in order to continue trolling behind a keyboard.
I am trying to get myself spammed invites in game to see if the ignore function is working, but no luck. It may be known I'm trying to get them to stop so reverse ignorism could be a cause. I would almost feel bad to know the trolls have ignored me
Don't shoulder all this responsibility yourself! You don't have to advise us -- the Devs already have
In other news: Invites are still trickling in for some people. I received a few, but it went away after relogging. Thanks Cryptic!
Thing is a lot of people don't read the patch notes so they are probably not aware. I don't mind. I just want to make sure people are able to get the problem taken care of on their own.
Seems like it is working fine for me now. Game is so much better when I don't have to deal with that stuff.
Edit: Looks like the reprieve was short lived. I am getting the spam again. I checked and I already have the offending account on ignore. Sigh.
No, I am not who you think I am. I am someone different. I am instead a banana.

Why they would target you but not me is disappointing
Didn't someone post in this thread from cryptic that ignore would prevent this from happening?
It was mentioned and it failed

Another trick they might employ is using a Dynamic IP instead of a Static IP. I was part of a Jedi Academy clan a few years ago, and sometimes to ban troublemakers from our server I think we had to do a Range Ban because a regular ban wasn't effective on said troublemaker, as he wasn't reliant on a Static IP number.
Dynamic IP was basically a License to be an TRIBBLE$. We started resorting to other methods of punishment if it kept going. One example was what we called Telefrag Hell, another was throwing them in jail...
we had to get creative. Some might say it was Admin Abuse, but with troublemakers... sometimes its the only language they understand. Of course... over time... we got more and more non English speaking players and... well... how do you enforce the rules when they don't understand a word you're saying? *shrug*
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

It's only a partial fix, and then only to the ignore button. You have to log out and log back in to get it to actually block his spammed invites. And it's still not a permanent solution for the root cause of the problem, that being the griefer. He's still running around in the game harassing players who don't know about the patch.

I've run a few boards for steam games and was a volunteer mod for a few others. Banning a range of addresses causes nothing but problems and can as usual be bypassed by someone who knows how to mock the any of the numbers in the IP range. You normally end up having innocent people blocked while the troll continues to cause problems.
However that's for forum stuff, I didn't think this could cause a problem ignoring someone with the same @name? And as a matter of fact, I've seen the person who originally caused this big dramatic mess, who is not a using a new account, using a Reman character in costumes you would have to pay for to access. This seems to indicate no banning or account action took place, and instead the supposedly enhanced ignore feature was never implemented to begin with.

Second Edit: Okay, it looks like logging in and out after ignoring them does stop the invites. I am advising others to do the same.
