I agree the cost of items and fleet stuff is crazy high! not everyone has a big fleet or spend hundreds of hour completing something only to fine out another big cost is right around the corner! That's why it was better when in was a pay only to play!!!!
You'll have more fun if you just ignore the crafting/upgrade thing and enjoy the parts of the game that are fun for you.
I'm not being sarcastic at all, I was in the exact same boat. The upgrade system is so unbelievably stupid that it was actually making me angry and not wanting to touch this game at all. Then one day I decided to just completely ignore it. This game isn't very hard, it's not the type of game where if you don't have the top of the line you can't play.
Mark XII is easy to get. You can get it from reputation systems for minimal effort (though it does take time.) Mk XIII and Mx XIV are percentage points better. They are better, but not so much that you need to have them or are screwed without them.
Personally, I'm ok with the T-5U system, I'm not ok with the Upgrade system forcing the horrible R&D system on people. As a result, I'm going to upgrade my ship, ignore this crafting TRIBBLE and enjoy the game. I know a horrible system when I see it, and I know players will see it too.
Eventually, it will get changed because no one likes it. It will however, take them a while to get it through their head that this system sucks. Roll with Mk XII and wait for a REAL upgrade system to be implemented.

We have the power in our hands, it's called money. With every coin spent on the store you say "I like paying money for this", with every coin not spent on the store you say "I don't like paying money for this". It's as simple as that.
And then no one forces you to have perfect equipment in any game, especially not in a game that doesn't even require it. So if you don't like the upgrade system (or any system for that matter), play what you like, get what you feel appropriately priced, ignore everything else. Your game, your decisions, your fun, no one is holding a phaser at your head.
I had gave it a shot on Mark 12 but with just 8K daily and the recent purchase on Intrepid Class Ship my dithium ore refined is very low now. Just on two armor plates cost so much on Exchange for very rare so just upgrading them cost almost a million EC and double digits in dithium just ot make them Mark 13 rare or very rare.
I am sure going from Mark 13 to Mark 14 under level 60 would be worst. I am taking a back seat and just get what I need on Tier 5 reps which I have to grind on PVE to get more marks from Borg side for Maco gear that I want for DR. Upgrade specs are so small to even worry about update grinding!
I'll grind daily to get what I need and I had started up the DOF tasks again so they're working very hard. I see a lot of failed task too. Some cost 10 to 50K in EC. I don't think so!
Don't take the fun out of the game! It's suppose to be fun to play! I hope DR missions will be just that FUN!

MAYBE someday I will bother with it.. at the very very least I am not touching it till the bugs get worked out. Definitely not touching any set gear with the things until I know for sure they won't get broken.

Further more i have cancelled my purchase of the delta ship pack and i cancelled 3 sub. But this is pure and simple a run for money.

I have no plans to participate in it either. Not because I do not like it but because I do not PvP and the PvE Content does not require Mk XIII or XIV Gear to complete it.
You obviously have not tried the new content on Tribble without upgrading your ship.
It may not REQUIRE new gear to complete [actually, NO content in STO does, btw], but if you DO NOT upgrade stuff before taking on the new enemies, you must have A LOT of time on your hands because those fights are insanely time consuming without new/upgraded gear.

Welll...technically, since I'm LTS [after having been swindled out of $600 for a $300 LTS because they claimed to have no record of my double-charge which was due to Starbucks' connection resetting in the middle of the transaction], I don't actually PAY for anything, but I'd love to have that 'I Win' button ^_^

theres nothing wrong with the upgrade system if you use it properly, theres no rush to do anything, you can plod along as you always have, playing the game having fun then when you feel like it and have a bit of spare dilithium take a glance at all your kit and see if theres anything you would like to raise by a tier.
no need to spend money, no preasure, no need to tie yourself up in knots or get in a state, its just a useful tool that you can use from time to time if the feeling takes you, but like any other tool you don't have to use it until you want to and have the time and resources to do so.

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

Back in City of Heroes I never posted anything in the Auction House for more than 100 Influence.

$13,000 in 4 years, I'll admit it freely, and about 1,000 of that was on Dil back when the ratio was 420 to 1 when it hit....
