Step : ignore the most loyal and most willing to pay money player base
step 2: ???
step 3: profit.
Idk how many times I have to say this but league of legends and star craft aren't popular because they are "casual" they are cash cows because they are actively BALANCED and pvp focused.
I myself have dropped at least a grand on this game AFTER becoming a lifer and the game going f2p.
but now I am done. I have worked for a video game publisher. I understand the pressures the Devs are facing and the simple fact this isn't just a game I enjoy it's a business ment to make money, but I promise you RIOT game's business model isn't "target casuals and alienate pvpers"
Give me a pvp season. "Return to trieskelion" or something like that. With all the peace between rival factions we need a safe place for captains to blow off steam. The gamesters of triskelion have returned to fill that void with a universal tounament. All equipment is balanced and equal with pvp counterparts just like guild wars 2 ' s heart of the mists.
there cryptic. I just doubled your player base and saved you from the mass exodus that will follow when the delta quadrant launches.

Not to rain on your parade, but LoL actively balances pvp because they have major major contests and battles that pay out real cash. If they didn't they'd lose a lot more than just money.
I can guarantee a pvp season, where all equipment is balanced and such would not double the player base and there isn't going to be a mass exodus that you think will be when the next expansion pack comes out.
On the contrary there will probably be a massive influx, especially on launch.

You're a idiot. A actual PVP season would bring back a lot of older players and revive PVP.
But, it doesn't really matter. Your Chinese overlords have already destroyed the possibility with their "zen" grind model. Mind you, I"m all for the model if it was moderate. But spending $1000+ per character to power level or spend months grinding, daily, is dumb. It's a game and it should be fun. It's not. It's that simple.
At least Cryptic provided a somewhat fun PVP engine, albeit, buggy. Atari helped fix some of those bugs. And frankly, it was hella fun in 2010-2011. Since f2p, PVP hasn't been that fun. It has had it's moments. But overall, more time has been spent grinding/farming verse actually pvping.
Most my characters were leveled doing expanse missions and PVP. It was great. Try doing that now?
Anyway, looking forward to the event on the 4th. I hope it's not the last fun PVP event but I have a suspicion.

^ Correct.
Lol yes, somehow my years of experience in mmo's makes me an idiot.
Let me bring you down to reality here. PvP was NEVER, EVER A BIG THING IN STO. Not because it wasn't balanced, but because majority of star trek players (which is the majority of this game) don't WANT to pvp.
That's the hard truth. Don't want to hear it or believe it? Not my fault you fail to understand the truth.

I would say there's never been a huge interest in STO PvP because Cryptic has never given a substantial reason for there to be. To say Trekkies don't PvP, well what statistics are you basing that on? Did you do a survey of all Trekkies that are also gamers?
If the rewards for playing were there, the players would do it, if even just for the rewards. But the rewards for playing PVP have been a joke.
STO PvP could attract other players, not just Trekkies if the PvP were more balanced and attention was given to it.
You could say that DoTA2 and LoL are hugely popular and succesfull, and balanced because they offer money and have contests. I'd say the opposite is true: they are hugely successful and popular because they support their community and provide a quality, balanced, and fun PvP experience and as such are able to provide those payouts and contests because their players "customers" reward that and allow them to do so.
Cryptic is stuck in a vicious cycle with STO where they won't do anything that they see as a potential risk and only continue to limit themselves and shoot themselves in the foot. There's no vision, no ambition, no thinking outside the box.
There was a huge influx of brand new PvP players after LoR. Huge. And they didn't stick around because of the imbalance, lack of rewards, lack of matchmaking, etc. If we would've even just had the Solo/Duo queue that we have now back then, I bet a lot of players would have stuck around but all the queue stompings that happened really turned everyone off from it.
PvP was NEVER, EVER A BIG THING IN STO. Not because it wasn't balanced, but because majority of star trek players (which is the majority of this game) don't WANT to pvp.

Actually, you couldn't be further from the truth.

That is even more the case in MMORPGs or MMOFPS games.
It is the essence of the genre. Game has either strong cooperative PvE or strong competitive PvP, where even PvE has competitive component(record runs etc.)
Furthermore, In F2P model, core players that sustain the game you can divide in 2main types of players:
1. Players that are able AND willing to invest MONEY
2. Players that are able AND willing to invest TIME
First type provides majority of game income, second provides majority of entire player base.
First type also have more of what you would call "casual" players, and second type has more "hardcore" players.
Also, F2Players that invest more TIME in game naturally develop better understanding of game-mechanics and skill, which in turn provides the incentive for P2W players to invest more MONEY in new and better gear.
A perfect marriage, right? Right?
Would be if it were not for tiny factor called "the core player base"
Those are players that are willing to spend TIME and sometimes they are tempted to spend some small amounts of MONEY.
Those players need are what you could call "Average Joe".
More of "Joes" active, game is more successful, but "Average Joe" doesn't keep multiplayer games alive.
So, what is happening in STO?
There is a severe lack of challenge in game in pure game play aspect.
Small retrospective:
Before season 7 main challenge in game was in Fleet Starbase leveling with Exchange as natural addition.
When more and more fleets started hitting max levels, Cryptic introduced diffferent additions to fleet system, namely Embassy, Mine and Spire.
Before season 7 PvE missions were few and let's say somewhat challenging for "Average Joe".
Then they've started focusing heavily on Reputation System that along with new Fleet Holdings gear enabled "Average Joe" to breeze through most difficult PvE missions and be somewhat competitive in PvP without investing second thought on game mechanics.
(DOFFed skills, lobi gear, cheap dilithium in Dyson zone, spacebar autopilot ship builds)
Meanwhile, hardcore player base and P2W players were busy with New Romulan faction and with breaking records in STFs, NWS and manipulating exchange.
That also stopped representing any challenge after very short time.
In all that time from season 7 to season 9.5 all Cryptic has done is just expanding on Fleet model, exchange model and reputation model, without actually upping the challenge bar for everyone.
That is what people mean when they say "lack of content".
Content actually means challenge, incentive to play. Expanding on grind conditions is not content.
So, where are we now?
Delta Rising notes say that they will actually up the PvE challenge by introducing Advanced mode, with Elite being much harder.
Also, 10 new levels, skills, gear etc.
Let's say that on paper it looks like PvE part of game will be challenging again, and people will again have some incentive to play it.
PvP however is getting no love. There is less and less incentive to PvP, even if it could represent more challenge with new ships, skills, levels and gear.
Core mechanics around PvP remains the same, with no sense of general game(gaming) accomplishment; no leaderboards, no PvP specific gear, no expansion in PvP modes, no balancing system, all at the same time while major changes are happening in main pillars of game economy and core game mechanics(and core player base).
So, in your opinion PvP in this game doesn't matter?
Do you think people bought Recluses, Wells, Bugs and Palisades for PvE?
Do you think people invested so much in Lobi, Keys, Doffs and other OP gear for PvE alone?
Do you think majority of people will invest more TIME and MONEY just to be able to link shiny MKXIV gear in ESD chat?
If the hardcore player base stops seeing challenge and stops finding incentive to play, that will in return drive away P2W players, and in the end it will drive away core base which will have no will to reach hights of hardcore player DPS in PvE or skill in PvP.
MMOs cannot survive only on grinding mechanics alone, Role Playing(social component) without actual Gaming component.
And just to underscore where you are so terribly wrong, Star Trek fans that, like you say, don't care for PvP(or gaming challenges) at all are getting even less love then PvPers:
3 small Featured missions in 2 years, lore being broken beyond recognition, and biggest irony of all, entire economics system of Federation looks like Ferengi wet dream, and PvE plot like Klingon/Hirogen wet dream.
But we all get new possibilities to make more letters, colors and numbers on gear, PvPers, PvErs and RPers, while all 3 want something else. Namely to PLAY Star Trek GAME, not to play Chance Based Crafting.
I mean, common, in future you will make gear by chance? Scientists and engineers will not know what they will get if they mix 2 components?
It's SCIENCE FICTION, not Fiction of Science.
that, and the complete lack of faction balance. Pre-season 7, the ques were divided, and PvP was really pretty active even really late at night.
post-season 7, and unless you're on organized channels, finding a match in the "new, more open ques' is nearly impossible outside of mid-day on a weekend.
with mixed, RvB ques...which will be even MORE necessary after Delta is released with it's 5+2 to 2 ship balance at Tier 6 and the slanted trait delivery, (as well as slanted stat layout-you're an idiot to play KDF at tier 6 based on the numbers).
I've felt like one for a while. I thought it was just me.:(
That lack of vision, and have the responsability of take decisions related to the future of the game...luckily

You're right I am just a forum moderator. But even if I was a developer, I still wouldn't spend a lot of time on pvp. Why? Because the returns are a "maybe" not a "guarantee". Yes, I'd like some pvp additions. I've said that a hundred times over. But I'm also realistic. There will most likely never be a pvp season, nor any major major dedication to pvp because the returns would be minimal and more than a good chunk of the player base would be screaming about the fact they spent all that time on pvp when they want more content.

by extension you wouldnt invest in the kdf, nor would you have introduced the romulan faction. just fed ship after fed ship and full-tilt powercreep.
in any case, the sentiments brought up in this thread are the very things that make me apprehensive about x2. these days i dont look forward to patches and updates, i dread them. im feeling so apathetic anymore that i havent logged in for two days now. i dont think i have willingly spent two full days away from sto in nearly 4 years. its getting easier to skip a day here and there, now two days here and there... in a few months it might be pretty easy to just walk away for good once i realise my entire inventory (and my faction) has become obsolete.
argue against that however you may, but that is how i feel.

Thanks for making my point even more accurate. I think i fell short with "lack of vision"
p.d: read something about this game history first, sto started as a game with a HEAVY orientation to pvp. One entire faction was 100% devoted to PVP, you had to level up from 1 to 50 just by doing pvp
doubtful. There will be massive temporary and short term influx of people looking to exploit easy kills and I-win-powers, but they'll tire of playing with other Delta-pack owners and go back to playing with themselves in PvE.
but hey, you'll have made Ker'rat permanent safe for farming, and isn't that really the important thing?
Oh my dear man, Ker'rat will never be safe for farming. Never.
MWAHAHAHAHAHA

Incorrect. The romulan faction would have happened as it's a major asset to the star trek ip, thus bringing in another interest group. Not to mention it was highly anticipated for years and wanted by numerous players. KDF was a necessary update. As they kept saying they were going to do it sooner or later. If they would have brought in the romulans as a 1-50 faction then things would have gone flippy crazy on the forums, media outlets etc.

kdf ended up this way due to a lack of development and split pvp queues, not due to its pvp focus (which was taken away incidentally).
its clear to me now that youre nothing less than an apologist.

Actually... yeah. People wanted to play as a KDF, they posted that many times but they didn't want to sit there and level up using pvp. They wanted missions.
But of course I don't know what I'm talking about.. and sure I'm an apologist. So I'm an idiot, apparently new to this game not knowing anything, and an apologist.

There's more PvP to be found in STO outside of PvP. It's that type of game.
Playable Talaxians would do wonders for Ground PvP.
The current model will fail, soon or latter. It may have success when you launch the expansion, but is a dead end. This video explain it perfectly

I've felt like one for a while. I thought it was just me.:(
You're right I am just a forum moderator.

Oh my dear man, Ker'rat will never be safe for farming. Never.
MWAHAHAHAHAHA
You must be new here. I've been here since closed beta, I'm aware of how the KDF was. And we saw how that went didn't we?

kdf ended up this way due to a lack of development and split pvp queues, not due to its pvp focus (which was taken away incidentally).
its clear to me now that youre nothing less than an apologist.

But of course I don't know what I'm talking about.. and sure I'm an apologist. So I'm an idiot, apparently new to this game not knowing anything, and an apologist.
