I logged in today and I'm like, "Oh, they added some new gimmicks. Huh." Found it mildly interesting for about thirty seconds, but it doesn't affect the core gameplay. Still orbiting the thing with my beamboats and parking and merrily blasting away with my Tor'Kaht, and the entity's still dead in five minutes.
OP: Learn to play.

Personally, I rather have it reward the original reward instead of a duty officer. The Crystal fragment space pet is the best reward that this event has ever given.
Curious, i ended first almost all of the times using my Arkif loaded with turrets and DCHS... are you sure about that?? what other factors can make someone to be first?
As I understand, the placings are actually only considered within your 5 man team. But even if not - if the rest of the team isn't that great, you can easily get 1st. I think I actually went first on my first run of the (regular Elite) Crystalline Entity event a few months ago. I think I was in an SV with Gravity Well then. That, by the way, is always a good start for the CE.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.

A strat that works: Be sure to hit every single tholian at least once, Heal alot (yourself or the team), try not to die, and spend as most time as possible hitting the CE.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
We finally get a bit of variation in a mission again, as well as a slight bit of extra challenge and you immediately want it removed. Stop it, stop it now!
I seem to do fine in that and the queue is done in less then 15 minutes even when I pug. One thing you should remember is that the little shards are a pain in the butt. They do hurt when they jump you. So things thay push them away or Beam Fire At Will, Cannon Scatter Volley, Torpedo Spread and even dodging them seem to do the trick. Also one other thing is that the big buy like to do that shockwave. He only does it twice. He activates the shockwave at 80% and 33% (or close to them numbers). Just get 12km away and you will not pop.
Tactics is what comes down to it. This isn't like it was 2, 3 years ago with the crystalline entity where you had a five team and you had to fly to it. That was freaken hard and when you got too close you go POP. I feel it has been dumbed down a lot since then with all this tholian and little shard nonsence.
Edited: I also, just like to say, some people do find it hard and others find it stupid easy. I think its just the build and our tatics that we use in the queue. If you stay in once place, that really doesn't help. Well that's my thoughts on it. Cheers!
Actually now that you mention it, it does seem a bit easier.
I think that maybe at this point everyone is accustomed to fighting it even in its enhanced state. OP aside of course. But considering that I run it every day on all my characters during this event, that means that strictly counting this event not the normal queue, this is the third or fourth time its happened since I started play, that means I've played it by the time this event is done, 336 times since it came out. 84 runs per event. So anyone playing it that much should pretty much have the hang of it.
Maybe it is time for the devs to switch it up and give the entity some new tactics and abilities.

Seriously this PvE(variation) is not that hard just don't fly into stuff, no different than any other MMO Raid event. Although I wonder if this is just a troll post but just in case you are having trouble with it:
