Personally I don't see why they would scrap the most successful design in starfleet history even in canon, I would expect them to take the design back to the development stage and as themselves "Okay, how can we remodel the interior and systems to bring them up to date?" build a few test ships and eventually decide on a new line of Excelsiors and mass produce them.
The U.S.S. Lakota might be considered a move in that direction. While the more standard models were built with up to date technology, and refitted when needed, the Lakota was a clear demonstration of what Starfleet could really do with the old girl.

Without doubt, Starfleet techs can keep a ship up to date for a very long time. But even with the latest tech availlable, the Lakota could just be on par with the Defiant. (Yeah, she's exceptionally strong for it's size, but not in the same league as a Nebula or Amassador.)
I think she had a good time, but now (TNG movies) she's going to be step by step replaced with the Sovereign.

It's not about size though, if it were about size the Defiant would be no match for the Lakota (not that the Lakota used everything in it's arsenal anyway). As it is the Lakota was only a retrofitted version of the original ship class, so we still don't know what she could do with a full redevelopment (ie strip everything but the shell and spaceframe out and rebuild from scratch)
Heck, it's possible the spaceframe itself could be modified with new materials, design and engineering knowledge to make it more efficient, it is centuries old after all, it's a bit like how the KDF Bird of Prey hasn't had a design change in centuries, it's just had system redesigns complete rebuilds etc.
Lakota showed that she still has a few more decades of service left but even that refit can only do so much. Starfleet is not like the KDF in this reguard. And it's not the Sovereign that's replacing her, it's the Akira.
Excelsior is a fine ship. The textures and look are fine. More transwarp locations would be nice to have. Like others, I would like to have more interior options for the ship. As for a hangar, it doesn't need it.
I actually think that the TOS movie ships should be capped at tier 5(Excelsior, B'Rel, Oberth). Though I also think the TOS series-era ships should be able to go up to tier 4. =p
Gee why not give it a gal x styled Spinal lance complete with a special unique damage type that bypasses shields, and auto crits for a min damage of 75k and has a 30 second cooldown while were at it.
well, now that you mention it:D
but you forget a 90% accuracy, because all the things you said is fun but serve no purpose if it is to miss the target:rolleyes:
An this isn't enough for you fed scrubs, you want a hanger added to it too ?
It was just a suggestion. I mean the ship's certainly big enough for one. The Vesta has a hangar. I could see the Excelsior getting one.

I know you're being snarky but that's not a bad idea. Obviously it would have to be more in line with the regular big-gun-powers in the game already (3 minute cooldown, stuff like that). But that might be a fun idea.
Maybe make it a console (like the Kumari's tactical console). Maybe give out another console for the T3. And a third console for the T6 that should be debuting. And viola, there's a chance to have an Excelsior 2 and 3 pc SET BONUS.
Maybe even make the Excelsior allowed to equip the federation cloaking device/console?
Just spitballing ideas here.
There's got to be more that can be done with this ship to keep it fresh, current and competitive.
There's got to be more that can be done with this ship to keep it fresh, current and competitive.
Yes cause being one of the best cruisers in the fed line up isn't enough to keep it competitive.... new costume option isn't really needed there is no 2409 version of the ambassador either. Only thing i would do is change the 3rd ens eng to a uni, and that is purely cause i dont want to see any ship have 3 same class ens powers if possible, cause most of the time its a waste.
But before the excel gets that, I direct you to the rest of the ships that are in much bigger need of love, like the nebula, the G-r etc.

The GR thread is one I fully support. It's just there's like a zillion great ideas, and the ones I think would work have already been posted in very good detail by others.
The Nebula I have a harder time coming up with good ideas for since it's a science ship and I struggle with ideas to improve science ships.
Still, I wholeheartedly agree that folks should offer more and more feedback and ideas in those respective threads.
Maybe someday if we're super lucky, those ideas will see the light of day. I hope they do.
It was just a suggestion. I mean the ship's certainly big enough for one. The Vesta has a hangar. I could see the Excelsior getting one.
That's in fact something i could imagine.
Isn't the big "belly" on the underside of the engineering hull meant to be a shuttle bay?
But please don't make it a carrier, one more carrier in STO and i get really sick.

I would rather see such a modification on the Heavy Cruiser, but not the Excel TBH.
Maybe even make the Excelsior allowed to equip the federation cloaking device/console?
WTF? (no offense )
Please no Fed ships sneaking around, other factions may find it "honorable" to hide and backstab others but Starfleet doesn't (shouldn't) make that a common practice IMO.
How about giving the Excelsior somekind of stationary turret to deploy?

I know a lot of people like it, but compared to the Galaxy, Sovereign or Odyssey, the Excelsior is an ancient tub. Just because a few devs have decided it should remain the toughest in the fleet so far (which goes against all common sense) shouldn't mean that should continue.
Also, it's about the ugliest thing Starfleet ever made (well, maybe apart from the Ambassador class). It makes the Centaur look pretty...
Give the newer ships some love, we don't all want to be riding in horse-drawn carts when we can have the best modern tech.
OP is talking about a visual update, and nowhere did he use the word 'underpowered.'
I'm not sure where you get the idea that the OP in his first post talked about only visual updates.
From the first post:
"The workhorse of the Federation is long overdue for a Retrofit. From experimental trans-warp to diplomatic missions, the Excelsior has more then lived up to the expectations of Starfleet Captains everywhere, I would hope the Devs take a look at her and see that the next gen of that class could do."
Then he goes on to here to now start talking about non-visual stuff, namely start switching the BOFF setup around.
Which ironically is a terrible idea since the Excelsior BOFF setup is one of the best Cruiser ones in the game across both factions for a long time now.
Honestly it better not get a T6 full upgrade. I use the ship constantly it is my fav, but that'd just be insane to show THAT much love to that ship while the others get the shaft.
they could still come out with a T6 cruiser that looks a lot like the excel.
A ship class that is what 124+ years old and you all want it to go to tier 6?!
DAFRAK?!!! Sorry Excelsior has long had it's day. I don't hate the Excelsior class, hell I love it. But there are other ships WAY more deserving to go to tier 6.
Regent class, Galaxy, Odyssey, Avenger, Vesta and the list goes on.
Time to retire the old girls since there are newer workhorses in the fleet IE: Exeter, Excalibur and Vesper classes.

Umm... those are just refits of the Connie though... hence we don't see them at endgame, The Excel on the other hand still has a lot of potential, especially if taken back to the development board (which would have to be done to create a T6 design) and rebuilt with new technology, who knows, maybe she could go for another 124+ years.
Everyone knows that come Ex-2, when other ships can be upgraded to T6, the Excelsior will be automatically updated to be a T8 ship, with 16 Captain BOFF slots, 24 tac consoles (only 6 eng and 6 sci though), 14 forward, and 14 rear weapons, plus a super new Auto-Kill-All-Enemies AoE weapon with a 30km range, 400k Dmg (ignores shields) and no cooldown.

It's "potential" in STO lies in some devs love for it.
On the other hand a new designed ship, based on the Excelsior could be created.
If it's design would be a bit modernized and organic looking, i think it could be a real beauty.
But if the Excelsior gets such a treatment, other iconic ships should get that too IMO.
Let's be honest, we all know that the Excelsior got only such a awesome BOFF/console layout because capt. Gecko likes it, while other fan favorites are total TRIBBLE in STO.

EHHHHH WRONG ANSWER on the connie refits. Brand new ships BASED on the Constitution, not refits of said ship.
Hence the reason why I said the Exeter/Excalibur/Vesper (since most of those were built 2392 and up) should see tier 6 long before Excelsior should.

I have a feeling that 75% of the people giving the Excelsior a bad rep have probably never flown one. It is a great ship and its tough as nails. I have flown every ship that has been introduced in the game and I have always gone back to the old work horse. I look forward to seeing a tier 6 version or something that can be changed on the Tier 5 Excelsior to make it even more of a work horse. In short show respect to a ship that has earned its stripes.

Bingo. I can engage a shipyard cube in Cure, and do a lot of damage in the time period of remaining invulnerable before being forced to retreat for the cd

Sounds like you need to do a little work on your buff timings, I don't have to disengage CSE cubes. (unless a spawn set comes up)
Of all the ships that I feel need an 'update', the Excelsior doesn't even make the top 10.
Pretty much this. Gal-R, Intrepid and Defiant(and even then it's a stretch) could use updating to hit Excelsior levels before giving the grand ol gal of the fleet an update.

1 Bazillion % agree. Not in game specs or design. If Cryptic wants to spend time "fixing" any ship, then there are a few others that need to attention.

How bout the fact the Odyssey is supposed to be the most advanced cruiser in the fleet and the Excelsior just walks all over it?
How bout we start there?

Currently the Fleet Excelsior is only as great as it is (Top 5 Fed Ships, slight worse than the FACR) because of A2B. Once A2B gets nerfed / removed and there is no way to supplement its lack of Tactical Bridge Officer Slots and there'll be a notable dps loss on it (but an increase in tankiness due to freeing up 2x A2B)
You can compare it to the FACR in that the FACR really doesn't need to A2B to succeed as it has the Ensign Tac to run 2x TT, 2x FAW.
But this is why the Fleet Excelsior is one of the if not the best user of A2B in the game and why A2B isn't broken and makes more end game ships viable. Makes it pew, and makes it tank like no other.
Visually it could use more than the couple of paint jobs its got. Maybe add in the Curry-class or 4 nacelle Alpha Excelsior variants (please?)
Or use that Hanger Bay for something (But that would be way too OP)
