No Upgrade Path from Tier 5.x to 6

macroniusmacronius Member Posts: 2,526
Just to highlight this. There will be NO upgrade path from Tier 5.x to 6. Not even a heavily monetized one. Anyone who thinks Tier 6 won't be significantly better than 5 just ignored what happened with crafted gear and is plain deluded.

I don't really know how anyone can support this decision. No raging ... name calling or anything. Just the whole idea of all those c store and fleet ships and everything else eventually being discarded. Wow!

I was actually assuming the new crafting procs were supposed to accommodate the new ships in some way?

And I don't think they will be "better." On par with Lockbox ships, OP and whatnot. But not "better" exclusively.

As an owner of several lockbox ships and fleet ships, I can tell you I'm not the slightest bit concerned.

And only possible when information is lacking. Information that someone made a decision not to share yet likely for a reason. Likely in an attempt to build hype and excitement.

So they will get speculation and conjecture. They deserve nothing else at the moment.

You know Iconians ... we are going to have this conversation again in a few months. I am completely calm because I got my enjoyment out of my ships. But I am done with all updates and spending ... been that way for almost a year now.

I am sure you will be defending them no matter what. This is the part that leaves me puzzled. We know their track record. Crafting revamp proved that decisively. And yet people like you persist in hoping for the better ...

As I pointed out more than once in the other thread, it will probably be like the Galaxy Upgrade. Yes, it sucks. But, at this point, can anyone really be surprised? I mean, when they say "upgrade," they really mean, "new item for purchase." Or for grind. Or whatever negative adjective you choose to employ. The old versions are updated, NOT free. Or easy to obtain. And possibly CRAZY hard to unlock in game. New grind, new rat race. That's what passes for "new" content now.

We should probably keep all the Tier 6 ship speculation in one thread:

    http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=1185131

I will be updating that thread with Mr Rivera's exact words on the matter when I get the linked video.

It will also cut down on the forum clutter regarding such a hot-button topic.

We likely will. But the conversation will be decided over what information is actually revealed by Cryptic. At this present moment, I'm not concerned. I have no reason to be concerned. Nothing has alerted me to think my fleet ships and lockbox ships will be made obsolete.

I choose not to give into fear and paranoia. I choose to remain objective on the matter up until we're given the information we require.

Whether I defend or support their decisions will be based entirely on what their answers to our questions are.

If I do not like their answers, you and others will hear about it. You can ignore it (just like you apparently ignore all of my other negative criticisms about Cryptic), but it doesn't mean it won't happen.

If I like their answers? Then I will remain cautiously optimistic.

But there's no point in getting worked up over what might be when I can remain chill and wait patiently for answers.

I only bought c store and fleet ships. But I accumulated 9 of them across 7 toons. There is 0 chance I will spend full price(more probably) to replace each one ... or even some of them.

I think vets will be on my side. I will be shocked if they get a ton of new players to pony up $25 or $30 for tier 6 ships. Not in this economy ... and not on this game.

Not if they've played since beta. That's my point.

I really don't have a problem with the level increase and new ships. Their existence alone is not a threat. My concern is how they are supposed to be obtained. This game has gone the way of gear grinders -- "my stuff is better and I have a better ship, so I'm a better PLAYER!" You know the type.

How they handle distributing these new ships (and equipment, and weapons, and whatever else they're releasing with it) will likely determine the fate of this game. No, no doom. I'm saying will it stay with the handful of purists who love Star Trek, or will it fall to the transient F2P gear grinder audience? Time will tell.

I guess we shall see. Their sales were tanking already by all indications and I don't see this making things any better. Add in a "metric ton" of bugs and slow fixes to finish it all off.

    Tanking according to who?

That's one thing that always bugs me. WHERE are people who have no connection to Cryptic getting this data on sales? If we go by talk on the forums then its a miracle STO survived Season 7 at all, let alone made it all the way to 9.5 and the upcoming Expansion!

Right now all we have is the words of Geko. We have no Dev Blogs or anything that shows concrete evidence of what exactly is coming. So I for one will not jump on the tinfoil hat wagon until I know more about what is coming.

In the meantime... I'll enjoy the DOOOOOOOM thread. Its always fun.

My only speculation comes from my observation of patterns with Cryptic. Usually the good news comes out quickly. The worse the news is for players, the longer they wait to tell you details. The longer we go without specifics will be my gauge for how much the news will not be good.

I am confused by something though. Something that just doesn't make logical sense to me.

You see the new T6 ships with their fancy new powers and, most importantly new boff type slot, will directly appeal to those players who have grown bored with the current very stale ship build options. A raw stats upgrade without the new options to existing ships will not be very interesting to them. I fall into this category.

The new/casual players who would still find those older and more limited/restricted ships desirable will be unlikely to want to deal with a complex upgrade process instead of just getting a ready to go new ship.

I will admit I am speculating wildly. But I expect the new T6 ships to have the standard current boff layouts except a second lt upgraded to a lt cmdr of the new boff type. I expect that new boff type to be the primary defining feature of the T6 in some capacity.

This creates a contradiction for myself. I have no desire to upgrade my existing ships for an extra anything that doesn't create new options. I also have no desire to repurchase ships for all my characters. It also makes the entire upgrade system a complete waste of development.

    Hopefully my speculation is wrong.

I hope we're wrong. I really want to see this expansion work out. LoR wasn't terrible, per say (though I do have issues with it). If that's the best they can do, I'd like to see X2 duplicate it.

Damage control I guess on your part. I would be perfectly happy to be wrong. But you can't deny my logic:

    1. No direct upgrade to Tier 6 from Tier 5.x
    2. Tier 6 will have features not available in 5.x (even if it is upgraded)
    3. Tier 6 makes Tier 5 obsolete ...
    4. Tier 4 is perfectly usable in the weak sauce PvE you have here (even elite) but it is still obsolete and most people fly fleet / retrofit or lock box.

I expect all of these points will be supported by blogs!

    LOL...

I am sure they will save the last few dev blogs to talk about the conversions, hard caps, and nerfing. Roughly many of have seen these kinds of and you can't really call them developments because what they are doing is lowering the ceiling on XII gear and then the new stuff will be at the level/grade/mark that the gear is now. So essentially what will happen is all of our current stuff will be nerfed and will be forced to regrind to the stats our ships have now.

More importantly I'd wager anything pretty much that the tier 6 ships will probally be all federation or lockbox/lobi. The KDF like the "track record" of it we will get even further behind the power creep since the source of it doesn't even sound like its addressed in expansion 2 lol.

Also let's not forget about the work and effort that went into their MK12 Gear as well. (Lockbox MK12s, Reputation Mk12s, and Fleet Mk12s). Heck, the new Ultra Mk12s just literally came out and it's already obsolete with MK14s. (Which Rare Mk14s would be equivalent to Ultras).

Yes, absolutely. Look at the ridiculously OP science consoles from crafting costing 200 million. Who exactly is dumb enough to pay for those with this announcement.

Oops ... MK XIV is available soon ... go grind another 200 million EC ... or sell another 70 keys. LMAO.
