Cryptic has gone and made tons of money off the canon ships, included canon ships from all factions, and multiple timelines. Fan favorites, others that aren't. But the point is, they have made all this money.
Now, they introduce a new Tier 6. They can't put any canon ships into the Tier 6, because it would shred any semblance of canon this game has left. But, they need to sell these new Tier 6 ships to make the expansion profitable.
So, the Tier 6 ships will completely invalidate all previous ships. Sure, you might be able to wander around in a Tier 5 or 5.5 ship. In the same way they told us you can wander around in a Tier 2 or 3 ship, if you want to, but it won't ever be as effective as the Tier 5 and 5.5 ships. And so if we want to be effective, we have to buy the Tier 6 ships, no matter how non-canon, how ugly, or how stupid looking they just might be.
Cryptic alone sets the parameters of what is effective and what is not. Therefore, they choose what you fly at the new end game, and can pretty much sell a giant flying brick, and people will buy it, just to remain effective.
Say goodbye to the ships you love. No doubt when the new end game comes, flying anything previously put into the game will be about as effective as taking a current Tier 1.5 TOS Connie into the current end game. You might be able to do it, but it will be the most painful experience you have ever had in this game.

Giant Flying Brick? We got enough of them. The sovvy, the atrox, the obelisk carrier.
We don't need any more bricks, but I am kinda wondering how the heck we are supposed to have the ships we already have and be halfway competitive in STF's and other content.
No, I meant a giant flying brick...literally!
To answer your other question...you won't. You can't. It would be a completely unfeasible economic model for an expansion if they didn't compel you to spend on their new shiny. And that kind of model is simply unsustainable.
Again, they will tell us that our lower tier ships won't be obsolete. It's the same thing they tell people who want to fly around in an Excalibur Class or Vesper Class (Tier 2):
"Sure, you CAN fly around in it, put MK XII weapons on it, maybe even manage to take it into an STF with a group of friends and survive. But it will never do as well as the Tier 5.5 Odyssey over there (just $19.95, order now!) and you just might get shunned from the group finder if you try to use it in a PUG, so you better buy the new shiny!"
Welcome to Expansion 2, where everything we bought before, will go into mothballs. Either that or STO will go lights out 6 months after because they made virtually no money on their new expansion.

I don't care if ships and stuff are obsoletes. I play a mmorpg to improve my character and that's what I expect from updates. I hope they will make more updates like this one.
this right here any mmo with a lvl cap and gear update is gonna do this ur gear well not be obsolete neither well your ship, i for one welcome it and u all cryed about powercreep this well somewhat fix it so get over it and just wait for the info blogs before u QQ over it.
Lucky I didn't spend all my money on a Tier 5 vessel, will wait for the Tier 6 vessels and hope they aren't ugly ducklings like most of Cryptic non cannon designs have been so far.
Has anyone ever heard of optimism before? I mean doesn't it get tired being so negative and down on Cryptic for everything they do? Is STO perfect? Of course not, nothing is and there are too many players to make everyone happy. They do their best and the game moves on. They have to grow the game and they have to make profits or it all goes away. So stop hating on them for trying to make money. And stop hating on them for the canon stuff; CBS approves it and lets be honest, Star Trek is not the best franchise to look to for continuity.
Be happy...we are finally getting the Delta and level 60...plus better ships and gear too! Can we be happy about that and be excited the game is profitable enough they can keep it growing and expanding? I for one would love to milk my Lifetime Sub for a few more years so kudos to Cryptic for keeping the game going and trying to grow it. I look forward to Oct and many more years of STO!
I exclusively like to fly canon ships. Will I be able to fly a Nebula, Akira, Vor'Cha and Mogai and be FULLY competitive at level 60 in PvE AND PvP (i.e. as "competitive" as I am now flying such vessels)?
No (i.e. I'll always be lacking a certain functionality, some slight edge)? --> Goodbye.
Yes (even if I have to buy some upgrade module for Zen)? --> I'm in, after all they have to monetize the game somewhere.

for the love of god do people have selective hearing and reading? are u just not careing this has been asked a billion times and here is the devs answer YES all T5 and T5.5 welll not be obsolete and u can upgrade them to be competative not a full T6 upgrade but yes u can still use it as for pvp lets just kill off pvp it beyond saving and i for one would be glad cause the power creep stuff has ruined all pvp except ker'ret for me lol.

And you believe them? Just because they say it now does not mean that will happen. I'm sure there are plenty of people here that can quote specific instances of Cryptic saying one thing and then doing another and then hiding behind a technicality to say they weren't lying. I believe there are some posts in this thread.
Have no illusions, T6 ships will be better than t5.5 by a lot. We might get a free one that is slightly better but Zen ships and lock box ships, on day 1, will be way better. As far a powercreep goes, there will be much better stuff for sale and in lockboxes that will continue the trend on the day X2 drops. The P2W guys will have a full gear T6 on day 1 and anyone left in a T5.5(even upgraded) with mk xii gear will be dominated in PVP.
Also, I sincerely doubt that the upgrade will be worth the cost. This opinion is based on the fact that everything new in this game since LoR has a ridiculous cost vs benefit.

STO is not an average MMO either, because the subject matter of the IP dictate certain expectations and norms.
One of those expectations / norms is that a starship command lasts somewhere between 5-7 years, not 8-17 days, and upgrading ships like you upgrade your sword in WoW makes no sense for the IP.
Ultimately, the design of the space combat systems in this game were done in a poor fashion, making the constant turnover of ships the norm, rather than the exception.

Easy, reskinning; they did with tier 5 VA and fleet ships. Change the outer look to resemble your favorite ship from progression level. It just be an old body on a new chassis. STO expects us to buy the new toys and will give us the ability to make them look like the older ships or variations based on player preference.

My preference is 60s ToS / early 80s (pre Excelsior) TMP. Where's my T5 Connie?
Expect the same in T6, Connie discussions indicated that they never wanted TNG stuff at T5...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

Exactly.
For 4 years, fans of TOS and ENT got the "this is not the TOS/ENT era, be thankful you got what you did" argument from both players and Devs.
Now, it's time for the TNG / VOY / DS9 fans to get the same treatment, only they haven't fully realized that yet. Being set 40+ years in the future, STO is about to mothball everything canon and become a fully future of Star Trek game.
Fans of canon ships won't like it, but guess what? "Be thankful you at least got 4 years of playing with your favorite ship. But it's obsolete, and now you have to embrace the new shiny if you wish to remain relevant!"

So in other words resistance is futile.
I think not the ships that Cryptic has released in other words the Dyson ships look and play terrible I'd rather play as my own ships and if that means I be blown up in PVP then so be it I just won't PVP. There little else to do in game anyway so if they start releasing all the Cryptic designed TRIBBLE then it will be as I said this game is not Star trek anymore. There is no Trek in this game since season 9.5 anyway. The may as well just call it Star battles or some other game like that this game has become less enjoyable for fans of the show with what this game has become. So if that is what will happen to fans of the show then it will make it easier to walk away when Star Trek Timelines is released

You know what's funny?
This weekend while scrolling through Facebook, I saw an advertisement for a Facebook game. I think it was called Deep Space Encounters or Deep Space Empire or something. But here comes the funny part...the ship that was pictured was one of the variants of the STO Sovereign!
At first when I saw the pic, I thought it might be an STO ad. It wasn't.
But, it got me thinking, there is so very little connecting this game to Star Trek, and it says alot that I could mistake a generic Facebook game for STO, and consequently, vice-versa.

So given that everyone now knows about Delta Rising, any chance of a Dev Blog that actually clarifies the details, so we can stop being annoyed at hearsay, rumours and half-remembered snippets of information and actually get annoyed at cold, hard facts.
You're just a machine. And machines can be broken.

Bit harsh. Smirk and Trendy can't post Blogs without someone from above giving them the OK beforehand.
Not harsh at all really. While someone higher up might have to give the official "oki-doki" before any blogs are published, this is already belated by 48 hours (should've been done simultaneously, or shortly after the STLV announcement). 2 days of no official information whatsoever, since they dropped the bomb shell of Delta Rising on us. In MMO terms, that's an eternity.
OK, Vegas is done... Where is the official announcements? X2 will be an x-plosion of excitement and rants. STO, the ball is in your court for which will be prominent.
I was at the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas this year and there were no STO Devs present. In fact, I looked every where for them and even asked around. No one at the Convention this year knew what STO was.
I was there on Friday and Saturday. No STO Devs anywhere. Maybe the Devs at STO forgot about the Star Trek Convention this year? Well, I guess there's always next year. lol

It was in the schedule as one of the big main events of Sat.

The only way to really solve this conflict is to get some OFFICIAL WORD from Cryptic about whether they were actually AT THIS CON.
Something like a dev blog or a press release.
If only we had something like that ...
Well, they were definitely there. I watched the livestream of the Dev panel.

A couple of Devs (Brad, and Ricossa) were only there for a day or two, but most of us were there all weekend. When we weren't at a panel, we were often hanging out around the G&T booth, or the TrekRadio booth.
Maybe there was some weird time paradox that made me think I was there, but no one else could see or remember me? This is Star Trek after all. . .
