I wonder if there will be a way to up your current tier 5 ships to tier 6. Cause I can see a Lot!!! of people lighting the pitchforks if they don't. Then all the rep gear that was ground out. I have hopes cryptic and faith.
Space is vast, it's wonderful and maddening. Yet in that madness is some of the greatest beauty I have ever seen.
Well. Not sure what to think. A lot of this is just confirming what we already expected, which isn't entirely a good thing. I am very unhappy about the T6 thing, and I basically won't bother to work towards any more ships until X2 -- sorry, Delta Rising -- hits. On the other hand, the new mechanics interest me, as does the potential for new content; here's hoping it's proper story content and not just more battlezones. (I expect we'll get some episodes as a path to 60, so I'm not too worried about that.) The "several other Voyager cast members" thing also interests me; we knew about Wang, but who else will we be seeing?
I guess my overall outlook is one of cautious optimism, tempered with sadness and even a little anger at having all the ships I've worked for over the past four-and-a-half years obsoleted.
Also rep gear. I do not want to have to re-grind for XIV versions of rep sets...
I don't mind that so much as long as it's something like grind/earn/spend 100 marks etc., start a project, wait 20 hours... and your already existing set upgrades to XIV.
Something like that I wouldn't mind so much. But if it were a case of having to start again to gain the same set at a higher rank? Then I'd be seriously peeved!
Also rep gear. I do not want to have to re-grind for XIV versions of rep sets...
With gear it's mostly more grind or such. With ships though, people have spent a lot of money on T5, Fleet and Lock Box ships. If those are going to become "obsolete" with the introduction of T6, then I expect a lot of rage from the playerbase.
Not to mention, all these T6 and Level cap increase stuff means the power creep is gonna increase significantly. The existing content is gonna become a laugh, unless they'll make it solo-able or something.
Not really sure what to think at this point. I'm afraid Cryptic's going the "hey look at our shiny expansion, come and give us some money before you leave bored after a month" route.

And rightly so! It'd be truly outrageous to have all of that investment just thrown away.
The dev's have already noted they will NOT be obsolete.
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.
What's my position?
That people should know what they're screaming about!
(paraphrased from "The Newsroom)
The dev's have already noted they will NOT be obsolete.
Well, that's nice, but unless they tell us HOW they won't become obsolete, or how to make them un-obsolete, I'll just consider that a comforting platitude.
Increasing level cap and making new more challenging content and gear works for many other MMOs, where you just forget about your existing stuff and earn a new, better one, by simply playing the game.
Not so much in STO, where ships basically ARE gear, or a extension of player's character. People have spent a lot of money on their "endgame" ships, either for the looks or power. If all of this is gonna end up being obsolete and made like the T1-T4 ships, which you buy only for the skin/console, then Cryptic'll be shooting itself in the foot. Sure, many people will just buy the brand new shiny stuff, but what about others?
If anything, I expect at least the Lock Box and Lobi ships to be buffed to T6, like they did at one point with the Galor, D'Kora and JHAS, by giving them the 10th console. I'm not so certain about the C-Store and Fleet ships though...
The dev's have already noted they will NOT be obsolete.
Wild speculation here, so take this with a grain of salt.
We're getting a new level cap of 60.
We're getting new t6 ships.
A new top level of gear in MK XIV.
We're getting a new type of BOff.
Now, players have speculated and/or wished for that at some point we'd get to promote our current BOff's to Captain and let them fly around in our "old unused" ships. Since we're all Admirals, it sorta makes sense. And with that we'd essentially be a 'fleet'.
What if this new system they are proposing does exactly this? We players get new t6 ships that are more powerful than our current t5 ships, making our current t5 ships obsolete under the current system. Well, they wouldn't be obsolete with this new set up because now while we players won't be flying them anymore, our BOff's will.
By doing that, they've made our ships obsolete without making them obsolete. By doing this their saying that our current ships won't be obsolete is true.
>.>
<.<
It's also complete horse hockey if this *IS* what they do. You think there were riots over the crafting system? The Devs better hire more security because there will be epic levels of hate and other things thrown at them. Not that I'd be one of them. I play for fun, if the game stops being fun, I stop playing. So far, even with the crafting faux pas, I'm still having fun. I'll be willing to see if the new lvl 50-60 content is fun before writing the game off.
If they *DO* make our current ships obsolete, I might be a bit upset, considering I have almost all the t5 Cstore ships Fed side and several KDF side. I'll wait and see, but... yeah.
edit:
And it seems while writing this up, some fears have been tossed aside. Good.
Hello. My name is iamynaught and I am an altaholic.
Geko said that "some" of the T5 ships will be improved. The way he said that we can safely assume they WILL become, maybe not obsolete, but less desirable. I mean, I imagine they'll be pushing the T6 because $$$...
I imagine it'll be a similar situation like with the 9-console and 10-console ships.
It wouldn't be shocking if they didn't allow the "base" t5 ships to be upgraded. They may be making new base level t6 ships for those people who don't spend money. So that would fit in with the "some" t5 ships being upgradable.
And did I just hear October as a release time frame on the webcast?
Interesting...
Hello. My name is iamynaught and I am an altaholic.
The fact how Geko is evading the question for how to upgrade "old" T5 ships to T6, and whether they can ever be on the same level as full T6 shiny-ships, makes me very very worried.
Citing Geko (more or less): "We want you to be able to improve your T5 ships and then maybe also to enjoy all the -awesomness- that ONLY T6 ships can offer you."...
mmhmmmmhh. It's simple: If T6 can do something (not just purely aesthetic) even upgraded T5 cannot do, then all our current ships, upgraded or not, will not be viable in competitive endgame. For me, the thought that we might not be able to fly canon ships like the Nebula, Vor'Cha or Akira classes as high end ships, but only super sleek, super shiny, super glamorous "2410" ships is most disturbing...
And yes: They are "shooting" for an October release as of now.
I mean, I imagine they'll be pushing the T6 because $$$...
You don't have to push the T6 stuff. There will always be people lining up to buy the newest, shiniest, hotness.
They just went out of their way to say on the Livestream that foremost in their discussions was the idea that they don't want anything people have purchased to be obsolete.
There's a pretty easy, obvious way to do this. You put a 'T6 Refit' kit in the C-Store at some quasi-reasonable price that works with all past C-Store/Lobi/Lockbox ships and let people who don't want to spend more money grind them in game.
Plus, I'm sure they're going to have some kind of 'Pack' to go with the expansion, ala Legacy and Neverwinter, which would then include a few of those refit tokens along with whatever else for $100 or whatever.
New T6 ships? Nonsense, if you ask me. I don't need any new ships, nor new levels of items. I need decent game mechanics and better overall game quality to be able to use ships and other items with a good level of immersion. Space maps are still basically 2D, ship bridges are still void of real use and completely disconnected from the ship's location, the game is full of weak graphics and animation that even runs slowly, there is no exploration and everything is about combat, etc.
Really, there is no end of potential meaningful improvements to the game. I can't believe that others are satisfied with having yet another new ship with more DPS.

Sounds very reasonable and seems a pretty credible scenario.
Not saying I dislike such a solution. Don't really "like" it either, tho...
They have to monetize the game. Question is where exactly. This is as good a way as many others.
The dev's have already noted they will NOT be obsolete.
Yes, but let's not forget that devs have peculiar ideas of what constitutes obsolete. They think MK X and XI gear are not obsolete, yet even a cursory examination of the Exchange clearly demonstrates they are.
I don't care if ships and stuff are obsoletes. I play a mmorpg to improve my character and that's what I expect from updates. I hope they will make more updates like this one.
I am from Belgium and english isn't my main language, sorry if I make mistakes.

Will new lvl 50 Captains now earn a free T5 ship when they reach the lvl 50? hmmmm
Fair point.
And rightly so! It'd be truly outrageous to have all of that investment just thrown away.

EDIT: Yep... There's defo a Dev interview about to happen on TrekRadio... They're just waiting on the thumbs up to roll camera!

So you just keep playing STO as usual...

Not obsolete = there won't be a big difference in PvE. You will hardly feel it.
But did they think about PvP? Where every little 0.1% makes the difference? I promise you all; old ships won't be able to compete in arena anymore.
And what is the PvP Community going to get in exchange for the new grind/dil/zen sink? No new PvP content - that's for sure...
