True. But I really don't want this game to turn into ST: Legacy.
You lost me there. I mean this game is an MMO. The storyline aspect is far more a part of that genre than it was for Legacy.
I mean, this game launched with a whole series of stories. And has been adding them ever since. So I'm just not seeing the Legacy connection when discussing that a new expansion will have players expecting more story missions.
Level 60, or not. I really don't have a burning desire either way. I will say, I had been running the same loadout on a ship for 3 years. MK XII Borg anti-proton, with MK XI tac consoles on an Odyssey. It was a steady 8-9k dps ship in ISE pugs. This year I upgraded the consoles to MK XII locators and picked up a Fleet Avenger. Now I have a steady 11-12k dps boat in ISE pugs. The weapons themselves are still the old 'broken' MK XII borg antiproton that have been deemed useless for years now. And before anyone says, well that's ISE and the borg procs work there. When I do Fleet Alert or CE I am constantly in the top three for overall damage. The only time I feel shamed is when someone who knows how to build a Scimitar shows up and dumps their 20K+ onto the match, which is about once every two or three days.
If level 60 comes with the ability to put some of my 30 or so underemployed bridge officers back to work in their own ships, I welcome it. I enjoy the personnel aspect of STO the most. Expanded Bridge Officer management programs would be cool to me. Not just gearing them up and having them follow me into battle, but maybe something like the doff system, sending their ships out on patrol or diplomatic missions, reviewing reports back from them, having to monitor their progress, giving them advice, maybe having to change their orders halfway through a mission when they report something unexpected. I would really be in to that.
Watch all that stuff be faked and not actually in the data at all. and this was all an elaborate prank just to watch the people complain about an MMORPG being an MMORPG.

True. But I really don't want this game to turn into ST: Legacy.
This is why I say I want an alternative to using other ships.
It's been clear that devs have been working on multi-ship command for years now regardless of what we think. I just hope we have an option to use fewer ships.

I thought Cryptic had already stated they have no intention of increasing ship levels past what we have already, since it would make pretty much everything on the C-Store obsolete. Instead they want to introduce some new abilities and there's the rumoured ability to promote BOFF's to Captain and have a personal fleet where your other ships fly alongside you under AI control. I've also seen nothing to indicate they're going to introduce a new level of equipment either, it just wouldn't make any sense. I suggest we stop speculating and worrying about something which isn't happening yet. Enjoy the game and watch for the S9 blogs .
To those who are pushing for a level cap increase, and MkXIV gear:
Go load up the game and delete your oldest, favorite character. Your "main", if you will. Then recreate them and go out to grind all the assets that they used to have.

Go ahead, I'll wait.
Yeah, I didn't think so.
That is complete hyperbole. Another 10 levels will not negate your old characters. If anything, the new Kit Revamp including an option to convert your old kit into one of the new ones indicates that tech is being developed to allow players to upgrade into the new systems as needed.
Second, Level cap raises are nothing new in MMOs. STO has had one already.
Yelling doom right now, when we have ZERO details says nothing. Yes, Crosby, Dorn and Russ gave voice overs. That's called planning ahead for when they decided to do this. Crosby's recording has to be over a year old by this point, just saying. This isn't neededly coming NOW.
But we have known this is coming for years (been discussed since 2011). Yelling doom isn't going to stop it. If anything, you're making the devs less receptive to feedback because you're making an off the hilt emotional reaction.

As has been said several times in the thread, a Level Cap increase does not mean there needs to be a ship Tier or gear Mark increase. A Level Cap increase can be additional Captain's Talents, additional Captain Class abilities, and additional Ship type abilities. As well as things like Fleet command: commanding your Boffs in other ships you have used.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
All the things that you say a level cap increase can accomplish (without new tiers of gear), can be accomplished without a level cap increase.
Make no mistake, a level cap increase will come with increased mark tiers. It is my hope that when it comes, they change all of the top tier rep and fleet TRIBBLE to auto-leveling gear.
All the things that you say a level cap increase can accomplish (without new tiers of gear), can be accomplished without a level cap increase.
A Level Cap increase gives you defined points as to when to add new abilities though: Level 51, new Captain Talent. Level 52, 1 Boff can serve under your Fleet. Level 53, new Captain Ability: Picard Maneuver. Level 54, 2 Boffs can sever under your Fleet, etc.

Even if this game without all the leveling to 50 or 60, it still playable.:). I play because to get items, storyline, even a simple pve event a day will do.
What is the point if to level 100, new players will not want to get this game since there are many new mmo games out there also to do the same.(the chinese and korean mmo games even more still)
I actually hope there is a way to play pve events on to phone, simple and easy even it just 15-20 mins of gameplay.:)

a. All you state can be done without level cap increase just as easy. It actually has been done several times with the reps.
b. Level cap increase does make even less sense without higher tier equipment
For the "promote BO to captain other ships".
I don't like it. Doing EVERYTHING with a 5 ship NPC team would remove even more star trek feel from this game.
I want to play "as bo" on gound, but I want to stick to one ship at a time, not move around in fleets.
If they made it so that MKXII purple gear were to level with you to a certain point, like some other gear in the game does, I wouldn't mind having the extra levels, and see what new skills they would add.
However, I also see other's side of this. They spent so much to get the best gear, and to have that made old school gear would suck. Even though I wouldn't have this problem, because I don't do open PVPs, I can see how it can hurt those that have PVP builds.
I know others like myself that don't bother outfitting other characters with top end gear, because they don't need it, since they don't PVP. Still, some of them might not like it.
I am leaning towards wanting it, just because it think it would be fun. I am looking forward to seeing what they will do.
Already, if the info that was leaked on the Tribble forums about the new rep system is any indication, a lot of players in PVP will find that some of their builds will not do as good as what they have been. I am sure they will still kick butt though.
Tim.
Leader of Elite Guardian Academy.Would you like to learn how to run a fleet? Would you like to know how to do ship builds (true budget as well as high end)? The join the Academy today!
Would it be easier just to remove the level cap from the game and make all ranks based off completion of X amount of content and time spent playing?
Removing basic game mechanics like the level system is probably not "easier" in any way shape or form. Doing something like that from the very beginning might have been easier. But this far past launch, taking out something that basic will probably mess with too much of how the game works to consider it.

Yeah, that would have been a good way to design a game from the beginning, but that isn't something you do 4 years later.
There are specific reasons a company does a level cap increase. Mainly it forces players to re-grind new gear which keeps them in game longer. Could they simply add more types of 50 gear? Sure, but would that entice everyone to grind for it? Nope, you'll get a lot of "Why should I when I can simply use X".
A level cap increase if done right is actually a good revenue source for Cryptic and will almost definitely be seen in the future. All that I can hope for is if they do add T6 ships it comes with a unique upgrade and not just another console.
Also not a post done by the OP but a response post about 50 already being easy and that cryptic should upgrade the difficulty...gawd so sick of posts like that...50 was not designed for the current end game/fully geared players...Of course full rep/elite fleet T5 ship pilots are finding it easy...The same way if I ran a end game dungeon in a basic mmorpg after fully gearing my char would become a lot easier then if I was a fresh max level, which is what the current 50 content is intended for...Fresh 50's. Its hard for Cryptic to add new content thats challenging to fully geared players while being access-able to newer players which is actually why a cap increase is a good idea.
I do not support a level cap increase, but it seems to be in the pipeline and I can live with it if it are only ten levels. Given the leveling speed in this game It will practilly mean something of two to four hours gameplay. They can change that of course fast to 50, slow to 60, but that would not be attractive, wearing the player out before endgame grind.
People defend it, a level cap increase, by saying it is the standard thing to do, all games do it one way or another. Well that doesn't mean it is a good thing or even the right thing to do. WoW's new expansion comes with a cap increase but it also comes with an instant almost level cap boost; you can buy the levels 1 to 90. Other games have similar features. A proof that the cap increase system is not working in the long run. If going to 60 is good, than it is necessary. It is natural progress. But then we have to go to 70, 80 etc. Perhaps we can buy here levels too at that point. What is the point of having a free to play game if you have to show money to play the interesting part of the game?
Another thing. I have bought ships. Most of you have. I am not going to buy new ones or upgrades or grind for free ships if I know that they become obsolete again. I might stick by a favourite one and will forget about the rest. This is also the case with your personal gear. A cap increase is not so attractive for this game.
It really depends on how they are going to implement the level cap increase.
- Just new MK XIII/XIV gear? Not really enough as an incentive to keep me playing STO. I'm already getting bored.
- New gear AND a new tier of ships that make all others obsolete? This would be a definite reason for me to quit STO. They are already approaching this option (I'm looking at you FAW Scimitard!) and I'm not happy with it.
- MK XIII/ XIV gear and new vast variety of challenging end game missions? This would be my favourite solution. I don't mind the grind as long as they provide a challenge for me to actually use all the new gear. The current endgame is already way to easy and is more in need of a rework/new additions than anything else (in PvE only, of course. Don't get me started on PvP).
