So I've been wanting to build out a canon build for my Fleet Tactical Escort.
Right now I'm running the typical DHC/Turrets for DPS, but I wanted to try something different.
(plus when I asked in STB channel, it was made clear that rear torpedoes were required for group runs, regardless of my hatred of rear torpedoes)
I'm trying to save a little money by reusing as much of my regular build as I can, so the first build is much more appealing to me than the second, though the second is closer to what I've read in my DS9 Technical Manual.
What are your thoughts, fellow Battlers?
Greetings Captain,
Well if the first is more better financially then I'd say go for it, for the 2nd one if you want to go canon do so when you have the EC.
Personally I prefer your alternate idea. The first one would be fine to use IMO, but the second would look more screen accurate, outside of the DBB.
I went with the DBB since the Defiant-class has three beam emitters: one forward, one aft, and one center behind the bridge. I figure the DBB would look more 'correct' based on the few scenes of the Defiant firing phaser beams in the show generally have beams going forward.
Yeah, aft torps are one of the few rules here besides faction weaponry and not melting things in seconds.
I think an array would look better, but if you want to use the DBB, go for it. Personally, I don't even run beams fore on my Defiant currently because I like the look of it just firing phaser cannons better. Some people were discussing use the new 360 omni-phasers on it a few days ago -- sounds like a pretty good option to me if you really want to have three beams on it, something to consider.

I do too (same reason I use TS instead of HYT), but I figured since the specs demand beams, I'd have to run beams.
Some people were discussing use the new 360 omni-phasers on it a few days ago -- sounds like a pretty good option to me if you really want to have three beams on it, something to consider.
When I can afford one, I might do that. I'm currently leveling crafting on eight different characters using four 20-hour cooldowns, so eventually one of them will hit L15 for Beams and then I'll see about crafting one for myself.
I could probably throw some Dyson marks at a Gravimetric Photon Launcher, which wouldn't really cost me anything. I already have a DBB, a Beam Array and some Quantum launchers...
This would give me beams and torpedoes as I'm passing the target, but only cannons and torpedoes as I'm on approach... might look more screen-accurate, since I don't ever recall the Defiant firing cannons AND beams on an attack run...
Even previous games like ST Bridge Commander and ST Starfleet Command had all their ships outfitted with rear torps. When you also use the internet as reference the ships had torps on the aft.
By doing this it brings a ST feel and strategy to flying your ship.
It most certainly does! Actually, I've been planning to officially join STB and slowly ... slowly gathering the bits I want to use for my dear Excelsior.
On the chance I get to use a Light Cruiser, is the Centaur considered a canon ship?
I might change my Defiant to something like that. I try to avoid making another Torpedo Boat, as most of my STB builds are that for the looks.
Currently I am using DHC, Wide Angle Quantum, 2x Beams fore and 2x Beams plus Quantum or Photon aft.
Essentialy broadsiding with FAW and using CRF + TS for attack runs. But that's a LOT of beams firing...
For the aft slot I was also thinking about the cloaking mines you get from the romulan story arc. Since you don't like aft torpedoes that might be something for you. Sure, we never saw the Defiant use mines in battles, but it used cloaking mines to mine the wormhole, so at least situationally it makes sense.
With the changes to Beam Overload you could use that with your aft beams after the pass to give them more punch.
I really want to try the 360 beam array though. Guess I'll get the free Antiproton one to see from which hardpoints it fires.
It most certainly does! Actually, I've been planning to officially join STB and slowly ... slowly gathering the bits I want to use for my dear Excelsior.

Centaur? Of course! We didn't do low Tier runs for a while!
If you need anything to outfit your Excelsior feel free to ask in the STB channel or drop me a mail to Bank@Tyrinius. That's what STB Fleet's Bank is there for.
Edit: Just a reminder to everyone: It is not necessary to have a STB ship ready to join the channel. We regularly do the first runs with new members in the ships they used so far. Then we help get the gear, build ready to fit STB rules.
That way you can also see how things work here without spending anything beforehand. Means you can try it out and leave again, if you don't like it. But trust me, you won't leave
I just had the most amazingly empty experience doing an STF run where DPS was king and no teamwork was needed or apparently wanted. After reading through this thread I would love to go back to the days when the best way to win an STF was to use teamwork instead of "PEW PEW PEW done leave". My Andorian engineer has an Excelsior that is just begging to taste combat again

Cryptic: If you think the bugs are bad, wait until you see our fixes!
I wasn't sure what the Excelsior came with when you asked last night -- I'd just stick to the default weapon layout (2 phaser arrays and 2 torps each end), but maybe try moving the second array to the rightmost slot for looks if the beams are firing too close together. Alternatively you could try running a single array each end, which looks more like it would fire on screen but doesn't exactly work great with cruiser gameplay IMO.
You can swap the photons for quantums if you want since they were already refitting ships with them before the Dominion War.
Thank you for the input! After the run we did tonight I went ahead and swapped out her photon torps for quantums. That should give her just the right amount of "oomph"

Good day Captain,
I hope you had fun
I still use the photons on say the Galaxy as the aft torpedos with quantums at front as I still do love the photon sounds.
You would think they would've upgraded the torps they fire... well also you would think they would upgrade the Galaxy class but that's another thread ahahhaah.
It most certainly does! Actually, I've been planning to officially join STB and slowly ... slowly gathering the bits I want to use for my dear Excelsior.
On the chance I get to use a Light Cruiser, is the Centaur considered a canon ship?
Although it's been a long time since I have been active in STB, I would like to respond to Cmdrscarlet.
I have seen your posts and consider you one of the voices of reason in the STO forums. The Excelsior is my favorite ship as well. It doesn't look like a princess ship like some of the others. Although, I like taking the Gal-R once in a while too.
Regarding your loadout, I wouldn't worry about the exact gear that you use, as long as it's canon at its core (Front and back: Phasers, Photons and/or Quantums... and whatever else could be canon,) and you keep your DPS down, what is it that we agreed to? 8K?
So Fleet Phaser Beam Arrays, etc, should be ok, just keep the DPS down. It might be as easy as lowering your weapon power or dropping a tactical console or two.
Hope that helps.
PS: It's lonely out here PUGing it, but I signon so late. I gotta hook-up with you guys again soon.

I know late is relative, but from my experience, there are always people on the channel. Maybe not chatting actively, but if you say something, you'll usually get a few responses. Don't be afraid to take a couple STB builds into PUGs. Our average DPS tends to be...above average for a PUG, heh. You won't be holding anyone back, trust me.

Captain,
Thought I'd share another vid I like to watch.. has some really good ST moments.
I haven't seen that one before. I've seen other versions of it though, and I think that they are superior, personally.
Regarding getting runs organised, half of the time I come on I don't get to do a run. I guess I just come on at awkward times though, and there doesn't seem to be many people from over here in the channel. Still, when I come on in t he late evening/ middle of the night, I get to join runs very easily.
Hello everyone, I'm interested in joining this channel, to give some fresh air to my Defiant. However I'd like to have some questions answered firsts if you don't mind
Are cloak-capable ships like Defiant allowed to perform a vape maneuver? I mean, I'm a huge fan of DS9, and I quite often saw the Defiant popping out of cloak and destroying Jem'Hadar ships in a blast. I know, that would surely exceed the 8k cap limit, however it would be a spike for a few seconds. Of course using Quantum Torpedoes in the build. (I can see a Dual Quantum launcher someday from Cryptic...).
Do you organize battles for lower ranking ships? Like NXs, Connies etc.
Does STB include PvP with the members sometimes? Or it is limited to PvE scenarios?

Yes. I frequently do it to Jem'Hadar Attack Ships and Nicor Bioships. And you would be surprised that it doesn't exceed the established 8k limit. I tend to run right around 6.5/6.6k in my Defiant when up against Undine. Against Borg, I lower my weapons power a little bit so I am not insta-vaping the Spheres/Probes.
Do you organize battles for lower ranking ships? Like NXs, Connies etc.
We frequently have lower Tier Vessel Runs, even if the STF is an elite. We also do themed/specific ship-style runs (TOS, TNG/DS9/Voy, Risan, Galaxy) every now and then.
Does STB include PvP with the members sometimes? Or it is limited to PvE scenarios?
It is not limited to just PvE, but we tend to do more of that than PvP. When we do PvP, we usually try to center it around a certain objective or recreation. The latest one that I think is still happening every now and then is 5 Tier 3 Ships against 1 Maxed out build (Defending against a Raider). Certain ground rules are created before the start of the event, then modified either in game or before the next match.
I may try to do another DS9: Dominion War recreation, but I will be working on the rules quite a bit.

Star Trek Battles: For those who want to Play Star Trek Online as it WAS MEANT TO BE!!!
Hey - a few answers for you - one I'm going to leave hanging....
Low tier ships - Yes, we've done low tier runs from time to time, very fun to brush the dust off older gear and still be able to beat queued missions.
PVP - There have been a few PVP events - there was one with Dominion-war Alpha-Quadrant vs. Dominion, and another where low tier ships would take on a large ship (ie Scimitar, other huge ship). They aren't very often though.
As to the vaping - I'll leave that for someone else to weigh in on. I consider myself pretty casual on the channel, and wouldn't want to speak for anyone. I and others have used the Gal-X's lance though, and no one complains.
Really, for the low-tier stuff and teamwork alone, I'd strongly consider joining up. The channel's drama free, and a breath of fresh air in comparison to pugging.

Thank you for your interest in STB.
I see RS has already answered your questions but Ill throw my EC's in as well.
If you use the guides in the 1st page you should be able to hit the sweet spot as there is more than a couple of ways to adjust DPS and we have admins such as RS who can parse. The spike damage it not a problem, what we are trying to do is extend the matches a bit and focus on team work as well as NOT finish ISE in 3 mins. The cap is more like 7k but even then seeing that in STB matches it goes quicker, you will be able to get a feel once you start flyn with STB Captains.
Yes we do themed runs here and there, it's been a while so I was thinking of taking que of a recent Captain who joined STB to take my Connie out as well.
As mentioned we do have special PvP battles that aim to recreate things we've seen in ST or even just to try something different. I've said this before and I'll say it again, PvP is NOT my thing but I have enjoyed it more here in STB as it's been pretty much drama free.... you win great you lost np.
I will be hoping in game after this so if an invite hasn't been sent yet Ill send one your way.
Thank you and I look forward to meeting you in game Captain :)7
I'd love to join in on this though I have some questions. I've got a Fed character I'm aiming to set up with a Narcine carrier or else a Fleet Caitian carrier. Are either of these acceptable? I'd also like to know if Tricobalt Devices are acceptable as well; Voyager does use them but I'd like something with a bit more kick than Photon or Quantum torpedoes. And lastly, what kind of fighters are allowed? There's 75 pages of thread; I didn't want to have to sift through all of it.
Yes, I am horribly lazy.
But please, do add me to the list, and once I get Narine to 50 I'll be happy to join in. Thank you!
Outside of themed runs, you're allowed to fly whatever you want. Most of what we do aren't themed runs, those are an occasional impromptu thing when we already know we have people on with ships that meet the theme.
For torps, I personally think any weapon that's used by an NPC ship or comes preequipped on a ship in STO is fair game. I build my ships as if it were 2410 outside of themed runs. Tricobalts are fine for Federation ships. Loading specialty torps (anti-borg transphasic or bio-molecular for example) is fine when you're fighting that enemy.
Fighters, I don't think we've ever set any rules about but personally I wouldn't use anything that isn't specific to that faction, maybe even race. Stalker fighters being launched by anything except the Atrox just wouldn't look right to me, personally.
And don't worry about being level 50 before joining, plenty of us like running story missions and will help you level or will run the pre-50 PVEs like Fleet Alerts with you.
