Well, we can start with Hobus and the Supernova - which leads directly into the Iconian storyline that permeates all of STO. So a huge chunk of what STO is all about comes directly from JJ's actions.
That might not be what JJ intended, but Cryptic took what he gave the canon and ran with it.
