I haven't seen into Darkness, but in Wrath Khan's defense, he had been marooned on a planet for fifteen years watched all his family and friends including his wife die out on him with only a few books with strong revenge themes there to help his mind stay intact. It failed. I would think though considering he came to rule a third of the globe, that Warth's Khan WAS Into Darkness' Khan before he lost his mind.
Benedict Cumberbath has a Reddit-based cult of personality around him. He plays roughly one character: cold growling "oh so badass" sociopath. He's a one trick pony.
But I think since Heath Ledger's Joker made the old "super evil genius that doesn't care" troupe so popular and scriptwriters everywhere started farming the idea, stuff like the "cold calculating badass" is everywhere and apparently a lot of people aren't bored of it yet.

If one person does it that's somewhat entertaining. It's the depressing me-too drones that repeat it and keep it going.
It's like those never-funny people that hear a joke, immediately repeat it to the same audience, and expect the same response.
This is pretty much typical of the major updates where their under powered servers die a horrible twisting death. This being due to everyone including those who have bailed on the game to come back just long enough to check out the new content and grab a few freebies.
Invest in more memory and band width cryptic it will save you this heart ache every time you do a new season!

Sorry but the story writing for Into Darkness was bad. Still a fun movie, but really bad plot.
