These giveaways are going to be a major disappointment. They're giving away items that don't sell or that are low performers. If anyone thought Cryptic was going to give away anything good, then it's going to be a major disappointment for everyone.

I dunno, I use the Marauder FDC that was given away in the last round of giveaways, and the free shuttles (Yellowstone/To'Duj). Just because they're not giving away the best items doesn't mean the giveaways aren't at least entertaining to play with a bit.

Of course. Dont expect cryptic to give away a ship that cost 2500 zen. Thats impossible. But as i noticed, that is what people are expecting lol.

But i am aware of cryptic way of work, so im not surprised. I am dissapointed with them since i started playing STO xd, but at least they give something free, even if it is a total waste. When they are not giving anything and no events are going on, everybody is happy. When they announce an event and they give free items, everybody is complaining about the quality of the items. I dont get it. Just imagine there is no event at all, and you getting a free item (imagine it is just another bug in the game lol).

    Only to some people.

    So far.
If anyone thought Cryptic was going to give away anything good, then it's going to be a major disappointment for everyone.
Wait, so if 1 person (anyone) thought it was going to be something it was not then every other person (everyone) is going to be disappointed? How does that work?

I'm not disappointed. Surprised, certainly, I had a thought it would be the old IDIC tribble (which many already had) for day 1. So I disprove your theory about everyone being disappointed just because you may have thought it was going to be a scimitar 3-pack, or some such.
At least this time the first giveaway item can be used be FED, KDF AND ROM.

That's mostly Cryptic's fault for including images of a Starship in their Free Giveaway banner they posted the other day. Just what did they think everyone was going to assume on that?

I've liked the givaways. The Nebula was nice, although I quickly upgraded to the fleet version (for only $5). I hadn't thought of giving my hortas to my Boffs, but I'll be doing so for all my characters. The battlezone's going to get crowded. (And running my Orion through Mine Enemy again to raise her pup.)
I think that the problem with the giveaways is that people keep expecting Cryptic to give away really awesome stuff. That ain't gonna happen. The stuff that they are giving away's still kinda nice, though, and stuff I probably wouldn't have spent money on.

Spoiled, entitled children. That's the long and short of it.

I, for one, am grateful for my free horta pet, and claimed it on all 8 of my toons.

Well, I don't use the Marauder (just doesn't fit my playstyle on any of my characters right now, though I've considered figuring out a build for my human pirate character), have had very little combat to use the To'Duj in, but I use the Yellowstone's engine on all my fedside combat shuttles. Which also haven't seen a lot of action since the giveaway.

I am however a frequent user of the Photonic Displacer (great prelude to a full-blown cloaking device, with none of the disadvantages of the real thing) and (when I take that human I mentioned above) Barrier Field Generator. Very handy consoles in the right hands.

There is no "gesture", it's a promotion. Stop treating the companies as if this was some altruistic move to please the fans ;)

That doesn't mean one has to complain or anything.

    Speak for yourself. :P

I, for one, claimed the Horta - it's just that I feel it's going to serve the same purpose all of the testing reward tribbles do - clog up the inventory.

Well, at least it's not going to make any less useful copies of itself from any food I may have lying around in the inventory... :D

Edit: Since I just realized my post is a bit... jumbled, to say the least, I'll clarify:

I appreciate the fact that they are giving us something to begin with, and I was quite satisfied by all of the stuff received until today, even the stuff I never used (TOS tunic, I'm looking at you... :)) - but the Horta's barely any better than a tribble, and simply not worth giving out. That is, it's worth giving out - but not in this manner, and it doesn't deserve to be in the C-Store in the first place.

Sorry if I'm still not making any sense, I think this is an exceptionally messy post compared to most of the other posts I make on these and other forums. :o

Ok, so here's how it went for me:

Cryptic: "We're giving away free stuff that you can claim if you have an appropriate character."

Me:  "... Oh sh... New ships and bridge packs and they're probably going to be high level-and-I-need-tolevelupacharacterrightNOOOW!" *ploughs into levelling up a new char, three days later, still has no sleep*

Cryptic: "Have a Horta that any faction character can claim." :D

Me: "... I don't even... I just don't... I don't know anymore..." :( *collapses into sleep on the keyboard, wakes up 12 hrs later* "That was all a bad dream, right?" *checks* "... Oh..."

So, in short, there are going to be other giveaways, right?

Well I must say, I've found the crafted combat Horta to be very useful in numerous circumstances, so being able to dual wield them will be very handy.

You actually can dual wield the Hortas?

Okay, that could be handy. Sort of a poor man's Security Escort. :)

Bridge packs aren't high level. As for ships... if you have 1 lvl 50 character of each faction, it's not much of a problem. My younger brother, however, had to rush to 40 for the Marauder last year. Turned out he didn't like it.

But yeah, two more giveaways - one today, one tomorrow. Also, you're bound to see more eventually.

Tried it last night. It was out of combat, but the cooldown on the second horta was only about a minute, so provided your first horta can last that long (he doesn't out of combat), you should be able to. I didn't have time to check if the first horta would beam out when the second one was called though. Thinking about it, that does happen with non combat pets. But perhaps giving the second horta to one of your boffs, since your turrets dont dissapear when they create their own turrets could give the dual wielding horta effect?

    Definately something worth looking into.

I have to agree that these hortas are going to do nothing more than clog up our inventory. I don't even use them and just dump them into my boffs device slots. What's next? A horta that gives you free advice?

I don't consider it a major disappointment, there's nothing compelling them to give away stuff for free in the first place, and, as you point out, this is stuff that most likely isn't selling in the first place.

It's like the factional environment suits. The stats on them aren't impressive, and at... what was it, 700 zen? Cost way too much, so eventually they opt to give them away as 500-day veteran rewards (IIRC). They didn't have to do that either.
