Just wondering why the amount of uber serious people I have been bumping into in-game has been drastically increasing lately?
Lemme be more specific. I play STO because its Star Trek. Granted its a very odd Star Trek but Trek none the less. My play style is fully committed to running ONLY fed ships and fed canon equipment. Also I am definitely interested in doing my fair share in fleet STFs. At the same time, its just a game and I'm not gonna go all crazy over what is essentially, fantasy. My fleet mates have no problem with this thankfully but I am getting a little tired of all the flak from pugs in STFs. Besides, I seem to be one of the few people that actually volunteer for probe duty and my ship can definitely handle them on its own. Seems like every time I turn around I am in a Khit where some other player insists on constantly coming over and "helping" with the probes (which isn't so bad) then getting all fussy about how I supposedly ain't killing them fast enough.
Honestly its beginning to kill the feel of the game for me. I already only have a precious few hours a day I can spend running STO because of my work schedule. I don't need some uber insane min/maxer trying to lecture me every time I turn around.
Well ... it's their problem. Allowing them to get to you is your problem. If you know you are pulling your weight in a group, then brush it off. One very important fact is that you are going into a PUG - those are usually a mixed bag of fun or insanity. That's right ... "or".
Ultimately, you are right: its just a game. Someone else is making it more than that.
My recommendation is to assume they're Tellarites and just keep doing your thing.
Keep in mind that most times people don't have anyone on "probe duty" instead people whack the probes then go work on the gates, and no one is sitting around waiting for the next wave to spawn. And some people are in so much of a rush they feel that having someone who only shoots the probes is slowing down their farming.
Not saying they're right, just that's an attitude that's common now.
ignore the noobs and their whining bullcrap.. Those idiots can kill enjoyment faster than anything else in existence. Topping that, none of therm know how to work as a team.. All they know id optional's..
There are fortunately some really good players i run into a lot in the estf's. We knock out ICE in maybe four minutes at most, and KASe takes just a wee bit longer. Its not because anyone is overpowered, its because they are very very good. these other guys?? They're just there and either learning or being brain dead.. You can only ignore them and go on..
This is the major reason I basically stopped doing STFs and the like and just focus on having fun on my own and making things go kaboom.

Wow... usually no one volunteers when I'm in a Kit space, and I usually end up handling Probes on one side anyways. I actually got chewed out for not doing more when I was on Probe Duty, such as attacking generators.
Excuse me for focusing on trying to keep the optional.
Just take the "leet" players with a grain of salt. There are just as many good players who will offer advice as there are people who feel it necessary to berate others when things don't go according to their unshared plan.
I can't take it anymore! Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something CRAZY happens again?!

You hit the nail on the head sir.. They are all about farming, and nothing else.. Well, perhaps playing the lone frikkin hero taking everything on that they can and messing it up for the other four people in the room..
As you and i both said, ignore them. They arent playing any real game and if they are, it isnt star trek..

That's their problem, not yours.
STO is an extremely easy game to play. I've said it many times before, and I'll say it again. There's very little challenge in the game itself. Even Elite STFs aren't all that challenging compared to other games. This isn't a bad thing, mind you. Because this game is a Star Trek game first and everything else second.
But some people feel they have to min-max everything to be good. And the truth is you don't. I might have the best of everything, but it's simply because I can afford it or I wanted the challenge of trying to earn it. It's not because I think it makes me better. I have purple Mk XII phaser relays in my tactical slots, but by no means do I think I'll be a bad player if I don't use them. To the contrary, I'm fully aware that Blue Mk XI's work just as well.
These people you describe either don't understand or don't care that the game is easy to play. If you are pulling your weight in an STF, then why do they care? If you are getting the optional, if you are winning the STF... why do they care?
You are getting the job done. You are getting your rewards. There's no reward for killing things .07 seconds faster than everyone else. You don't get brownie points for min-maxing when the end reward is the same for everyone.
Now maybe if we're talking No Win Scenario or whatnot, that's a little bit different since it is the most challenging thing in the game. But when it comes to STFs... your fleetmates are needlessly anal retentive busybodies, sorry.

I have three ships specifically built to do probes ( one for each character ). Its my favorite position in KASe.. Its active, more challenging as the scenario goes on and requires more skill than just sitting there in grimjack blasting away at a generator.. Grimjack can easily take out anything bigger than a breadbox in there, but, wheres the fun in that??
Why so unserious? Its Trek and is supposed to attract the more intelligent, thoughtful people. Moreover whats wrong expecting things like basic manners, maturity, and even a little professional courtesy from your fellow players, especially in an adults-only game? Instead half the chat channels or threads on this board are overly aggressive, pointless snark, and puerile idiocy reminiscent of junior high school. Certainly nobody is perfect and sometimes a situation really demands appropriate sarcasm or forcefulness, or sometimes simply shows poor judgement when they should know better. The guy giving you a hard time in KSE unnecessarily needs to either dial back the competitiveness or pick better phrasing, offering assistance instead of insulting for example. But generally speaking we're all adults here, so whats so bad about expecting others to act as such?

Pfft.. I havent been able to build a ship thats capable of getting past level six in NWS yet.. now THATS an elite STF.. My hat is off to anyone that can do it..

What i dont understand is how some of these people have time to type in any of the estf's. I may be old and slow, but jesus.. I have my hands full in those things. I figure there are four other people in there depending on me to do my job and that doesnt leave me a lot of time for typing out snarky comments and insults.. I just dont get it..

I can modify the Lexington (Assault Cruiser Refit) by swapping out my rear Torpedo for mines and a BOff with a Dispersal Pattern, then gas out the probes all day with Warp Plasma before shredding them with my Phased Tetryon beam arrays. Heck... I could also use Metreon Gas or Theta Radiation as well. Some days my fleet mates and I joke about me renamimg my ship to USS Gasious Anomaly.
The USS Caliburn (Advanced Escort) and RRW Mogwai (Fleet Mogai Retro)... Can just park there and Scatter Volley them to oblivion.
The USS Avalon... now she's a little more fun on Probe Duty. Vesta class with two Tractor Repulsors, a Grav Well, Isometric Charge... hehe...

True, but that doesn't mean we should lower our standards, for them or for ourselves. We can accept idiocracy or we can try to better than that.

Oh don't get me wrong I'm not defending someone being rude to teammates during a mission. At best swap with someone "I got this" and then talk later "Hey you know that area you were having trouble with? I can think of a few simple tricks you can add to make it easier for next time, wouldn't require you revamp your ship or anything." And if the response is "no thanks," thats their call no worries, and if they tell me what I can go do with myself, I was just trying to be nice and helpful and its their problem now.
Actually, I wish I can team with the OP a few times. I'm more sick of people who have the ability to do "probe duty" but refuse and I have to cover there in my ship that is not made for probe duty since I can't put cannons on it.

but back to present.. I prefer small heavily armed ships for probes.. the risan corvette, the Miranda, the tactical warbird, all of those are perfect for probes and a hell of a lot of fun..
I actually got chewed out for not doing more when I was on Probe Duty, such as attacking generators.
Excuse me for focusing on trying to keep the optional.
Probably by me. Probe duty is 80% AFK 20% easy pickings. There is a time limit on the optional so sitting idle 80% of the time waiting for probes to spawn is not helping, especially when 2 players are doing it, one on each side. There are 2 generators in range where most players park, it wouldn't be hard at all to at least destroy 1 of them. But this is a mute point these days, as most PuGs get at least 1 Aux2Bat FAW DPS maxer and time is not often an issue.

Maybe I should have gotten a corvette and called it the Chupathingy.
I got one on my Romulan and called it the Wolfos. Still tweaking the build on her.

Ok, dude, look: Probes come through two at a time while the first generator is up. Once the first generator goes down they come through three and four at a time. Once the second generator is down they come through five at a time and bring their sphere buddies with them. I dont know where you were told what you were told, but probes are a full time crazy assed position to work. I personally could care less about optionals btw.. They arent the point of the estf for me..
I see two possibilities. First, they've temporarily stopped doing what they're supposed to do to rant. Second, they've figured out how to use autofire.
To think cryptic wanted to ban automation, autofire makes me laugh.
I do believe your correct as ive come pretty much to the same conclusions myself.. Sadly, when ive been able to get these people between myself and my target, my weapons never seem to effect them. Gods know ive tried though.. time and time again..

The guy I quoted said he was working for the optionals. I don't complain when a player is active. I complain when they volunteer for probe duty and sit idle 80% of the time as many do, getting killed when the spheres spawn and still letting probes through the gate. If they can't do it why volunteer? There is a normal difficulty level.
I usually take probe duty on the right side myself. I enjoy the challenge of trying to destroy 4 generators, a transformer, a cube, and killing probes. But my ship is well suited for the role with gravity well 1, cannon scatter volley 1, torpedo spread 3, attack pattern beta 3.
(PS) If you fly a Scimitar (your signature picture) then you also have pets to help, the default drones or danubes with tractor beams can help a lot.
Agreed. Which is one of many reasons I still play the game.
Ive actually stopped playing the game.. It died a horrible death for me, but i have friends i would miss incredibly if i were to leave, so you'll always see me and my grimjack on there somewhere as i want to be with them.. I'll go into estfs and blow **** up, run misshes and blow **** up, hang around Esd and watch others blow **** up.. But really, i'm just there for the peoplei i enjoy being around..

Your my counterpart. I'm always more comfortable ( and effective ) on the left.. And I do understand.. my apologies for jumping your post out of context..
Yeahhh, I fly a sim, but i'm weird. I feel that if i have to use my drones, or call the pirates, or go invisible, i'm doing something very wrong. I dislike using them I guess i figure thats what a team is for. We all work together and cover each other.. When i'm in Grimjack though, i dont do probes. its a battleship and has a different priority like generators and gates. And really, its no fun just siting there in that big boat just frting on probes as they come through the gate.. Thats why i prefer smaller more maneuverable craft in that position. its more challenging and a lot more fun..
heh, both??
Look, I'm there for my friends thats true, but they have in game objectives and goals. I cant be expecting them to sit there holding my lonesome lil hand while we chat for hours on end, so, while they're off chasing their goals, i'll pop into an estf or two to pass the time.. Oh dont worry, I put everything ive got into those estf's. I'm no slacker, but the game itself is pretty much dead to me..
