I do know one thing. The devs better not give the map(s) any day/night cycles.
If a Dyson Sphere (theoretically) worked how it was suppose too, you'd never have night time. It's focused around a Sun, and all sides of the inside are always in contact with it. Eternal Light.
Has anyone else figured out what this whole Dyson Sphere boils down to if it involves the Voth?
I would imagine we'd be fighting the Voth for the technology within the Sphere. I doubt very much the Voth created it. The Voth are advanced, sure, but that advanced? I think not!
Why not? Dyson spheres potentially have some system to create night.
How? If there is a Sun at the center, and everything on the outside (or inside, depending how you look at it) is in direct with the center of the Sphere, how could there be night?
I mean the Voth City ship is ohhhhh 11km long and Doug Drexler said the Enterprise-J is said to be 2 miles long (3.2km long). Don't tell me you want to blow her up.........in size bigger than that?
I think the problem with the J is that some people will be wanting to fly her, and lets be practical here, that just wouldn't be ... practical.
A stationary object that you'd board and fight on? Sure. An object that you fight or fly? I'm not liking the idea (though I can't think of a reason we'd need to fight the Ent-J).
i want one!!!! i will pay 100$ to 200$ for it so cryptic 6 words!!! hek even do like eveonline like they do for big ships and only allow them to go places you make for them maybe something like deep space sector maps i could picture pvp with ships like this in sto man it would be fun to take out player capital ships!!!!!!
I don't think that's a City Ship. It's too small. Surely?
No, judging from my starship size comparison charts, it's about the right size. It's probably short a few kilometers, though; it's hard to tell at the angle as I can't see how far above it that Vesta class is.

I guess I thought the City Ship was bigger; being able to hold an Intrepid Class ship inside with room to spare and all. The Vesta isn't that much bigger than the Intrepid, is it?

Actually it is. The Vesta is the size of a Galaxy or a Sovereign while the Intrepid is the size of a Constitution.

Is it? The most common variant here is a forcefield that blocks the sunlight for a day/night cycle.

Night is created by massive orbital satellites that eclipse the ground, creating nighttime.

Nobody is talking about making her playable, but a ship we actually encounter and interact.
Besides, there is no way people would tolerate flying that ship. Romulan ships are already a handful with the clipping. And the Turn Radius of the Enterprise-J has to be worse than the Odyssey and Vo'Quv. So nobody in their right mind would want to fly it.

Stationary Target? Fighting the Enterprise J? WTF are you blabbering on about?
For years (even before STO Beta), I wanted the Enterprise-J in the game so we can actually participate in the Battle of Procyon V. Why? Because in ENT: Azati Prime, when Archer was transported into the 26th Century where the Battle of Procyon V Takes place, we saw 24th Century Starships fighting in the battle. We saw a Vor'cha, a Prometheus, a Nova, and a Dauntless in that brief instant.
In Trek Canon, those ships are likely ships still in service after 200 years. But in STO canon, it's not impossible for us to be transported into the future and those ships are us in the future, assisting the Enterprise J in the Battle.
So Cryptic can have the Enterprise J without making her a playable ship. And those who are fans would be happy to be part of the action.

That is a bit of an understatement. I think a turn rate of 0.1 would be appropriate. So it would take 30 minutes to turn around.
i though luna or excell size.... but sov sized?
wow... either no excuse for the turn stats they give the sov, or no excuse for the stats they gave the vesta...
*Shrug.* I really don't know what to say. The Sovereign is a bit bulkier than Vesta's sleek design, so that might have something to do with it. Also the Vesta's more of a science ship... the Sovereign has a higher hull strength.
Then there's the Galaxy's turn rate of 6 and inertia of 20 which is shorter than the the both of them at 642 meters, but has more bulky mass than both, if you want to bring size into it.

For what it's worth, I'd like a Procyon V episode (or mini series) where we travel to the future and help in that battle. I just want want, nor would I ever want, a bunch of people flying around in that ship (Ent-J).
If, in a future episode we travel to the future and see the Enterprise-J, that's fine with me. I just don't want it to be playable.
We saw a Vor'cha, a Prometheus, a Nova, and a Dauntless in that brief instant.
Hah, lets be honest here, we saw them only cause the creative team for the episode got lazy. I can't honestly see those designs still being used in the 26th Century, not unless Starfleet was very desperate.
Edit: Just been looking over at Ex Astria Scientia and it's got the Voth City Ship at 9800m. If scaled correctly, the ship seen fighting the Vesta is too small.

Don't roll your eyes at me, buddy.
Dyson Sphere concepts have often included giant solar shields that orbit the inner sun, and create moving swathes of night on the interior of the sphere.

Exactly that :P If you have the materials/time/capacity to make a Dyson Sphere in the first place, you can certainly make technologies that stimulate artificial night/day, and other such things relatively easily
Was named Trek17.
Been playing STO since Open Beta, and have never regarded anything as worse than 'meh', if only due to personal standards.
Not to mention once you have it, your available energy is going to far exceed what you'll actually be able to use, so why not? Massive surplus of energy, and after the sphere's completion all the construction capacity that had to be built up will be left idle. No reason to skip the spinning rims at that point.
@ Tacofangs, (You are probably not allowed to answer any of these questions )
Just a few things I am curious about:
If you were in charge of naming it [the thing being discussed - from the images in blog#2], would you call it a Dyson Sphere or a Dyson Shell? (And really there is only one correct answer!).
The big grooves you see, I do not think you would be able to see them on something that big unless they were bloody enormous (bigger than a planet!). If it was up to you, would you make it completely smooth?
Also, why can we see it? It should be completely black, the sun being inside it,should make it difficult to see. (You know - no light / little light and all).
And finally, if it was totally up to you,
XINDI [including aquatic] or CHANGELING playable race?
Hopefully I'll come back from my break; this break is fun; I play intellectual games.
We don't want what the Feds have. We want the equivalent. We want fairer treatment. Concern, desire, greed to some extent, and passionate belief that the enough people would buy KDF items to make it worth Cryptic's while.

Whilst the concept and implementation is there, tell me, if you had the power and resources to create such an object, why would you even bother with a night time? What's wrong with an eternal, tropical paradise. You wouldn't need night. We have it cause of the way our planet orbits the sun, but in such the object that is a Dyson Sphere, it's a design chosen for implementation by the creators. Why bother?
All this speculation about the Voth, Iconains, Undine... and a Dyson Sphere.... I think I know what the new carrier is!
The new Carrier will likely be Voth in design. Carriers tend to be large (the Voth don't do things small), and we know the Voth are being worked on. To introduce a random alien Carrier out of nowhere would be ludicrous.

1. it was a joke...
2. Bran has said outright that the carrier was NOT Voth... though it wouldn't be the first time he, and by extension Cryptic, has lied to us...

I don't need to say anything here, although I feel inclined to do so. Everyone is speculating it's of Voth origin, so if it isn't, I truly don't see the logic of Bran lying about it. Voth is the next big thing here, so it stands to reason the Carrier would be Voth too.
To have an Elachi, Iconian or Undine Carrier (though the latter seems stupidly unlikely) would be a bit... random, and the main threat of season 8 is the Voth. Hmm...

It makes things biologically easier on both the resident population, as well as on their crops and livestock - many plants actually grow worse if they don't have a dark period, and most animals develop all sorts of stress related problems if kept in permanent light or dark. This extends to wildlife from the (presumably demolished) homeworld, where massive genetic reengineering couldn't be applied to force organisms to adapt to permanent day.

Maybe so, but on the Enterprise, they had artificial day/night cycles as well (except in case of emergencies). The simple answer is probably that we life-forms require some sort of regularity, something to help our body's time rhythms keep in order.
With a day/night cycle, the body is able to easily do so. Without one, well, efficiency might be all over the place
Plus as it was also noted, with all that excess energy, why not use it anyway?

If this were a Human creation, then fair enough (as we'd need all that is mentioned) but we don't know who built these spheres, nor do we know how much daylight / sunlight they'd need. That being said, humans and aliens alike can't do so bad without one, or the other. Crews on ships don't get the daily daylight that colonists on planets do, and they all run just fine.

Hah, it wont be no Call of Duty / Medal of Honor. It'll be your typical Ground I expect (too much of a ground revamp otherwise).
