The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.

    Me again.

Forgive me if this has already been said, but is it a good idea to patch a server that went down unexpectedly (the thread title says "under investigation")?

Or maybe it just says that but the real cause is something they're not going to admit to (janitor tripped over the plug because the production server is currently sitting in someone's cubicle - it happens). And they brought the server back up with no connectivity (dot stays red for us), ran their diagnostics, certified it, documented the failure, and then brought it back down again to perform the maintenance.

Because no one in their right mind would patch a server that had crashed and they'd not yet determined root cause. Right?

Here's the problem I have with your analogy: if your TV goes out repeatedly and you're still under warranty (whether it be the warranty that was included with the TV that you paid for or an extended warranty that you paid for), you do moan at your TV manufacturer. If your satellite dish stops working then you moan at your satellite provider (whose service - you guessed it - you paid for.)

The only way you can not hold Cryptic accountable (if you're paying them) is if your lack of connectivity is due to circumstances that aren't affecting the entire community. My stance on these outages used to be as simple as "I gave them money, I expect uptime" but this is uncharted territory for me (paying for something that I can also get for free, and having it break repeatedly on me). Things aren't so black-and-white for me now...but I will say that Cryptic is going to have to start treating this like a business if they have long-term plans for it. That means SDLC, change control, accountability, the whole nine. I think that the suits at Cryptic understand this (if they don't then Cryptic needs some new suits.)

Free-to-play or not - if you want your project to be anything more than a flash in the pan, you have to start looking at things differently when you start accepting payment from your customer base in any form. Call them (myself included, if this qualifies) whiners all you want, but perception is everything - and negative perception from paying customers ain't gonna keep the lights on.

And once again you're missing the original point, I'm saying you may be moaning at your TV manufacturer (Cryptic) for an issue caused by your satellite dish (someone else). It may be an issue that has nothing to do with Cryptic, we don't know for sure. I understand that you've paid for the game and expect to be able to play it but if they have no electricity going to their building (for example) you're moaning at them for something out of their control.

That would be understandable if it happened once in a while... but this is the fourth time in the past weeks they have no electricity? No way, sorry.
