I have 4 KDF characters. Two max ranked and two that are above Brig. Gen. The Klingon side is not difficult to level with. It has a distinct flavor over the Federation side. It has a more aggressive focus with the various attack missions. Starting out as the equivalent of ensign isn't needed. I feel it is complete. IT could always use some more polish but it is a functioning faction. Just let it go.
I agree, KDF is fully playable right now. It has less stuff than the Feds, but it has plenty for people to enjoy it.
Its a good read, especially the ''Design'' Section :P
Romulans make generous use of the colors green and grey (lesser-used colors are black and blue, pastel green and pastel orange), and often use materials resembling limestone for construction. The emblem of the Romulan Star Empire depicts a large bird of prey clutching the worlds of Romulus and Remus. The avian motif also appears on their Warbird starships. Those who rejected the teachings of Surak were said to be "beneath the raptor's wing".
You can't seriously belive it's gonna be a Romulan Faction anyway ... more than 2 years of no progress on KDF ... and now they gonna make an entire faction within 4 months ... SUUUUURREEE .... we're playing different games it seems ... 4-5 missions per Season, but Season 8 will have 50 ?
More likely it's gonna be that new FE - Story Content Stuff .... including Iconians, Romulans etc (which they would have to make besides an entire new faction, which is insane by itself)
Gonna bet all my Latinum, it's not gonna be a new faction ...
They'll release a Romulan faction, poorly as usual, and it will be just as bad an iteration as the KDF side has been and there will be much rage on the forums/Zone chat. DStahl will continue to say mostly nothing about the same topics as he has for 2 years+.
KDF is done as far as Cryptic is concerned, apparently.
If it is a Romulan faction, I guarantee you it won't have more content than the KDF at present. High quality, perhaps, due entirely to new tech and VO, but less of it.
Their idea is probably to push out another half-faction with the intent of two halves making a whole, in an abstract way.
Then again, and I'm not usually the pessimistic type, but... two wrongs don't make a right, either.
Dude. Seriously. Calling the KDF a "half-faction" is, to put it friendly, willingly ignoring facts.
KDF gameplay is awesome. Sure, being able to start at level 1 would be better. But it is already a full gameplay experience as it is.
You're right, you start at level 20, so really it's more like 3/5 of a faction.
But seriously. Willfully ignoring facts? The KDF has precious little unique content, a serious lack of ships versus its Fed counterpart, and draws most of its actual content Fed mission repaints.
"Half-faction" may not be literally correct, but no matter how you look at it, they're far from a complete faction.
People are reading too much into their teaser and ignoring the facts.
1. The have already stated that there will be a new Romulan Adventure Zone coming with the next season, in May.
2. They have said that the next issue will be heavily KDF-centric.
3. They have said that Romulans will not become a faction of any sort until KDF is fleshed out from 1 - 50.
4. The official release wiki states that Romulans are still undetermined for the game. They may be a playable species ONLY and they may be a possible mini-faction slated for either S9 or sometime in 2014.
I want Romulans more than ANYONE in this game, trust me on that one, but even I know this teaser is NOT regarding a Romulan faction. I am 110% certain that it is related to the new zone that is coming with S8's release. However...they could have toned down the teaser part instead of getting everyone's hopes up. I can see it now... May rolls around, it'll only be the promised zone, half the playerbase will be let down and upset, ranting will ensue.
It is a full faction. You can do anything as a KDF captain you can do as a Starfleet captain. Already.
How often do people re-play missions? Not often, I would bet. Story missions are nice, yes. But they don't constitute a "full faction".
A wide variety of ships do contribute to a full faction. Several playable species do contribute to a full faction. Endgame missions contribute to a full faction.
In all theses things, Klingons are a full faction in STO.
Alright, fine. Let's ignore the obvious inequality in content as it stands, because technically you're right; you can get from 20 to level cap on the content provided.
But to be a "full" faction implies a full experience. At the bare minimum, a full experience is:
A complete leveling path.
Enough content to minimize repetition of specific content along that path, accomplished with story missions more often than not; i.e., being able to get from 1 to 50 doesn't count if the only way to do it is by running the same two pieces of content over and over.
Access to, at least, all the basic features of the other faction(s), including tiers of gear (and by extension in STO's case, ships).
A variety of repeatable Endgame content.
The KDF simply fails on the first three criteria; that is, it is demonstrably not full.
The KDF completely lacks a leveling experience beneath lvl 20
There is not enough content to support a 1-50 KDF experience without heavy repetition of things like Exploration missions and DOffing.
Though technically accessible, the T1 and T2 KDF ships are meaningless as they are rendered obsolete simply by rolling a KDF toon.
Put simply, your nomenclature is wrong. The KDF is not "full". They are "playable", to be sure; as I mentioned at the start of this post, enough content exists, both unique and shared, to make the incomplete leveling experience we're presented with relatively painless. But they are not, at all, by any stretch of the imagination, a full or complete faction.
KDF just needs a new tutorial and stretch the existing missions so that they work with the lvling path.
Now with all the DOFF lvling, PVP, dailiy missions lvling options, i do not even get to finish the Romulan FE before i hit 50 as a KDF officer.
KDF story missions (the unique ones) are imho far better done as the FED's, some of which are still feeling as a placeholder. I have to know, i played through them several times.
KDF ships are far superior by design and layout compared to FED ships and i do not see this as a CONTENT problem. If there is ever going to be a lvl increase, existing ships will be rendered obsolete anyway.
There is also a very readable tendency towards Fleet Ships and acquiring better equipment through Fleet grinds. So IF they are going to introduce a new faction, the best time would be now.
As a KDF lvl 50 you can do everything a FED cptn can do and more (PVP wise). In fact, the real gaming here begins when you hit VA.
Ael - a new Romulan adventure Zone?
1 - we just got one
2 - can u please link a citation?
3 - don't you think their resources would be better used on creating a faction?
To program a new Zone is on par with creating a HQ's.
To program few new missions is on par with creating a tutorial.
And a faction would be more profitable. Also, 2 Romulan styled Adventure Zones would be a little contraproductive to a possible future faction.
They also are adding new Reputations so it seems to me they wanna BUY TIME to create something BIG.
I have now 2 toons which are done with the 2 reputations, 3rd will be finished in 2 weeks. Ill perhaps consider taking one more toon through that grind.. but they made it clever by not positioning the Contraband DOFF mission to NR, so i would have to either loose my daily 2k Dill or travel around the map for 20 minutes a day
So we can take 6-7 weeks as an average time to complete a reputation by a common STO customer with ONE toon, and they are adding 2 new ones in S8. Every friend of mine (ingame) has at least 3 toons. As i have said - nothing else but buying time ...
I do remember DStahl talking about a planned - half finished Gorn/Nausicaan Adventure Zone though..
Im not saying we'll get Romulan faction in MAY, but if we do, ill be a very happy camper.
I will agree to a third Faction being the Romulans only when they fully complete the KDF:
Which means:
A) KDF a choice as a selectable Faction from the get go
Fully fleshed out Mission tree on par with the Feds
C) A tutorial like the Feds
D) Start out as a Bekk
E) We need MORE ships - already the Feds surpass us in that department
F) We need some REMASTERED Missions like the Feds
G) Make the Har'peng Torp free like the Feds
H) Give us off duty clothing like the Feds
I) Fix are freakin UI color scheme - I feel like I'm in a dungeon all the time
J) Give us a Ferengi playable KDF
K) Delete the Ferasan and get the darn rights to the Kzinti :P
L) Feds got the voice of Nimoy and now Crosby - I want J.G. Hertzler to be the VOICE of the KDF
Come on Cryptic the man literally lives a few miles from where I live, and from time to time makes local appearances in our city - How hard is it to contract the man.
I would love to see all of teh above before we even remotely move in the area of a third faction. Don't get me wrong I love the Rommies - but Cryptic needs to first show some KDF love.
Especially after Dan tore the hearts out all KDF fans in the earlier seasons.
oh one last thing:
M) Better, meanier, and revamped PvP - because Klink love a good fight
3 - don't you think their resources would be better used on creating a faction?
Q: (sc0ttish) Thx for Mol'Rihan. It really feels like a planet surface where people *live*, unlike Defera and Nukara, where everyone are in constant danger. I love to just sit down and chill out on New Romulus, or watch the wild animals running around. I don't want to sound unappeasable, but could we expect other zones like this in the short term, probably by the time of S8?
Dstahl: There will be more adventure zones like this. We?re currently working on Nimbus which will be featured in Season 8 (thus the placeholder for it in the Tau Dewa sector).
Season 8:
1. Nimbus Adventure Zone
2. "at least 1 new FE"
3. an entire new faction ... seriously ...
4. maybe KDF 1-20
1&2 alone are kind of unbelievable considering Cryptics previous Seasons ...
So it's probably just Nimbus with maybe some kind of short FE (like the Cutscenes on New Romulus, Sela attacking Nimbus maybe) ... considering Nimbus is in Romulan Space, the Romulan Teaser KIND OF makes sense :P
Patch Notes : Resolved an Issue, where people would accidently experience Fun.
In the past they told us they would not do a Romulan faction until the KDF was finished. Now that they are implying we will be seeing a Romulan faction in May, will the KDF be finished by then?
Fully fleshed out Mission tree on par with the Feds
- no. nobody plays missions anyway, apart from equipment grind at early VA. We have enough missions as is, and all future missions will be also available.
- NO! a KDF tutorial should be better than that - HEROIC, amazing, stunning! You should be embraced as a new warrior of the empire, you should go through the fire, bleed almost to death, be confronted with your uttermost fears!
Maybe it's a reveal of a massive invasion by Iconians and Tal'shiar that has to be repulsed by the combined efforts of the Federation and Klingon Empire?
This is what I am hoping.
What I would love to see is the chance to finally lock horns with Iconians. Empress Sela returning in her 'Iconianised' Scimitar to reclaim the Romulan Empire, and a huge Iconian invasion force in tow.
New STF style fleet actions where Feds and KDF can fight off the Iconian invasion, I'd even support an Iconian rep system - imagine your ship being enveloped by that freaky black mist thanks to an Iconian console!
I'm not that bothered about a full playable Romulan faction, the Mojai Escort would be a cool ship to use but beyond that I'm 'meh' about it.
I would rather say, yours is. By your definition, the Federation isn't a full finished faction either.
And there will never be such a thing in any MMO anyway.
Exactly, most of the explanations of why KDF is "unfinished" are really gripes about having less story missions, playable races, and ships than Feds.
But.... adding more KDF stuff below level 25 is kinda pointless. Why would I WANT to start at level 1? All that means is 20 or so more levels to grind through....
A proper KDF Tutorial? Why bother? It's completely pointless unless you simply didn't play the Fed tutorial. there are differences between KDF and feds, but, they're not that important.
Ships; KDF has several very novel ships that Feds not only don't get, but don't get anything equivalent to.
Missions: I, personally, have not played all of the Fed missions because most of them have rewards I don't want or need. Why would I care about adding a bunch of equally boring missions to KDF?

New players might not want to Play Federation....my friend got into this game so he can make a Gorn, but hated that he had to play Starfleet first.

True enough. When I first started playing I wanted to play as an Orion. Playing as Fed for 8 levels was pretty easy. Also, back then, the first 8 levels as Fed were basically an extended tutorial anyways. My first Fed char is an "alien" who is a Kriosian/Orion hybrid. My original idea was a Fed Orion, but I messed up and decided she looked more like someone half Kriosian...
I lost interest in playing KDF soon after, because.... KDF had very little to do at that level. It wasn't until they changed things to make KDF start at L22 that I went back to playing that faction.

Missions: I, personally, have not played all of the Fed missions because most of them have rewards I don't want or need. Why would I care about adding a bunch of equally boring missions to KDF?
First of all, the "unfinished" refers to the lack of content exclusive to the faction. For most KDF players the Fed. digest is not real Klingon content.
For ex. the latest 'special embassy project' is the same for Fed & KDF and doesn't look Klingon (or for what is worth neither does it look Orion, Nausicaan etc.) at all. Klingons relaxing in human sofas watching fish-tanks? Yeah, right.
The same can be said about Season 7. Klingons helping poor Romulans settle a new world? I thought the KDF was all out to invade former RSE teritories, not nurture Rommies.
It would maybe have made sence if any of the KDF races were different, but the point of being is that they are similar. Nausicaans are routhless pirates, Orions are marauders that practice slavery, Letheans kill people with thelepatic raptures, Ferasans engineered their own genome to be better and subdue Caitians. Only the Gorn are not that much out there, but it is said in game that they owe allegiance to J'mpok for freeing their world of the Undine infiltration. The Trill KDF story is just another of the Fed.digests KDF was given.
Now KDF content would be trying to destroy the New Romulus colony while the Feds try to build and protect it. Chasing Nanovs and gathering rocks for the Romulans of all people somehow doesn't fall under KDF jurisdiction to most of the KDF. That's the content issues we are talking about. Playing KDF to feel KDF, not to be a Fed. player with red UI.
The Klingon Starbase specials, the KDF ships and the Marauding doff missions are probably the only authentic content the KDF has recieved with a small handfull of FE missions that are Klingon authentic.
I can't find a reason why you or me would want to start and level 1, but probably you same as me have more than one complete level 50 chars. There are people that have not. There are new players that would like to join STO and they coulnd't join KDF even if they wanted to. Then they go on creating a level 25 Fed. to unlock KDF and by that time they want to play and finish the caracter they already invested time & possibly money in.
And then mr.Stahl tells you and me that they will pause the creation of KDF Z-Store ships in the future because they don't get much revenue since small number of players play KDF.
And finally, you and many other people may find playing missions boring, but I'm sure that for each player that finds these boring there is another who loves playing those FE missions and getting that "being a part of Star Trek" feel.
You are right though, there is plenty to do on the KDF side nowdays and even I find it fun to play for the underdog faction even if it has less of everything their blue counterpart get. That's not suprising or anything to be worried about.
What KDF players are concerned is that the status the KDF has atm is hurting the nubers of players and the development of further content as a consequence. KDF are also worried about getting yet another season and content that is Fed. digest with red UI. That's what unfinished means to most of us at least.
We only hope that Cryptic will finally deliver on their promise to make KDF attractive to play in a style that would be very different than the Fed.

Yeah because foundry missions are so great. Please.
