I actually like the new glow; I can see it from further away. The old one was so subtle that sometimes I'd miss it, despite being close enough to see it. (Obviously this is more during missions than on, say, spacedock.)
I wouldn't mind if they made it optional, but I really don't want it removed entirely.
No one ever cuts the Operations division any slack.
Fix the replicators, Chief. My console's on fire, Chief. I should've transferred to a cargo drone. No people, no complaints.
* Watches the Commendation Recommendation he had finished typing up for the Chief as it incinerates on his desk *
There are some things I need my desk for. Why can't Ops understand Admirals have their own troubles too? Is it too much to ask for a Ready Room that you can sit in without wondering if you aren't being exposed to a new form of radiation that will consume the ship and turn everyone into tribbles?
Now, if you will excuse me, I have to get back to the reports the Fleet Admiralty is pleased to require me to submit before dinner, and which certain thermally-enhanced pieces of equipment in my Ready Room seem determined to keep me from completing.
* Stares dejectedly at his smoking comms terminal as the Borg Nullifier Torpedo plans given to them by 'Q' goes up in smoke as well. *
I say keep the yellow horizontal lines and the subtle glow. even the Gear Icon, was ok. but this makes me want to grab a fire extinguisher. It needs to go.
I would have loved to have sit in on the meeting where they decided to put glowing spikes all over the interactive (and some non-interactive) consoles.
Ok here is my problem. I use rocks and bottles as markers in the Foundry missions (Kirkfat Tutorial) placed just below consoles or floors. Now in some cases I can't see the halos and in other cases they look like a fire effect. It depends a lot on where I placed my marker object.
Also I have noticed that a certain distance is required to activate, in my KDF mission I cannot get too close or too far away. It is like I have to be in an EXACT spot to activate the object.
:P
They can use anything they want as long as it shows people where to go and does not look like a special FX.
Seriously, what the heck possessed the team to update the console glow?
Yes, when I have a mission or need something (like I have new mail or something), then sure, highlight THAT SINGLE CONSOLE OR OBJECT... but what the **** is this???

As a compromise to what they have done, I would have the sparkly lines effect on either :
1: A console that I have not been to or ever interacted with, and then once used for the first time, revert back to the standard cog icon with the shimmer light effect on the entire console.
or
2: If there is something new, like for example in your fleet star base, all though out day one of the new item being in existence, it does the sparkly line effect (as to draw the eye to it as a new item in the area).. and then from day 2 onward, it's now a usual cog icon again...
or
3: have a setting that allows you to PICK an interaction animation or indeed turn it off all together (as suggested previously in this forum)
You cannot immerse yourself into a startrek environment where something that would not exist in the show / movies ( IE, flames coming out of a console ) is put here, and expect people to accept it.
Ok devs (where ever you are) here is my suggestion just place a hover icon like you do over the contacts. Then make an option for people who don't want it to turn it off in the GUI interface.
Where I work people walk by a sign that says, "Cafe" to enter the building. They then walk by an open double glass door with people standing at a bar ordering food, sitting at tables eating and with the clank of silverware while passing under a sign that says, "Cafe."
They then pass a large window with a chef behind it making baked goods.
They proceed another 50 feet before approaching me at my desk and asking, "Where is the Cafe?"
I am under the impression that when they see someone at my desk they just turn their brains off knowing I will handle the thinking for them, they only need to ask.
<Le sigh>
I have seen far to many sequences similar to the above, I don't even know where to begin...
Alas it still looks very stupid. It looks as if everyone has done a massive technological overhaul in order to use fairy dust and Unicorn tears as a power source.

EDIT: in all seriousness, while I think the new effect is slightly less obtrusive than the Giant Floating Gears, I still would like an option to turn off the extra effects besides the regular "gold scan" glow. And it doesn't look so much like "fire" to me as much as a transporter effect that never shuts off.

I agree (with turning it off and with it looking like a transporter effect). But I could live with it if it were slightly smaller/shorter.
I will say that it did help me find those dang PADDs on our Starbase last night
On certain objects, on certain maps, the holo-shimmer is easy to miss at first glance unless you're close by.

All the consoles have been infested with Medusans, they wanted to be featured in the game, but if they were in full view, we'd all be driven mad, so the devs shoved em in the consoles.
They probably don't have the graphics any longer. But it shouldn't be that hard to reproduce it. The radioactive fire effect is not that noticeable to me. But the idea of consoles jumping up and down and waving at me is most likely the direction the game will head.
I just logged in to take care of some DOFF missions and finally saw what all this 'interactive console on fire' hubaloo is all about. And, I'm afraid I must heartily concur with what seems to be an overwhelming majority of the player-base, in saying that this new effect is absolutely awful!:(
It looks as though someone is attempting to beam out those consoles. That, or they look to be suffering from an electrical fire of some sort. What have you. It simply looks awful and sadly breaks one's in-game sense of immersion.
Can't say that I would support the floating gear either, whilst I must admit that it looks better than those dreaded energy spikes.
This was seriously an unnecessary change, as the interactive consoles were fine as they had been, before the last patch.

The Ferengi have just sent a message to Starfleet Command, it reads as follows: "All yer consoles are belong to us, so we're takin em". Starfleet security has erected forcefields around all system consoles with but the result is that all affected objects are caught in transit.
Honestly all they need to do is have it set up so the effects don't happen until you mouse over the consoles, I have never had a problem finding an object in missions, that's what the freakin tricorder is for. If they must have the stupid effect for the really dense among us then at least give us an option to turn the interact effects off.
I would rather have a holographic plaque floating in the air over consoles than have them look like I'll get irradiated using them.
I usually applaud improvements to the game but for this one I have to ask what particular medication was the genius that thought this one up taking?
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.
How about just making the consoles glow, perhaps have words on them like "Bank", "Mailbox", "Exchange" etc...and have them clickable rather than this odd interaction distance sphere that is sometimes no where near the objected center????
Why do they have to do anything? Why can't there just be tool tip that says, mailbox, exchange, etc. when you mouse over it?
This was a waste of coding time that would have been better spent on something more important, I thought that the previous glowing with an icon was overkill, now it's just ridiculous looking.
What's the point of creating realistic environments to go and spoil them by having interactable objects glowing like the burning bush of Biblical lore.
What's next, Majel Barrett's voice saying "I'm a mailbox" when you get near it so that even a blind person can find it?

What will we have next for all those blind player who can't see simple console? Jumping tribble showing them way?

This could be used as a storytelling tool as well as facilitating people who want to find interactable objects in their surroundings.
