great fun with the names. Further considering your Cervante-esque comment in the signature, might I guess that you have a crewmember or two with names similar to Dulcinea, Aldonza, or Sancho?

The Mikazuki 5 from Golden Boy - 'Life is Study!'
The Thunder Road from 'Explorers' - my first favorite space movie.
The Lollipop - my Tuffli is a nod to Riker's joke from the series. She's a good ship

USS Nike is the Avenger Battleruiser. Named for the Nike in the Honor Harrington Series. Nike is THE battlecruiser command, and when she commissions she is the most powerful battlecruiser in the fleet.

To be given command of that ship is one of the highest compliments in the Royal Manticore Navy.

KDF, the Eclipse, well named for the HUGE SSD from expanded Star wars universe.

Anduril? Well can't catch that reference, just hang your head in SHAME.

My DHC scimitar used to be called hungry hippo... Get in front of it and omm-nom-nom. Then I made it fast and turny and the name didn't seem to fit... Gonna change it back when I get home though.

Like everyone else there are themes

Gone but not forgotten was James Bond, whose ships started with Dr. No and went through the villians

      Currently,

My KDF contingent , Sahni flies the IKS D'OH (was watching the simpsons when i was in the shipyard)

Snake Plisken flies IKS Zu'ikaku, since the Zuikaku was a Japanese carrier and it sounds kinda Klingon

Taggart commands the USS Alaska after the state and Battlecruiser

Adm. Kamehameha commands the Odyssey class USS Hawai'i. prior ships were named for Hawaiian gods and islands

Yoda is in USS Skywalker, since I'm really going against the franchise

Adm Kristen Vandevoor, AKA 3.14159 of Pi is a liberated Borg. her ships are named for mathematical elements, currently USS Tangent

my 4 mains start with Sci Adm Jana flying the JHDC Shangri-La, named for the carrier

T'Saan is a vulcan Engineer flying battlecruiser USS Talshaya, will be assuming trials in USS 40 Eridani A

the two I fy the most are my tac, Admiral Dejah Thoris Burroughs, originally created for my girlfriend before she got her own account. She commands ships all with names related to Barsoom or Mars. usually USS Sword of Mars, a JHDC

and finally Adm Henry Drummond (extra points if you know who he is) Admiral Drummond switches his flag among the ships of Cruiser-Destroyer Group 12. All ships in CDG-12 have names related to the constellation Aquila. His flag is currently embarked in the converted Thoilian carrier USS Tarazed.

I really tend to struggle with ship names.

I use "England" and "Bristol" for some ship names since those places mean a lot to me.

On my Caitian Tac female I'm running a theme. Firerunner, Firelance, Firestorm, Firefly.

On my main human female sci Captain I've named my Vesta the U.S.S. Taggart. If you've seen the Federation tutorial you'll know why.

My Joined Trill female Eng Captain is in the U.S.S. England as mentioned above.

My Ex-Borg human female Captain is in a Nicor Bioship named "Leviathan." Its a Farscape reference.

My Fed!Romulan and KDF Klingon are in ships named using the random name generator.

One word of advice: Don't take the USS Rose 'N Ant anywhere near Cygnus X-1. Odd things will tend to happen.

      I use three ships. each

U.S.S Celestia is my Soveraign class Cruiser, reason why is that Celestia I liked the name and felt that it fit.

U.S.S Valiant is my Defiant class retrofit escort, I named it after the original Valiant that was lost due to the moronic actions of Red Squad.

I.S.S Amaryllis is my mirror universe Luna class science ship, not sure why I called it this.

My 1st/main toon is Overfourtee (UFP Science) and the theme was slogans from the American Revolution, but recently changed to "Starbreaker", named after a Judas Priest song.

My 2nd toon is Kerry (UFP Tactical) whose theme was flags but now it is just "Gadsden", after the Gadsden Flag of the Revolution Era.

I recently started a 3rd toon, Eekoedireng (UFP Engineering) whose ships are/will be named "O'Brien", after the Chief O'Brien character.

Since writing this, the ships of my toons Kerry & Eekoedireng have been through a couple of renamings! I'm currently in the process of winding down play on my Overfourtee and Kerry toons, (will discharge them eventually), so I decided to have Eekoedireng's ships take on the Starbreaker moniker.

My Fed toons were by far the easier ones for this...

My tac's ships were named after various things from (mostly) Norse myth for a while; the Gram, the Volsung, the Beowulf. Just recently he shifted from his Maelstrom-class escort to a FACR, and I (slightly) shifted gears to name her the Diomede.

My sci's ship is the USS Paragon, named after the Birthplace of Tomorrow (pours out a 40 for COH).

I have a very hard time with my KDF ships. You want it to sound "authentic", and not just a few syllables strung together. Sometimes I just go with a random generation unless/until something strikes me.

Ones where that worked for me are the Vokor'At (I don't know what it means, but I wanted something that clearly derives from the same source as Sto'Vokor), the Lukara (named after Kahless' wife), and the Selthane (my Orion's destroyer, I just liked the sound). My Gorn engineer has had a series of battlecruisers named after monsters from human mythology (I figure he did that as a psych-out maneuver or some such).

      Generator
      =================

I'm sure your DPS is great, but as Kahless said, "a petaQ with high system mastery is still a petaQ." (Well, he should have said it...!)

My 3 Tier 5-U ships' names

Dyson Science Destroyer (Federation)- USS Cadia, the home world of the Cadian Imperial Guard regiments in 40k

Risian liner- Valley of Khorne, one of my favourite maps in vanilla Dawn of war

My Fleet Avenger Battle cruiser, U.S.S. Dragoon - named after 18th century heavy mounted infantry, who were the ultimate troops of their era.

My Breen Chel-Gret warship, U.S.S. Chimera - because her looks justifies it, and because (Grand) Admiral Thrawn has to have his Chimera...

And my Risian Corvette, the R.X.S. Charger, hull number 69 - Because 1969 simply wasn't and option... :)

USS Thunderclaw a T5-u fleet avenger named after my toon in Champions Online

HMS Tamerisk T5-u Risian Corvette named in honour of the corvette of the same name from WW2

Lucky Nepta T5-u Risian cruiser being used by my Ferasen as a pirate ship!

Might as well post the full list:

For Arkos Nair, my Fed Alien Engineer:

U.S.S. Da Vinci (Miranda-class)- named after Leonardo da Vinci. I thought it would be a fitting ship name for an Engineer captain

U.S.S. Hadrian (Excalibur-class)- named after the Roman Emperor famous for building Hadrian's Wall in Britain. Again, there's an engineering theme I was going for here.

U.S.S. Aurelius (Galaxy-class)- named after the Roman philosopher-emperor, Marcus Aurelius.

U.S.S. Kon Tiki (Ambassador-class retrofit)- named after the raft used by the Norse adventurer Thor Heyerdahl. It was a fitting name for what I feel is still an exploration ship.

U.S.S. Ivanova (Sovereign-class)- actually...I forget who this ship was named after. Wasn't this "Ivanova" person a cosmoanut or something? (:D)

U.S.S. Archimedes (Mirror Heavy Cruiser Retrofit, Dakota/Stargazer hybrid)- my "main" ship, named after the famous Greek polymath. Again, I thought it was a great name for an Engineer's starship.

U.S.S. Axiom (Nebula-class)- named after a ship from a Star Trek tabletop RPG I was involved in once.

Naqarra (Risian Corvette)- I actually decided to use the Risian Corvette to stand in for a ship belonging to my Alien Captain's parent species. As such, I went with an alien, but still rather pleasant-sounding, name for the ship. I may decide to feature the Naqarra in a future LC one day.

U.S.S. Chronos (Obelisk Carrier)- named after the Titan in Greek mythology who fathered Zeus. I figured it was a suitable name that captured both the massive size and the "ancient" feel of the Obelisk carrier. Originally, though, I had named it the U.S.S. Daniel Jackson in a nod to Stargate SG-1.

For Meral Ranek, my Cardassian-Fed Tactical Girl:

U.S.S. Hadfield (Centaur-class)- named after Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield

U.S.S. Kestrel (Gladius-class)- named after the starting ship in the game FTL.

U.S.S. Hector (Akira-class)- named after the Trojan hero from The Iliad. Originally, I wanted to name it the U.S.S. Martok, but for some reason the game wouldn't let me.

U.S.S. Patton (Defiant-class)- named after American WWII General George S. Patton.

U.S.S. Axanar (Hermes/Dervish hybrid)- named after the pivotal battle of the Earth-Klingon War.

For Lynathru, my Orion KDF Captain:

        I.K.S. Kortus (B'Moth Bird-of-Prey)- randomly generated.

I.K.S. Notqa' (Norgh Bird-of-Prey)- "black bird" in Klingon.

        I.K.S. Kor'bak (Ki'tang Bird-of-Prey)- randomly generated.

        I.K.S. Qa'rol (Hegh'ta Bird-of-Prey)- "larger black bird"

I.K.S. Both-Boht (Su'Qob Raider)- ranndomly generated. Also, I thought it sounded hilarious.

I.K.S. Oricar (Orion Marauder)- made up name.

I.K.S. Slann (Gorn Phalanx)- named after a hyperintelligent magical toad in Warhammer Fantasy. I'm not kidding.

I.K.S. Rock Lobster (Risian Luxury Cruiser)- Starfleet went out from Earth Spacedock, and thought they saw a rock. But it wasn't a rock...it was a rock lobster!

And finally, for Ta'nara, my Romulan Scientist:

R.R.W. Keras (T'Liss Warbird)- named after Mark Lenard's Romulan Captain from "The Balance of Terror."

        R.R.W. Arien (Dhelan Warbird)- randomly-generated.

R.R.W. Xanitla (D'deridex Warbird)- named after a pivotal battle of the Romulan Civil War from the STO background.

R.R.W. Anarhai (Mirror Ha'nom Warbird)- lit. "dawn."

R.R.W. Aen'Temar (Mirror Mogai Retrofit Warbird)- literally "wing of night."

R.R.W. Tagor (Aves Dyson Destroyer)- lit. "talon." I settled on this name because I couldn't figure out what White Star was in Rihannsu.

R.R.W. Corax (Faeht Intel Warbird)- named for the Latin family name for raven, corvus corax. Also named after a character from Warhammer 40,000 renowned for his elusiveness.

U.S.S. Firebird (fleet Excelsior). Named after a ballet with music composed by Igor Stravinsky.

R.R.W. Blood Dragon (Scimitar). I enjoyed Farcry 3, I never played Blood Dragon but the name just seemed to fit.

I.K.S. The Black Lodge (Kar’Fi Battle Carrier). Because I love Twin Peaks.

Well started a new engineer fed side for fun and named my captain Athrun Zala.

So far he commands the NX class USS White Base. Think original Gundam. Soon he will command the following because this time I want to play what ships I love per tier.

USS Albion(Rhode Island) named for the MS carrier from gundam 0083(gee see a pattern here?)

USS Argama(thunderchild) named for the MS carrier from gundam zeta.

USS Peacemillion(galaxy) MS carrier from gundam wing.

USS Ptolemaois (excelsior refit) named for the MS carrier in gundam 00

USS Archangel (Regent) named for the MS carrier from gundam seed

USS Minerva (Guardian) named for carrier from gundam seed destiny.
