Beautiful work on these ships. They have a very unified feel to them, with the tri-lateral symmetry and dark, brooding look to them. There's something inherently mysterious about the look of the Tholian ships, which really captures the essence of their (few) appearances on-screen. Well done, everybody!
Also, I am really enjoying the fanfare accompanying the release of these ships. This (for me, at least) is a highly anticipated new adversary, and I'm looking forward to see the new dynamics they bring to STO.
It's easy to use simple geometric shapes. Although the Tholian ships look good, they generally use various sizes of triangles for their ship design. It's infinitely harder to design and model a more detailed and curved ship, like most Federation designs.
CapnLogan's reputation as a "Ship God" remains standing. JamJamz still has "much to learn" from the master, imho.
I would argue that while you may be right in terms of difficulty, this has little influence on the quality and complexity of the final product, nor does it devalue the creativity that goes into designing angular vs smooth.
It's also worth considering that this early-era Jamz (Tholian vessels) and Miller (Type 10 Shuttle and Armitage) work blows the pants off early Logan (see: Imperial, Comet, etc.). Logan's stride didn't hit until the "Fleet of 2409" look come to light, and even then there were some occasional misses (Bellerophon is comparatively subpar, Sao Paulo is too similar to Defiant at a glance).
I'm not necessarily trying to say you're wrong, just that I think you're underselling Jamz and Miller.
There was a picture posted up on the Friday screenshot of the day which shows a Tholian on the ground. -- You have to see them in-game, they're much much more impressive, a still doesn't do them justice, not in the slightest.
Gawd I hate spiders. Thanks for the nightmares to come.
Ugh, me too.
I live in an area that has tons of spiders that just looove to get into my house no matter what kinds of bug spray I use. Few weeks ago I was about to go to bed, pulled back the sheets and 3 spiders run out from under them and go underneath my bed. Wtf. Look under the bed to try to kill them, they're gone. Wtf. Go to sleep later and wake up the next morning. Spider chilling on my pillow next to my head. WTF. Freak out and throw pillow. Go to unplug my cell phone, spider chilling on the plug adapter (guess it was warm). WTF. Go to take a shower. Spider comes out from the light fixture in the ceiling and dangles on his web right in front of my face while I'm in the shower.W T F. And that kind of stuff happens here every day. I can't get rid of them. hAhAhHAAHAHhhahaAHHA.
....wait what was this thread about again? Oh right Tholian ships. They look super sweet, but I'm afraid that I'm going to do everything in my power to shoot as many of them down as I can. I hate spiders. I hate them.
Wow nice looking designs. Especially the widow! There is a familiar look! But uh... I may be wrong but I thought Tholian ships were named after gems? Like the Amethyst class, Ruby class and the Quartz class like in Klingon Academy...? Its been so long so I apologize truly if I am wrong as I hope you don't think I'm discrediting your work in any way cuz I'm not! It made sense though especially after observing them in the original series, Enterprise, and Star Trek: Shattered Universe that they looked crystalline in appearance... But amazing work! Can't wait to see them in action!
Klingon Academy and Shattered Universe, awesome as they were (Gawd I miss those days), are non-canon (and made by a completely different company to boot), so Cryptic has a bit of artistic license when it comes to new ships and gear for canon races that've previously made appearances in Trek games.

Gem names would make a LOT more sense. I doubt they would name their ships after Terran Arachnids, especially when they're a crystalline species and the gem names would most likely have a direct parallel in their native "tongue".
They didn't name their ships after arachnids... we did. Tholians probably have their own terms for their ships, but the Federation ship identification chart lists them with arachnid names.

Yeah, sort of like NATO designations for Soviet aircraft back in the day.

Yeah, makes sense. When you see a ship spinning webs, crystalline or not, as a Fed captain, you are thinking spiders and thinking about squashing them.
The Borg Queen called, shes jealous, and wants to assimilate their ship designer.
I'll admit, these Tholian ships do strike fear into my heart. But that wont stop the U.S.S. Zorro from running straight at them! Dreadnought to Dreadnought!

And thanks for a most excellent Trek minutia thread. Nice to see the ships thought out so far as to actually have intended measurements and scale. Some of us thrive on such things.

You heard it here first folks... Giant Tholian Admirals. If you thought regular Tholians were scary...
On topic... cool and formidable looking ships. I may have to go on Tribble this weekend as the exception rather than the rule
I don't care how long you've been playing. I only care about how you play.
And remember to follow the rules.
I suppose I should post more ship stuff as time goes on, yes?
Cheers!

Me too... if I got to name these ships, it would have certainly been names of delicious candy.
