that's because ISE is the quickest and most straightforward to complete, and therefore the go-to for R&D, mark and/or dil farming
i actually did a run several days ago to grab a load of dilithium for zen conversion so i could grab the last T5 fed ship i didn't have before the sale ended...9 characters, 1 CCE, ISE, KASE and CSE each
out of all that, i only had one bad ISE
That's good.
Yeah, I see build you wouldn't believe in ISE...just had a d'kyr with all torps and turrets. Rainbow, of course.

i still fully intend to make a rainbow build on the luxury cruiser i got this summer for ****s and giggles - and make it actually work with good damage
i have to do the name 'Disco Inferno' justice, after all
this is the basic build i have planned for it, for which any major changes to be made will have to wait until after DR - one of those fleet neuts and the fleet RCS should be the conductive RCS and particle field exciter from crafting, but those aren't in the build planner yet

Good...might wanna swap the tetryon and protonic polaron for regular polaron and spiral wave?
Oh, wait, you need the tetryon to REALLY taste the rainbow...
i am NOT buying a 150m EC ship just for one beam array...
and the protonic polaron i might switch out for a thoron-infused polaron, or maybe a dominion polaron now that they can be upgraded
come to think of it...i could swap the phased tetryon for a polarized tetryon since those can now be upgraded too - lose the extra phaser proc but gain an extra 7.5% chance for the tetryon proc to, well...proc

You know, upgrade everything to MK 14 gold and that could be a very nasty ship in HSE...Even new HSE with its 3.2 million-HP cubes.
You know, upgrade everything to MK 14 gold and that could be a very nasty ship in HSE...Even new HSE with its 3.2 million-HP cubes.
eh, i don't think so...i upgraded everything on shadow's scimitar to mk 14 gold as soon as they released the upgrade system (everything that i COULD upgrade, anyway - assimilated modules and exp. plasma beam arrays STILL can't be, on tribble OR holodeck), and i had severe trouble dealing with a basic captain-level vaadwaur group on elite difficulty; battleship and escorts, and the battleships only have 800k HP or so
if i kept getting blown up in my most powerful ship by simple story-mode vaadwaur (seriously, those artillery barrages are fooking DEADLY on elite!), i don't see how a rainbow ship could possibly be anywhere close to nasty in HSE, no matter how well-built
though, you do have 4 other team mates, so depending on their level of competence...maybe, just maybe

Mine is currently equipped with a Mk13 purple Dominion Polaron. I have a Phased Tetryon, Exp Rom Plas, KCB, the 360 AP, a regular AP, the anti-Undine Disruptor, a fleet phaser.
Tonight my fleet had a pretty low head count online so 3 of us decided to roll with 2 PUGs for IGE. It was.. interesting..
We use the in-game voice chat rather than a Teamspeak server so that any PUGs with voice enabled can hear us coordinate and strategize, regardless of if they speak back.
Our PUG duo consisted of one questionable player and one exceptionally arrogant player who was in need of a severe attitude adjustment (read: tire iron to the side of the head). The first thing we did upon beam in was ask in team chat (typed) if they knew where the invisible trigger lines for each room were. Neither of them answered, which boded well... Now, I don't know if the questionable player was just inexperienced or didn't have their headphones on or didn't speak English or what but they did have a comm bar by their portrait so they should have been able to hear us when we repeated our questions and tried to communicate over voice. Henceforth I shall refer to this player as the "Meh" player.
2 of my fleet trio (self included) and the Meh player run over to the forcefield while the 3rd of my fleet trio gets ready to do the honors of speaking with the NPC to lower the forcefield while the rest of us smash all of our abilities to alpha strike everything on the other side. Immediately the arrogant player launches into a profanity-laden diatribe about:
"i can handle under gear people , handle idiots , one thing cannot handle is someone
stand by guy and wait
push the freaking dialog buttons
or move on ! )"
This was less than 15 seconds into the beginning of the STF and it only got worse from there. I should point out now that the arrogant one had their comms disabled (no bar by their portrait). The Meh player ran through every single trigger in every single room without pausing and the arrogant one threw a temper tantrum laced with plenty of swearing and insults every few minutes.
Now, the other two in my fleet trio say that the arrogant one was also prematurely breaking the triggers but I didn't notice that. I was too busy saving each of the crewmen from worker drones and when I did actually get eyes on the arrogant one he was always lagging way behind, typically because he was frothing in the team chat and thus, standing still. So after the first 2 rooms my fleet trio knew that the Meh player was going to break every trigger line and that there was no time to thin the herd of drones from a distance beforehand. As a result we had to blitzkrieg every room (in a slightly-chaotic, voice-coordinated fashion) before it was able to fail, including allowing ourselves to be sacrificed and rez'd (although that only happened once) as long as the workers died.
Our hastily-assembled plan was successful, if not stressful, and we essentially carried the entire STF to save the optional. I only wish that I'd had my parser running so I could quantify just how terrible the know-it-all player was. When we got to the boss room that arrogant player just stood at the entrance, having apparently suffered a rage-induced stroke, while the rest of us cleared all of the drones in about 20 seconds. He continues to vomit obscenities about how much we apparently "suck" as we upload the virus to each corner terminal while chastising him for standing there and doing nothing. We kill off Manus in about 6 seconds and the PUGs immediately beam out.
Our story isn't quite over, however; that same arrogant player was later seen in zone chat asking "which one is ige". After being informed by another player of which STF IGE is, he said:
"all i do is ige after they cancelled colony mission doffs"
whatever that means. When encouraged by a third player to learn how to do the other grounds he said that was "boring" and yet then asked if there was another besides Infected, Cure, and Khitomer.
I suppose all of that is to be expected from someone whose character name rhymes with "derp."
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
A post to get judgments from experienced captains...
In "Spire-E", with an Excelsior (Refit). Modestly equipped with what I call my "standard" build.
(6- retro-fit "Blue" Phaser Banks, 1- Photon Mk-XII, 1- Quantum Mine Mk-XII, Consoled and
Boff'd/Doff'd for primarily phasers/beams (OL rather than FAW), secondarily photons).
Quaint, I know...
Anyway, other (4) were a... Galaxy DN, Vesta, Avenger, and a FED PatESCT.
I'm not much good at chat in the midst of battle, but do monitor, watching for instructions, or
requests for aid. As a rookie, its easy to spot competent skippers, and the Galaxy/Avenger were without question. Lost track of the Vesta, but was benefit of several heals during the
initial wild battles.
Stuck to the flank of the Galaxy (No way I could have done so with the Avenger the way he was
maneuvering, a real dance) firing on the larger targets, and using "Draw Fire" as my ship is well
suited for self heals.
Chat fairly quiet, except Mr. Esct, who kept saying do this, do that, right NOW. No one replied,
or did what Esct wanted, so neither did I. After a bit, I see in chat from Galaxy "Graf kill transp".
My ship name is "Graf Spee", so I begin to target the troop transports rather than warships. Now
Esct is yelling at me, (All bold caps) "STP, STP, HLP W CRUSR. I continue with Transports.
We have now cleared both sides of Spire, things quiet down. (Esct has now blown up at least (3)
times). I got close a couple of times, but Vesta saved me. In chat from Galaxy "Graf&Firecracker
kill shtl we try dread". I don't remember Esct's ship name, but it was NOT "Firecracker".
Had me laughing. I head out to intercept shuttles, what does Esct do, heads over to the
Dreadnaught. While I'm chasing down shuttles (only 4, or 5 got through, rather proud of myself
if that's permitted), I see Esct die at least (3) more times.
Well, they manage to kill the dreadnaught, (not easy from what I'm told) and all optionals were
won. Congrat's all around from Galaxy. As I swing back to pick up some drops, here comes Esct
buzzing around me, just cursing in every way you can imagine, at me, specifically. When I go to
try and find out why he's so put out, I discover he's put me on ignore??? And we completed all
objectives??? Collected 120+ marks, and they say thats quite good.
Had a great time, learned for the next run (don't know about that Dreadnaught tho'). But Esct,
I do pity him/her. What it must be like to wake up in the morning being them, eek.
If you try to /tell somebody and it says they are ignoring you, it may simply be they have their privacy settings to not allow messages. It doesn't mean you are truly "ignored" all the time. A lot of folks can't be invited to queues or get /tells because of their game setting. It doesn't mean they are vindictive (not always)... just maybe in this case it means they're incompetent.
At least, judging by your description, I'd go with the "incompetent" verdict.
You might make the mistake of thinking DPS-Strong=overall strong. While my Scimitar sure levels entire mobs currently, it has to do it because it cant take much incoming damage, at least not over extended periods of time. Therefore I consider my sci recluse my "strongest" ship as it can level entire mobs without having difficulties at tanking, and thats with a very aggressive build, though of course its not as dps-strong as my Tac Scimi.
The way for DR is, most likely, to focus a bit more on the Tanking Side. Usually you dont have to take much dps away to get much tanking ability, so I consider DR not such a big problem for myself.
But I see that the usual pug will get heavily "used" from elite NPCs.

Yeah, by my calculations new HSE needs one tac Vesta that can tank as well as an Avenger and put out about at least 20k DPS while still keeping a good drain/debuff set, one Recluse that parses a minimum of 30k and can still tank, two FAWmitards with a bare minimum DPS of 30k and at least one don't-blow-me-up console to keep them alive, and a FPER specced for maximum forward DPS.
Therefore I consider my sci recluse my "strongest" ship as it can level entire mobs without having difficulties at tanking, and thats with a very aggressive build, though of course its not as dps-strong as my Tac Scimi.
I'm hearing a lot of praise for the Recluse lately, and how it's a 30K ship easily, etc. I'm curious what your build looks like. Do you have a link? My carrier experience is mostly a KDF sci in Mirror Vo (love that ship!) but have since moved on to more nimble raider-style sci tactics. I still have all my Voquv gear, though, and can go back when the mood takes me.
But I'm curious about these 30K Recluse setups. I'm wondering if it's really the ship and build or if it's 99% piloting and I just suck at piloting. I never broke 10k in my Mirror Vo, but then I wasn't spending tons of money either.

well, this is what i've currently got on my scimitar on holodeck...maybe you can point out what i can change around to get some better survivability without losing too much damage
one thing, though...as far as doffs are concerned, zemok, marion and any similarly-priced are out of the question - i flat out refuse to spend the price of an entire lockbox ship on one doff

Well, I only fly a recluse on my Sci, and it usually rates 20-22k with a pug (ISE) or 24-28k with a good group. But I think it is save to assume the same setup can go 30k+ with a tactical captain (like some already did).
My build is this: http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/?build=dpsrecluse_4677 , though Skillplanner got two things wrong: First, its a real kdf-alien, second, the weaponmods are crtdx2.
Of course there is piloting involved, but I am used to escorts on DHCs -or rather, I started with them, now I am used to pretty much everything. So I cant really understand ppl complaining about scimitars turnrate... they should try the atrox, or the recluse. They dont have a radius to turn, its an orbit^^.
Piloting itself is pretty much staying close to (all) enemies, lead the way (first at the target, most damage produced... though for pugs thats not an issue), and plan your abilities -especially for defence- wisely.
And since its flying beams, the amount of piloting involved is not as high as it is for an escort on dhcs. If you have the helmsman, but its not a requirement (but nice to have), I did the same numbers I do now before I got my hands on it for this char.

I presume you use 2 connofficers for tactical team. I would now add 3 damage control engineers, so you dont need 4 EptS-abilties.
Then discard DEM. Add EptS3 and Aux2Sif 1. That is your lt.cmd. uni. On the lt. you could add a EptS 1 (as safety, to trigger manually), and ET 2. Or ET 1+2. That way you add more res (hull+shields) and much more hullheals+a bit more shieldheal.
Or you use ET 1, EptS2, EptW 3 (lt.cmd.eng) and ET1/EptS1 (reasons above)+Aux2Sif 1 (lt. eng). That way its more res (hull only), hullheal and damage (EptW3>DEM2 without Marion&Aux2bat).
Another possibility would be to discard lt.cmd. engineering for sci, and add Polarize hull, TSS 2, HE 3. Though that would be my least prefered one.
The console I would offer for safety is nukara, as the +10 acc doesnt matter with FAW. Instead I would either add an embassy-pla-flowcap, Bioneural or Tachyokinetic (depending what you have) for more damage or a neutronium (fleet/crafting) for res (switch one of the unis in engineering to sci).
Nanoprobe fieldgen highly depends on your shieldres. If you already got much, its near useless, if you dont, its ok. Look it up with the combatlogreader. For tanking nukara t4 defence and emergendary secondary shielding and active hull hardening are better.
Also advanced targeting systems is superior to tactical advantage damage-wise.
Spacetraits: use only spactraits in space. There are quite some missing, like astrophycist (little, but nice), fleet tactician (if you have it), and either infiltrator or romulan operative. Warp theorist (eptS/W) and techie (hull heals) also add a bit.
Tetryon kaskade (nukara t5) also add 1.5-4k dps, but has to be used within 3km to a mob (like spheres in ISE).
P.S.: While I certainly understand the value of using zemok, Marion is pretty much outdated these days. I also wouldnt advice either if you just want to play and dont wont to attack the top-dps. Because if you dont, they are far too expensive for too little gain.
Also tactical advantage is superior to tactical advantage damage-wise.
umm...how can a trait be superior to itself?
as for the rest of the suggestions...there are some very good suggestions there, so i'll give them a try
and for the doffs, what would you suggest for #6, provided i ever get that? keel'el seems to be a popular choice, and that shouldn't be so ridiculously expensive like zemok
oh, and my captain is an alien, so i can't use either romulan operative or infiltrator - what about biotech patch or fluidic coocoon? or any of the crafting traits or special gear?

I changed it^^ I meant advanced targeting systems (+crtd) is superior to tactical advantage.
Keelel is a nice choice, a normal warp core engineer is too. Dicroc (+shieldpower when firing energy weapons) is also valid.
Fluidic cocoon is ok, but not the hit. Biotech patch is a very good trait, I use it on every char and am very satisfied with it.
Crafting havent tried the traits yet, but I thing engineering and sci-trait (if you use isometric charge) are choices to test against others.

is ATS always superior to tactical advantage, or only after you hit a certain level of crit chance?
i figured biotech patch was going to be a keeper; that's why i bought one for each main i have (of which the captain flying this scimitar is my republic main) plus a few other characters while it was still 'cheap'
and the science crafting trait operates off particle generators - the higher it is, the better the effect of the trait, and since i have almost none, it would be useless to me
engineering one might be worth looking into, though, but since this character's engineering crafting level is at a respectable 0, it'll take me a while to get
anyway, thanks for the help - this should definitely help out my survivability without losing me too much offense

The worst STF experiences I have are when I get in a group and they all have FAW, point themselves toward the objectives, press a single button and walk away. I may as well not even be there, because nothing I do matters. all the fun and enjoyment of struggling with the enemy is taken away and I am reduced to being a spectator in a lightshow, hoping and praying that during the next game I might luck out and get an AFK or 2, or a few players who dont just reduce the scope of the video game into a series of 0's and 1's in a computer program that might just as well be played without a computer monitor.
Considering you should have 10%+ crth on any ship, ATS is indeed always superior.
eh, not necessarily...romulans are easy to get there - just slot 5 SRO romulans, but feds and kdf take a bit more effort
most of what i get from either of those factions comes from the rep stuff, which i don't end up buying until all my reps are maxed out
so for a newer fed/kdf character that has less than that amount of crit chance, i'm thinking tactical advantage would be a good placeholder until you can get up to that point, after which you'd switch out for ATS, correct?
anyway, that's good to know that particular trait is superior for damage when you have a good amount of crit; i have some shuffling around to do on other characters
thanks again for the advice; i should probably let the thread get back to its intended purpose now

If you have low crit, use mk xi crth x2 weapons, you switch to crtdx2/3 if you have enough. I find getting FC fearly easy, and fleet tac consoles are the first thing to get, second maybe only to the shield. So personally, crth is quite easy to get.
And since normal weapons are bound to account, you can just give the crth-weapons to your newest char without buying more
Some guy that wanted to play the hero decided to just squat right on top of Kang to heal him up and i mean like right on top of him. Reason for that was because two guys were AFK for about a minute at the start so 4 bops dps'd kang for a bit. We managed to kill the 1st cube pretty quick but kang was already down to like 20-40% hull. I kept telling this dude to move up a little bit on the middle cube to help the guys instead of sitting right on top of kang. Told him heals had a 10km range so he could move up a little bit and help out in the middle and keep raptors from getting to kang. I was alone on the right side but i was killing raptors pretty easily. The middle raptors were getting too close to kang though because they kept switching from flying straight and dumb to active mode.
Dude could have been healing kang AND dpsing raptors flying straight and dumb. Instead he stood right on top of kang and ended up healing kang and fighting active raptors instead (who did manage to get a few shots off on kang). Funniest part was dude called me out and tried to tell me i didnt know how the instance was supposed to run. If i had not been killing raptors on the right side we would have failed for sure. But it sounded like this person was pretty much crediting themselves with saving the entire run.

Trying to get as much pugs as I can before DR hits.
ISE maybe 10 minutes ago, 2 Voquws, rommie vet ship, and an Oddy.
Carriers (both sci) died once or twice each, but generally did their job. Rommie "veteran" blew up 3 times, maybe he had a bad day.

Well, because stf have been way to easy for so long it seems that people have forgotten basics such as 10% rule and using team chat.

This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

That's good.
Yeah, I see build you wouldn't believe in ISE...just had a d'kyr with all torps and turrets. Rainbow, of course.
i have to do the name 'Disco Inferno' justice, after all
this is the basic build i have planned for it, for which any major changes to be made will have to wait until after DR - one of those fleet neuts and the fleet RCS should be the conductive RCS and particle field exciter from crafting, but those aren't in the build planner yet

Good...might wanna swap the tetryon and protonic polaron for regular polaron and spiral wave?
Oh, wait, you need the tetryon to REALLY taste the rainbow...
and the protonic polaron i might switch out for a thoron-infused polaron, or maybe a dominion polaron now that they can be upgraded
come to think of it...i could swap the phased tetryon for a polarized tetryon since those can now be upgraded too - lose the extra phaser proc but gain an extra 7.5% chance for the tetryon proc to, well...proc

You know, upgrade everything to MK 14 gold and that could be a very nasty ship in HSE...Even new HSE with its 3.2 million-HP cubes.
if i kept getting blown up in my most powerful ship by simple story-mode vaadwaur (seriously, those artillery barrages are fooking DEADLY on elite!), i don't see how a rainbow ship could possibly be anywhere close to nasty in HSE, no matter how well-built
though, you do have 4 other team mates, so depending on their level of competence...maybe, just maybe

Frankly, it's just been a run of bad luck. That, and I tried to use actual tactics instead or raw DPS in a PUG.

My character Tsin'xing

Quaint, I know...
Anyway, other (4) were a... Galaxy DN, Vesta, Avenger, and a FED PatESCT.
I'm not much good at chat in the midst of battle, but do monitor, watching for instructions, or
requests for aid. As a rookie, its easy to spot competent skippers, and the Galaxy/Avenger
were without question.

New HSE will be essentially unpuggable, though.
I never broke 10k in my Mirror Vo, but then I wasn't spending tons of money either.
http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/index.php?build=shadowfang_4451
one thing, though...as far as doffs are concerned, zemok, marion and any similarly-priced are out of the question - i flat out refuse to spend the price of an entire lockbox ship on one doff

Because if you dont, they are far too expensive for too little gain.
as for the rest of the suggestions...there are some very good suggestions there, so i'll give them a try
and for the doffs, what would you suggest for #6, provided i ever get that? keel'el seems to be a popular choice, and that shouldn't be so ridiculously expensive like zemok
oh, and my captain is an alien, so i can't use either romulan operative or infiltrator - what about biotech patch or fluidic coocoon? or any of the crafting traits or special gear?

I changed it^^ I meant advanced targeting systems (+crtd) is superior to tactical advantage.
Keelel is a nice choice, a normal warp core engineer is too. Dicroc (+shieldpower when firing energy weapons) is also valid.
Fluidic cocoon is ok, but not the hit. Biotech patch is a very good trait, I use it on every char and am very satisfied with it.
Crafting havent tried the traits yet, but I thing engineering and sci-trait (if you use isometric charge) are choices to test against others.
i figured biotech patch was going to be a keeper; that's why i bought one for each main i have (of which the captain flying this scimitar is my republic main) plus a few other characters while it was still 'cheap'
and the science crafting trait operates off particle generators - the higher it is, the better the effect of the trait, and since i have almost none, it would be useless to me
engineering one might be worth looking into, though, but since this character's engineering crafting level is at a respectable 0, it'll take me a while to get
anyway, thanks for the help - this should definitely help out my survivability without losing me too much offense

most of what i get from either of those factions comes from the rep stuff, which i don't end up buying until all my reps are maxed out
so for a newer fed/kdf character that has less than that amount of crit chance, i'm thinking tactical advantage would be a good placeholder until you can get up to that point, after which you'd switch out for ATS, correct?
anyway, that's good to know that particular trait is superior for damage when you have a good amount of crit; i have some shuffling around to do on other characters
thanks again for the advice; i should probably let the thread get back to its intended purpose now

^^ This. Pretty much this....
