Since Delta Rising, occasionally when exiting out of the STO client, it will kill the audio for my PC and I will get no sound at all until I reboot. Only happens with STO, nothing else does this. Only been happening since Delta Rising. It's still happening today, with season 10.5, but it doesn't happen every time. It's sporadic. No idea what's causing it or if the dev's need to look into driver compatibility with the client for this family of cards.
Using a Creative Soundblaster Zx (model SB1506), driver version L13.1.00.28 for Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
I get no errors at all. After the client closes when I use the UI to exit the game, either the sound works or it doesn't. A reboot of the PC fixes it.
All drivers are current, including Windows Update and the sound card, as well as the most current board BIOS. Creative just put out new drivers for Windows 10 which I don't have so my current driver version is correct for my Windows 7. Any ideas are welcome, or maybe a dev could look into it for a fix down the line. It's not a big deal to reboot, but it's annoying. No other program does this. Thanks for any assistance.
"General Server Stability" means they are bolting the servers to the floor, right? Wouldn't you be upset if Branflakes were to go stumbling into the server room, knock a rack over, and bring the game down for a DAY? SO, they aren't scrwing it up, they are bolting it down.
Since updating to Win 10, my sound blaster Zx has been producing a popping sound on the load screen about 1/5th of the way in. Occasionally the game sound will completely die when in a space battle and the entire computer's sound will not work. I have to re-boot in order to re-initialize and get it working again. Using the latest SB win 10 drivers. Any help?
In the new mission (Midnight), the "two songs playing at once during a cutscene" bug occurs again, specifically during the cutscene where the ships are first entering the temporal rift in Sol.

I have exactly the same problem.
But I am using a bluetooth speaker, when I startup STO my sound is being directed to the build in speakers of the laptop.
When I try to disable the laptop speakers, I get no sound at all.
Any help is welcome.
Thanks
EDIT: Found a solution, go to settings and disable voice chat.

Having a very similar issue since the update to Windows 10... Popping sound when first starting, about 20-30% through the initial loading screen...
I however am yet to experience anything that would require me to restart the game, let alone the computer as a whole...
Having a poblem with graphics setting. Recently installed the game to a new computer. First time I logged on everything was fine. Now after subsequent log ins. The display for gameplay is normal as far as the picture goes but all the windows on the screen i.e. chat, minimap, notifications, character abilities, etc. are incredibly small. Resizing under HUD settings has no effect. Under the settings menu for graphics i have tried windows and windows maximized but still the same problem. If i try to choose the fullscreen option I get the following error message:
FATAL ERROR DIRECT 3D driver returned error code
(DXGI_ERRORR_NOT_FOUND) while SetFullscreen status failed changing display mode
Technical Details: 1680 X 1050
I'm too are having a popping sound every other second, Windows 10 and Creative Core3D sound-card.
Turning off/down ambient sound removes the problem for me, but immersion is then "disrupted"/removed.
Please, fix this.
Issue:
I have sound disabled, sometimes when I start STO doing the Cryptic loading screen (about 30-40% done), I get some weird "cracking" noises, kinda sounds like radio static.
My issue is that sounds work... except for when I'm attacking enemies. i can barely hear their weapons at best, mine not at all, unless I have the cam facing my character/ship's face/front
Edit: I can hear the enemies weapons, and my team's weapons, but mine aren't audible at all
Edit 2: Fiddled around with the connections; jack 1 in back lets the sounds of everything but my weapons, jack 2 lets in all but voices, jack 3 does.... something. Front jack lets all work.
I've been having a weird issue with sound on my computer. Everything is fine unless there's a lot of weapons.
If there's a lot of weapons, IE a fleet fight the sound effects for weapons and explosions will stutter, stop and restart. It's like the computer is struggeling to play the "loops" of sound.
This is gonna look very stupid, but I don't know a better way to explain. For example. Imagine when you fire a phaser it sounds like this.
Peeeew.
But in a major fleet fight, if you try and fire the phasers. The sound effect will stutter like mad. So Peeew turns into
Pe-... eee-eee- Peee-eee- peeew.
rofl. It's like the sound abruptly stops and starts over, sometimes from halfway through the sound effect or from the start.
The same thing happens with torpedos, especially in a fleet battle and you use spread.
Same thing with explosions. The sound effect will abruptly stop or stutter.
Also for some reason, when playing the mission a "A Step between stars" or whatever, and only that mission. EVERY sound will stutter like the weapons I just explained. EVERYTHING, the music, voices, even the small effects from pushing buttons and opening doors. But it's only THAT mission.
Changing jack doesn't help, I have voice chat disabled.
For some reason I suspect it's my speakers, since they've fallen to the floor quite a bit.. Especially the bass element. But they sound completly fine in everything else.
My problem was that I wasn't getting any sound. I used the -ignorex64check option which allowed sounds to play but the game was nearly frozen, less than 1 FPS. After wasting time with support I uninstalled my audio drivers (Realtek).
The game works fine with the Microsoft High Definition Audio Device drivers, which Windows 7 defaults to. It does not need the -ignorex64check option. However, my Realtek drivers (64bit) have advantages over the Microsoft drivers, I want to use them.
The game is nearly frozen even with the default Windows 7 sound drivers, even without using -ignorex64check.
Devs: Stop adding to a broken game and fix it instead.
I set the compatibility setting of the GameClient.exe program to Win7 . Note that I am actually using Win7 64-bit. I'm assuming this option only helps with the 64-bit OS.
By default, GameClient.exe is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Star Trek Online_en\Star Trek Online\Live
For the record, none of the advice customer service gave me helped. Go figure.
lately any npc's that are supposed to talk such as Worf or tuvok are not speaking outside of cut scenes.
For example in the stf borg disconnected seven of nine doesn't speak after the initional start up sequence.
However this issue is also in missions such as sphere of influence.

Replaced my Logitech speakers with a more expensive brand that focuses more on how bass and treble is produced. Rather then Logitech who just had a big subwoofer. Seems to have corrected litteraly ALL sound issues. Huh.
I think it could be something with how bass is produced in this game? Seeing when I tried another subwoofer of another brand. All the issues came back.
Sector Space audio is garbled sometimes, like it's either a corrupt file or trying to play more than 1 music file at a time. It does resolve itself eventually. Bug report submitted.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
Music ONLY plays during Sector Space, everywhere else it's just FX sound. No more awesome combat music when fighting the Borg, or no more music during cutscenes or even during normal missions.
How is this atrocity not fixed yet? Seriously, check out some of the posts speaking of this issue:

Based on your original post, I have the exact same problem you had. I also have Logitech speakers with a big subwoofer. I'm trying to fix it without having to buy new ones.
There's one thing that I found out, though. If you turn the ambient slider all the way down in the audio options, it doesn't happen anymore. But, of course, you miss out on the flavour sound. Did this also apply to you?

Had the same problem. I was going to post the fix here but I can see I'm already beaten to it, haha. Will at least confirm that this works. I think it has something to do with AMD's x64 architecture
Hello, I'm new to the game so this may be an easy fix that i've overlooked. My question is this: Is there a hotkey or command in the options menu (other than the voice volume slider), that effects quest dialogue? I logged in yesterday and none of the crew or quest dialogue (audio) is working? I have spent hours searching this topic and have tried everything from loading with Arc/ stand alone game load, drivers updates... ect.. I'm really enjoying the game so far and the voice overs are nice. I don't want to dive to deep into the story line without the "story" :) know what i mean? Any help would be great! Thank you
Environment sound seems to be louder when looking at the source (water in particular, like the fountain on Kobali Prime or the water wall in ESD). When you turn the camera away from it it practically fades completely - even if the PC is literally standing next to it. I can imagine why directional sound is handy, but for a lot of the repeating environmental sounds it seems ... counter-intuitive.

If you are new to the game you might not know.
But only "new content" has voice over lines. The tutorial etc is new, so that has voice overs. But some of the later missions don't. Then you get to some missions that have voice overs again... Then some missions only have SOME voice overs, and some are quiet again.
It's a bit up and down, usually on the newest content has voice overs. Most of the older content doesn't, I belive there is limited voice overs in the game because of a server thingy.
I had an issue with the Arc launcher this morning but got around it by running it in compatibility mode for XP. But when it launched STO there was no sound, none. I tried adjustments and restarting STO. Nothing like that worked. Until I launched the game without going through Arc. I do not know if this correlation equals causality, but it may be something to look at.

In the Starbase 24 queue, when you get close to the starbase, a new music track starts playing but the old one doesn't stop, meaning they overlap each other.
On Nukara Prime, the music track will play when you first beam down, and then will start playing again shortly after, meaning that two copies of the track play at the same time with different timing.
The "Blood of the Ancients" intro cutscene also still has two different music tracks playing at the same time.
Agents of Yesterday, the sound effect for my own captain firing his TOS rifle wasnt working for a few missions. I changed it out, logged in and out, even different mark rifles wasnt fixing it. I can hear my away teams weapons firing next to me, but my weapons, and hand phaser wasnt making a sound. And later in the missions, I think my own ships phaser sounds werent going off either. Stopped playing for tonight. Didnt want to go through all the new content with glitchy weapons.

The issue that I have seen is that when there are two many sounds occurring all at once, it would appear that there are too many voice actors, or too many sound sources occurring, which is causing the audio system to overload in the game...causing massive stuttering seen in the Crystalline Catastrophe STF, or audio issues experienced in almost all STFs when there appears to be a lot of energy weapons, etc, going off.
I have an onboard RealTek audio card, so I cannot modify too many settings on it to see if upping the amount of audio channels to use, etc, could resolve the issue.
Is it possible to enhance the audio engine in the game to allow us to increase/decrease the amount of "voices/channels" the game can support at one time?

Why do you continue ignoring such a crippling bug? Then again, introducing new ships is fine... Way to go.
Lack of sound effects?
