I've been playing this game with NO issues up to this point, yet today I suddenly started having rubber-banding lag and it's suddenly my isp's fault? I don't follow then logic though maybe it's simply due to the holidays being busier and gorging on bandwidth and internet use slowing the entire isp network down?
    .....

And I've been playing STO with no connection issues whatsoever... And probably the only major difference between my connection and yours is... the network? And unless the servers of those other games are located in the same physical location as the STO servers, the fact that you can connect to them has very little meaning, as different locations on the Internet will have different performance metrics...

ISPs and their network load changes over time, (with the logarithmic growth of Netflix and other streaming media is part of the issue, as the Internet was not designed to be a replacement fro broadcast video...)

If its not your ISP, then this would be easy enough to prove by posting the diagnostic results, and it doesn't hurt anything to try... And unless your son in-law has experience with TCP/IP network diagnostics, he can very easily be barking up the wrong tree...

Your 'Trace Route' results is showing 'normal' network latency values, but the 'Net Test' results is showing below normal throughput, (values should be in the 300 - 500 range in the 1st and 3rd columns) which may indicate a connection quality issue...

    Try using the diagnostic command...

    pathping patchserver.crypticstudios.com

... and post the results, as this will show if you are suffering from dropped packets, and where the problem is occuring...

    Nope...

use 'pathping patchserver.crypticstudios.com' from the DOS session command line, just like 'tracert'...

    Hmmm...

Dropped packets everywhere from the get go...

This looks like a problem with your ISP Modem/Gateway... Try rebooting it, as well as the router and see if it improves the problem. If it doesn't, then you will need to contact your ISP about the modem/gateway dropped packet problem, and will need to have a tech look at the unit...

They said that the packet loss on my end was 2% according to their test but would send a tech to check the lines on Thur. I decided to upgrade to the 50mb plan to see if that would help, so going from 5mb to 50mb should improve once this is cleared up. Thanks for the help. The follow is the runs after the 50mb upgrade. "tracert" shows improvement but the "pathping" still shows the same area of problem.

(Though you can run the command 'pathping patchserver.crypticstudios.com' to be absolutely sure...)

It does look like the Cogent backbone is having congestion problems today... The 'pathping' results will likely confirm this..

Now this is a different issue... It looks like your router doesn't like the protocol that 'pathping' uses... First thing that I would do is to try using a wired connection and see if you get the same results. Otherwise, trying to debug ICMP packet processing is a real pain...

The issue is COGENTCO! Not your ISP, computer, or even Cryptic Network equipment as I explained in another thread which I have quoted here.
    zeus16nbs wrote: »
The lag issue will not improve or change for the better until the companies like Cryptic, Netflix, Blizzard, etc. get tired of Cogent and decide to get their equipment/services hosted by "real" Internet Backbone providers that do have massive connections to the Internet. All Cogent does is provide Data Centers and "Building" bandwidth to these companies and then rely totally on the "Free-Peering" connections to get those services to us the internet users via the real "Backbone" and Tier 1 ISP's without paying for that access.

Netflix alone has used up over 60% of the total bandwidth available for the entire USA at times and Cogent thinks they can shove this kind of traffic over the "Free-Peering" links and ports without paying for that massive traffic on the real Tier1 Backbone/ISP's network.

Old saying applies here... You get what you pay for!

So Cryptic, while it has a great and massive link into their Bandwidth/data Center provider (Cogent) it has a serious bottleneck getting to us from Cogent since Cogent does not want to have the necessary internet Backbone connections to handle the traffic load.

Cogent EXPECTS the real internet Backbone/ISP's carriers to provide it for Free!

Cogent step up to the plate and build the necessary connections at your own cost and stop causing major internet LAG!

PWE/Cryptic You can fix this! Stop using Cogent!

I've been having serious problems with this game for nearly 2 months now. From the summer up until that point it worked flawlessly, now I can only get logged in during the daytime on random occasions and when I am in, all I can do is mill about on new Romulus or sit in my spaceship doing nothing. I enter an STF and the ping goes to hell and I have to exit STO all together.

Around about midnightish onwards, it's usually calmed down enough to play but I have a life and I would rather be sleeping at that time.

I've done everything I can this end, I have finely tuned router settings, our ISP will be changing soon and I even moved the modem to within a metre of the telephone master socket and re-networked the house just for good measure.

To me, this seems like either ISP or some other problem between my computer and cryptics servers. It may be aggressive traffic shaping somewhere. The US or EU proxies don't make any difference and are just as problematic.

If there is anything which I am missing then please say. If you neeed more information, please say. I can give as much detail as is needed.

If there is anything that can be done it would be appreciated, the experience for me now is not fun like a game should be but unplayable and depressing. I have invested time and even money in this product and for it to just stop working just as I have gotten more deeply into it only makes me want to uninstall it so I'm not tempted to waste my time trying to connect to something which does not work.

I'm not blaming or being nasty but that is just the position I am in.

I use a wired connection to connect to the router and I run windows 7 64bit.

My current ISP is TalkTalk/Onetel soon to change to Plusnet.

The nettest is absolutely appalling, I don't know what is going on here. It has given me the same sort of results everytime I have used it. Is it supposed to take ages to complete this test? I have traffic shaping switched off on my router and no-one else on the network when I do these tests. Sometimes it just doesn't seem to maintain a stable connection and stops doing anything. I have spent the last few hours waiting and retrying and my patience is now spent. I can watch the traffic movement on my router and it is barely doing anything.

    contacting nettest server..

I honestly don't know if it's something stupid I've done. Like I said running the game during the middle of the night it works perfectly so something is happening somewhere to cause this. However it would please me if someone told me it is my fault and I have just got a setting wrong.

Looks like its time to contact your ISP Tech Support, as you shouldn't be having any DROPPED PACKETS this close to your connection the Internet....

I have been playing STO since launch, and have never had a problem until about 1 month ago. Now, whenever I log in, everthing is stop and go. Just parking at ESD, I can see all the ships flying around me freeze for a second, then move for a few seconds, then freeze again. Also, just logging in and loading takes way too long. Sometimes, it takes several minutes just for my BO ability trays to fill in.

However, I can play any other online game for several hours, and not have a single stutter.

So far, I have updated all my drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled STO, and even increased my speed with my ISP. Still, the problem persists.

I really hope that someone can help me resolve this issue so that I can play STO again.

My ISP is Mediacom. I live on the east coast of the U.S.

Hello, STO always worked fine for me until about a month ago.
There is so much lag the game is unplayable at peaks.

[All of these number were good]

    ISP is COMCAST SE Michigan

Noticed sporadic lagging and server problems today; first full day on this ISP.

The 'Net Test' is actually showing excellent throughput results, so this is not the issue, and implies that the problem may be else where...

Since the 'Trace Route' is failing to complete, you may want to contact Comcast Tech Support, and get their help in diagnosing your connection to the STO Servers..

You should also consider that the problem may be something systemic to your own system... (Have you tried using a different PC/Laptop? and do they both have the same symptoms?)

Thank you for the information, I have the only trouble, that sometimes in a week game is loading and it freezes on Legacy of Romulus screen (like, material files ar reloaded, but nothing more happens).

Other parameters that you wrote in beggining showed a very good results for this game.

    Thx.

Yea whats the point of doing these tests when you never got an answer for the submitted results, much less any fix?

Why not putting your results on the forum, instead of a new rage thread? ;)

EDIT: Don't forget to put a bit more info, like what specs your rig is, temperature, networking, etc etc. Don't forget to add the list of running programs as well; some people tend to let couple of torrents running while playing STO.

    Nerf is OP, plz nerf
That's quite the paradox, how could you nerf nerf when the nerf is nerfed. But how would the nerf be nerfed when the nerf is nerfed? This allows the nerf not to be nerfed since the nerf is nerfed? But if the nerf isn't nerfed, it could still nerf nerfs. But as soon as the nerf is nerfed, the nerf power is lost. So paradoxally it the nerf nerf lost its nerf, while it's still nerfed, which cannot be because the nerf was unable to nerf.

I call it, the Stoutes paradox.
