These pots aren't really useless. They don't share the same CD as apoth unlike regular detection pots. So you can still spam the revelation one and be able to see any sins your level while still being able to IG, etc.

So I tried both pots out a few times. Both seem to increase detection level only. Has anyone got the espionage pots to work?

That skill would be a nightmare for clerics as well as anyone else. Like Quilue said, there's a big difference between going up against a cleric with her shields up and catching one off guard. If another faction bids on you and you decide to wine them, that's essentially losing on purpose and is allowed. truekossy is correct. The +45 str tome offers greater benefits than it's counterpart the +20 dex and +1 crit tome.
