Nope, that wouldn't be a precise answer, and the wise man is always precise in his answers.
As for the answer he's thinking, it's "No, it will not be negative." This is correct. The answer is not negative, but it's not positive either. There is no answer he can say, but as long as he's just thinking it, it's correct.
...so "I can't say it" would be more or less correct?Who needs a sig anyways?0 -
"I can't say it" is also not precise enough and doesn't match the requirements for the answer, as the question could only be answered by 'yes' or 'no', or variants of those.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0

D'uh you got me there....
As for your first question I'll have to agree about using it sometimes.b:chuckleWho needs a sig anyways?0 -

"Will your answer to this question be negative?"
I still don't understand how the answer is valid if it is silent, in his mind, but invalid if stated aloud.
He answered it in his mind. He just did not answer it aloud. But if it's the same answer if he did say it aloud, it should have the same validity.0 -

I think the original riddle was:There is a wise man who can answer any question, but only one question per person. Assume he truly knows everything, even things that should be unanswerable like "how big is the universe". One day, however, a man comes up and asks a question, and the wise man remains silent. He knew the answer, but was unable to say it. What was the question?
So whatever he would say would be a lie.
It's much the same as an old trick of hitting someone in a bar:"If I asked you to kiss me, would your answer be the same than to this question?"Who needs a sig anyways?0 -
Rheic - Dreamweaver wrote: »So whatever he would say would be a lie.
By that logic, whatever he is *thinking* is also a lie.
However, the conditions set forth in the riddle states that he knew the answer in his mind. So whatever answer he has in his mind is not a lie.
How can something be a lie when spoken aloud but be truth when thought in your mind?
EDIT: If the riddle simply said, "He was unable to answer", then I'd accept what Lady Andracil said. However, the riddle explicitly stated that he knew the answer in his mind.0 -
"Will your answer to this question be negative?"
<No, it will not> <-- his thoughts. This is entirely correct - the answer he gives is not negative. Nor is it positive, of course.
"No, it will not" <-- This is if he said it. Now he's lying - His answer WAS negative.
Seriously, stop overthinking it.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -

Yeah, it's me. Don't read to much into it, though; I'm only here for myself now, killin' time and chillin' when need-be. So sue me. Tch...0 -

I have a fairly easy one. Enough for everyone to recover from the brain asplosions from Andracil's puzzle. b:chuckle
A farmer returns from the market, where he bought a goat, a cabbage and a wolf . On the way home he must cross a river. His boat is small and won’t fit more than one of his purchases. He cannot leave the goat alone with the cabbage (because the goat would eat it), nor he can leave the goat alone with the wolf (because the goat would be eaten).
How can the farmer get everything on the other side?0 -

Take Goat first.
Go back empty
Take Cabbage next.
Take Goat on trip back.
Take Wolf next.
Go back empty.
Take Goat.0 -
Goats and Wolves can both swim btw. They don't like it, but they will if they have to. So ha! Just bring the cabbage across, the goat will swim after it because it's hungry, and the wolf will follow cause he wants the goat.
Problem solved, the easy way! Less rowing needed![SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -

Not if it's dangerously cold and raging rapids! Besides, if you wanna really overthink it, why the hell would a farmer want to buy a wolf in the first place? =p0 -

The wolf is a Barbarian, and the goat is a Venomancer with antlers, right?
Barbarians have Swimming Mastery, and the Veno's Swimming Mastery doesn't actually work. So the wolf can swim, but the venomancer has to ride in the boat.
Still working on the cabbage.0 -

...off-topic, I'm surprised this thread's still going. I think I posted this riddle thread after a few others became slow...

Ok, this riddle is one that I've read somewhere before. It's a bit of a tricky one, but we'll give it a whirl and see what happens.
A man who has lived his entire life by himself without ever leaving his home has decided to take a vacation. He picks up his coat, packs his suitcase, turns off all the lights, locks the doors, and goes on his way. However, a day after he leaves, 100 people die. This is not a coincidence. What happened?
Hint: No, he didn't snap and went on a murdering rampage. He merely went on vacation. b:shutup0 -
