I use GIMP. Under the bucketfill there's a "fill with pattern" option.

:)... may ask how u shade? (i'm not artistic at all)

Well uh.. ehh.... You pick a color and then you put the color in the whole thing then you pick a darker color or a lighter color and put it on some of the edges and then blur it out.
Ugh okay I made this one for you -.- in 3 mins,
    tutorialw.png
P.S @ Limeball I didn't make that lineart you colored ^_^ best if you change it before i get yelled at or you.

I wanted to suggest one thing 1 thing that might help: Layers. I did a demonstration here

    001Process.png

I took your original coloring and made it a layer. I took the original lines and overlaid them on top. I had to erase the white so this layer would be mostly transparent. I then built a pallet of shades and highlights. On a new layer I made the shades and highlights. This goes on a new layer so you can adjust feathering, bluring and transparency. Mistakes are easier to erase. You can even throw out your work layer and start over.

    002Compare.png

I didn't do any bluring or transparency here. I myself am a beginner so this really is the blind leading the blind.

There are two free pieces of software that I know of that support layers: Paint Dot Net and Gimp. They both have a learning curve.

Another one that costs money is SAI Paint Tool. This is the tool used in the speedpaint videos that were made up by the PWI fan artist.

If you continue to use Windows Paint, do a search in youtube for tutorials and demonstrations. There's some cool stuff out there.

:/ might just want to download photoshop or gimp. Paint is certainly no good for this sort of thing. I had a Photoshop Q and A a while back and posted it in this forum.

Here's the link to it, for you or anyone else that wants to know how I color my works.

Grippie, it'll help if you don't paint over the lines but just right next to them instead. :P

I'm getting my scanner back tomorrow, so the PW thread will be flooded with peices i've been working on. For now, this is the best cleaning job i've been able to do.

those aren't too bad (: and when you use the paintbucket tool, it fills one whole enclosed area so if there's an opening, it'll color beyond it~ (but you can press "ctrl + z" to undo)

i've been busy working on my comic and dealing with stuff irl, but i'll try to find some free time to color some of the linearts posted in the previous pages ^^

    everything i know i taught myself though and shading isn't one of the things i know how to do well so i usually just do the base colors and stuff xD;

and like it was pointed out earlier, layering = big time help! once you figure out how to do this on gimp or whatever program you use, your coloring will look much better! (there's video tutorials on youtube if you ever need them, btw)

Come to think of it, I made a quick tutorial video on shading/colouring with GIMP but just let it collect dust after I finished it. I guess I might revive it and put it in youtube. o.O

Just a tip for the traditional artists, inking is a whole other art in itself. Some areas, especially curves can be thickened. Get a felt tip pen or a calligraphy felt pen (My cheap cheat from having to use the real calligraphy stuff) and go over your pencil lines, then erase the pencil once the ink is dried (takes seconds). It makes your lines much stronger and cleaner.

I've seen some sketches in this forum that have thick, sometimes tapered, sharp, precise lines in them. I've often wondered if any of them were done using a vector drawing program.

Have you ever tried vector software like Illustrator or Corel Draw?

I just downloaded a free vector graphics program - Inkscape. I was able to do some coloring fairly rapidly. I think once I finish some of the tutorials i would be able to shade and highlight quickly as well.

    . . .

Nice. The coloring looks straighter than the lines in some places.

    Did you use a tablet?

Omg yay, someone coloured the random veno, I thought no one would rofl.

I've never really tried any other digitial programs to date than GIMP. It took me long enough to grasp hold of the basic concepts there of layering and ect lol. I'm not a huge fan of digitial programs, but to some extent I need them. I'll proably give inkscape a go.
