Are there certain powers you or your group avoids during certain fights because it causesperformance issues?
• Does it involve one class? • A combo of classes using powers? • Is it during specific times in a fight?
We want to know!
We have heard concerns and stories in the past about players avoiding using certain powers during certain fights. We are looking for detailed info on the top 5-10 of these to help us identify and prioritize power fixing needs. This thread is just to share specific examples. Discussions regarding those powers or other tangential conversations will make it more challenging for us to locate the info at this time so please refrain from such discussions and debates here.
Permabubble: Had performance issues... Cryptic Response: Nerfed Commander's Strike: Caused Minor Lag... Cryptic Response: Nerfed Murderous Flames: Did lots of damage, caused some to lag... Cryptic Response: Nerfed Bond of Virtue: Caused lag... Cryptic Response: Nerfed
Just saying...
Also Divine protector is still laggy to this day, So I'd start there.
I'm a theorycrafter, that means I can answer fairly deep questions with scientific theory, mathematical proof, and some guessing. Ask me stuff!
I have had some issues with Fury SWs (possibly because of the Creeping Death capstone), but my last computer was basically a glorified toaster with a keyboard.
FBI - as a CW I avoid using Icy Terrain going up the mountain as it's harder to see the red splat zones when icy terrain is on the ground. Similar concern in the initial phase of MSVA as its almost impossible to differentiate between a CW power and some under-informed adventurer dropping icy in the middle of the room.
Ed: Language edited. Please keep it civil, also when referring to theoretical players.
I do main a CW though, and like others, I avoid Icy Terrain. It's a really good power, but it makes seeing red zones a pain (which is currently a major pain anyway) and can exacerbate frame rate issues (namely when a lot of players/enemies are around). I even avoid it solo. I also avoid Sudden Storm because the execution time is too slow to catch enemies running up to eat your face along with its on-again-off-again granting of some of your passives / weapon enchants to enemies.

If u refer to help players to not get lag when doing huge raids groups like Dragon Flight, Heralds Run( Well of Dragon), ndemo/edemo, Tiamant, Kos we might aswell recommend it,
these are the most requested i read that were asked to turn off or use intead DC - no astral seal, and no aa(idk why players ask me to not use aa), in tiamant recently a player recommend not to heal but use astral shield instead to protect players(this change to astral shield also benefited me a lot on tiamant runs also most dps players are going for a good amount of lifesteal chance in order to heal themselves)
OP - if op has the prism feat from justice tree, player recommend they dont use daily power, looks like the prism healing over time apllies to all players near him causing some server lag
GF - not use knight valor it apllies barries to so many player its lag fest i hear if gf use kv in heralds run their screen freezes
HR - carefful attack and slayer mark were recommended not to use
CW - in rd player told me to avoid using icy terrain because it was causing lag on ship heroic aswell, i only use it after hati in FBI, or on dailies quest
Astral seal: Also nerfed. Maybe also Knight's Valor?
This was actually an issue with Fire of the Gods because of the number of calculations with the frequency of heals from Astral Seal and the calculations involved. The response was to nerf the amount of heals from Astral Seal.
A similar issue with the paly came up then they also nerfed Fire of the Gods. In that regard healer dc's got punished twice for the same problem because the first nerf was to address the symptom.
Speaking personally Icy Terrain kills my graphics.

Here comes the can of worms - smoke bomb.
I avoid it like the plague. The particle effect causes lag and for my build it doesn't work. It's not worth it.
I would cite the case where shortly after Tiamat came out with Tyranny of Dragons there were the "25 of one class" runs being tested, and having 4-20 TRs drop a smoke bomb at once made the screen freeze for me. This also can occur on "5 of a kind" epic runs, or "10 of a kind" on a side in Demogorgon.
One smoke bomb may not be much, but it adds up. When you get a TR on the team that drops a smoke bomb every single time it resets the timer you notice it.
No, it's not my graphics card. No, It's not my connection. No, it's not an old monitor unable to keep up. No, it's not the Pally or the Cleric or the Warlock you'd like to point out.
Yes, my main is a TR.

Yes, I have always had issues with icy terrain in any "closed" instance, but especially bad in Biggrin's Tomb and the Tiamat battle. And to a certain extent it happens in Well of Dragons during the Herald fights, lowering my fps to basically 0. Ice storm can also do it too, but not to the extent that icy terrain does it. It is why I have no points in icy terrain on either of my cws, as I can not use it, so why waste points in the power. And it makes no difference how I have my graphics set, it happens on all settings, and has happened on 3 different pcs. Now could my internet connection have a part of the issue, yes, but I doubt it is all the issue.

SW Pillar of Power can have similar effect as icy terrain making red markings hard to see
as a hr who uses careful attack and slayers mark and longstriders I've never seen performance issues associated with these things. I've never had anyone ask me not to use them because of performance issues. to the contrary I've been asked to use slayers mark adn longstriders explicitly on more than one occasion. I haven't seen anything being asked specifically not to use since prism and astral shield were a problem. I haven't seen any issues along those lines since those two things. nothing game breaking. no times where lag was bringing things to a stop. it all looks pretty good as far as powers causing problems like that imo.

I run a CW as my main... I cant say icy terrain causes any performance issues for me... but I am also running pretty beefy machine. I do agree that the visual of it can make spotting red areas harder. As for my GF... same thing with knights valor... no performance issues on my end.
There is a difference between player performance and machine performance. The only minor issue with Icy Terrain is that it will cover red areas and SOME players have issues with that. I have yet to see ANY REAL machine performance issues with using IT.
IMO most of the performance issues are from the players older video cards/ and or computers in general. I play a HR as a main and used to play on a ASUS ROG 750jz, It had an Nvidea 860m card which was decent 4 years ago. When I came back to Neverwinter this past December I hate huge performance issues. Raiding in MSVA my screen was almost always whited out. Hitting esc every other skill to clear etc etc. I tried changing all the settings that I could and still to no avail it would white out a few times a fight. I finally came across this command "/reduce_mip 1" and after I used it I had zero performance issues with any skill or any number of classes in the raids.
Last month I upgraded to a new desktop system which I am sporting a Nvidea 1080ti card and I have had to make zero changes to my ingame graphics or / commands, It runs like a dream. I know everyone can not afford a new system but it makes no sense to "nerf" an ability because people are using "old" stuff either.
The only complaint I have gotten from anyone is when I would use Split the Sky skill, they said it would cause them horrible white outs/ lag.
DC: NO astral seal during tiamat HR: No Careful Attack/Longstrider's Shot OP: No Dalies = No prism GF: Knight's Valor causes lag sometimes
I used to game on a brick but now I've upgraded to a better system since I wasn't able to play for an entire month in May this past year due to device removed client crashes. I don't have to adjust anything at any time off full graphics on my new laptop.
Relmyna - AC/DC Righteous + Haste| Nadine - CW MoF (working on it)|Buffy - GF SM Tact| Hrist - Justice Tankadin|Healadin (Wannabe Tank)| Lena -MI Sabo TR (Farmer) | Jeska - GWF SM Destroyer (Farmer) | Maggie - HR PF Trapper (Wannabe DPS)

I'll never retrace my steps.
I can think of two powers that have caused issue from time to time.
GWF - slam daily TR - daggers poking through the floor (actual encounter name is path of bades?)
In both cases, it is an area-of-effect that with other AOE effects can cause the game to really slow down.
Places I've seen both slam and Path of Blades(?) induce crawling/freeze frame lag are Tiamat, Svardborg, Demogorgon, Malabog's Castle, and Epic Cragmire Crypt.
In all the cases above, there are additional area of effect/display calculations going on. Throw in a Slam or Path of Blades.. a tipping point can be reached and everything slows down.
dc's geas that applied in divinity mod - lag so hard, that boss can't even move
HR's slayer mark cause sometimes lags.

I don't generally have performance issues in combat unless there are many players present (say greater than 10). So situations like Tiamat, Heralds, SH Dragonflight, SH Marauders, occasionally Demonic HEs. I've done a 5-player Marauders and performance was a lot smoother than when there are 20+ players. You can also get a mob like this on lowbie ToD dragon HEs but the dragon doesn't last long enough to really notice performance going south (and some of the mob consists of lowbie players with limited powers anyway).
I do find Knight's Valor problematic even in non-combat zones (people who NEVER turn it off, grrrr).
I have the usual no-no list of things not to do out of courtesy or because people will yell at you: DC Astral Seal, HR Careful Attack, any OP dailies w/Prism feated, CW Icy Terrain.
I keep the max particles in my graphics settings really low based on it making an enormous difference between old Spellplague being a slideshow and not, which would possibly help with personal issues like Smoke Bomb (which sounds like an individual machine problem, not an overall one).

My main is a CW and I can NOT confirm Icy Terrain causing lags!
But I can confirm that Icy Terrain covers red areas that indicate enemy's AoE attacks.

I used to see some performance issues with certain powers in the past - DCs were for example asked not to use Astral Seal during the dragon fights in WoD or Tiamat, but quite frankly, lag-causing powers are simply not a significant issue at this time.
People may also be reluctant to point to specific powers, because such complaints have in the past sometimes led to the powers being "nerfed", for example by reducing the number of targets they affect. I cannot speak for everyone else, but personally I prefer a minor chance of lag in a crowded situation to a 50% reduction in the effectiveness of some of the powers.
So, my opinion is that the devs should focus on other things - I really don't see lag-causing powers being worthy of much attention.
Hoping for improvements...

When it comes to Herald runs, I think whenever you have 40 people hammering at the same target it is going to cause issues. Personally I think reducing the max number of people in WoD instance to 30 would help a great deal, but then again maybe it is one of those ideas someone thinks is great but is actually terrible.
On something I do have experience with recently, Trans Thunderhead. I recently had to sell this, I use a Dual Core Ultrabook with a dedicated gfx card but when this enchant chain procced in places like eToS it could reduce my framerate to single digits very briefly for a few seconds.
I wish I knew the power(s) to identify for my issue. When I go to a demonic HE with a lot of players present, after the fight is over my client will often stop displaying certain effects. For example, if I'm in Dread Ring, the borders around Infernal Rifts won't display. When I cast Singularity, it will work but won't be visible. Changing characters doesn't fix it, either: I have to restart the client. It only happens if a lot of players are laying down massive amounts of effects in the demonic HE.

I play an HR and an SW. The only power that has given me issues is careful attack, mostly in Svardborg and Tiamat, not so much in HE, even very large ones. I'm pretty sure it was CA because in some cases I was the only HR and I could almost toggle my issues on/off by applying CA or waiting for it to end. Never had any issue with Longstrider or Gushing Wound.
Le-Shan: HR level 80 (main)
Born of Black Wind: SW Level 80
Careful attack does cause lag as well as slashers mark and gunshing wound - however it is barely noticeable or not at all in 5 man party (depends if someone else is using some power that can cause minor instance response delay) but it is in raids. Another thing that I dont think anyone mentioned yet is smolder in renegade build for CW while fighting large number of mobs at once.

I've started avoiding the TR's Bloodbath when fighting demons in the various Defending the Sword Coast tasks for Bruenor. Sucks when they heal to full when it is used.
I'm not looking for forgiveness, and I'm way past asking permission. Earth just lost her best defender, so we're here to fight. And if you want to stand in our way, we'll fight you too.

I was unable to play with a GF using KV while playing my Warlock. I would freeze, be unable to use encounters, and never knew where on the map I was!
As a GF I was able to use it with no issues.
I got a new pc, it's much better but could def use a look over!!
