Well there aren't really sets available on AH but once you reach lvl 70 and start running the dungeons, I'd go for the Assault set, which has plenty of ArP and Crit. Neck and Belt you'd have to decide which set is best for you if you want the artifact gear, while Jewellcrafting offers Power/Recovery, Power/ArP and HP/Regen rings at max lvl. Same for crafted belts and necks.

On your way to level 70, just choose the gear with the most HP attributes and you'll be fine - I think. Like lirithiel said, Assault set is good for your T1 set - though you could also take a look at the Raid set since it gives Recovery which is useful for Archery.

My Recovery is over 3k with the Assault set. IIRC the Raid set is light on both ArP and Power. IMO both sets seem to favour ranged over melee as I can't remember seeing much if any Deflect on even the T2 gear. The Burning Duelist set has ample Deflect on it but that is pvp gear.
Oh something else I wanted to ask: Would stacking Deflect work for Archery? Defence just seems to do absolutely nothing useful in Mod 6. If I get hit I'm dead regardless. I hear tanks with 8k Defence are getting one-shot.

Next newbie question... what are the soft/hard caps, and what should I be looking at maxing, stat-wise?

There are no longer soft/hard caps for stats. However, more than 60% Resistance Ignored (ArP) is wasted in pve. The rest is all about what stats you want to stack according to your build. For example I play a Combat Advantage/Crit build so I stack those two stats where I can. Every stat is 400 points per percentage except Recovery which is 200:1.

well, I would say yes. It seems a good way to circumvent the armor penetration buff the mobs were given this mod. It also seems to be the defensive stat the devs are pushing on us.
I actually stacked a fair bit of deflect on my GF tank for that reason (and to trigger fey thistle). She's hard as coffin nails. That's for a different forum, though.
I'm at 40% on my SW Archer and it's definitely a step up from the 20% deflect I had before the patch that fixed deflect and broke AotS. I have a couple of stray radiants slotted that I'm tempted to remove in favor of silvery enchants, and see how I can push it without sacrificing offense. Shooting for around 50% pre Lone Wolf.
I made it to 70! So far, so good... though the going is much easier duo with a pally than it is solo (I'm still getting the hang of soloing stuff and die quite a bit). A few more questions...
How does one start the Assault armour exactly? I'm currently working on the quests in Spinward Rise to get my artifact main hand but will have that all sorted in a couple of days.
What artifacts should I aim for? I currently have the Seldarine set which has saved my HAMSTER many times and have no intention of giving that up due to my general squishiness. I also have the Lantern of Revelation and the merchant thingy, but I'm wondering if I should ditch the merchant in favour of something else. I have 2 slots to fill and I'm fine with buying stuff in the auction house if that's what needs to be done.
Also, from reading the forums I gather that having one orange level companion gives you an extra 15% of the stats of your currently summoned companion. I have the cat as my summoned companion for grouping purposes (equipped with the Avenger gear from Sword Coast Adventures) and the war dog for soloing. I'd like to add a healer into the mix as a soloing alternative as well, but I'm not sure which to get. Then one of these could be upgraded to orange. What companions are all of you experienced archers running with?
Thanks again for all the help... Neverwinter is a very different game from Everquest and it's a big learning curve!

Gz on making it to 70! Now comes crunch time on whether you can manage it stick it out through all this mess.
For artifacts it really depends on your playstyle and what stats you need. Seldarine set is fine for Archer, continue stacking Deflect as your main defensive stat along with HP. Defence is screwy this Mod. Lantern is fine as well and yeah the Catalogue isn't very good but I would keep it in my inventory for the vendor function. If you do pvp I'd suggest the Vanguard's Banner (Power/HP/Lifesteal).
Artifact stats I would avoid just off the top of my head: Control Bonus, Control Resist (unless you pvp in which case both are handy), AP Gain, Stamina Regen, Movement and Regen. Press Control-J in-game and go to Artifact tabs and see all the ones on offer.
Assault set to obtainable through T1 dungeons (boots, arms, helm). The armor you buy from PE Market vendor, although I hear armor may drop in T1s off bosses.
For companions I don't worry about healers. For solo questing I use Wild Hunt Rider (defender). His active bonus also boosts damage. All my companions boost damage except my Ioun Stone of Might, which gives extra stamina.
Our pain is self chosen.

Wheel of elements. I just never realized how awesome this artifact was till I got, and its one of the cheapests on the AH.
It has a 120 sec cooldown even at green, the fire buff gives you 30% more damage, or if youre in trouble you can aim one of the defensive buffs on yourself, and of course party members can collect the buffs. Also it has power + HP, which is always good.
For other artifacts anything with combat advantage is a good idea. (as an archer you should be slotting aspect of the pack).
This thread has made my dust off my own Archer who I gave up on after levelling to 61 in Drowned Shores. Burned my free respec, bought him some cheap M6 blues on the AH, and took him for a spin. It's ridiculously more challenging than my Pally but still fun.
Not sure I would have known what gear to get and what feats/boons etc. to pick without the experience from my Pally, mind. M6 is a whole new ballgame.

You probably didn't play the HR much so I'm guessing the Eternal gear from ToD campaign store is out of the question. Had I known about that gear from the start things would have gone a lot smoother - I only got it lvl 65 but the big issue after that was surviving the lag more than anything else.
It's just about adjusting playstyle more than anything else and the defensive/healing boons really help, as does a tanking companion, or a healer if you so wish. Although once you get Cordon of Arrows its plain sailing for the most part. I'm so grateful for that encounter. Works very well with Rain of Arrows.

man the eternal gear.... I've never been so badly eviscerated so constantly as I was wearing that set. It was like wearing a paper sack full of angry bees.
CoA plus RoA = a quick end to whatever was standing there before. Fighting the archons in the last CTA, on that second section of the bridge I'd drop that combo and they didn't even get to finish saying "BURN WITH ME!!!". They consistently got as far as "BURRN!" before they disintegrated and the voiceover cut out.
I also use a Cockatrice and the Ioun Stone of Allure, so whatever attacks me has a decent chance of being slowed or paralyzed in addition to the brief hold CoA gives.

Actually I rolled him as soon as the HR was released and for a while he was my main. He had a T2 set and most of the boons. I just set him aside after a not so great experience at the start of Mod 6 and focussed on my Pally.
I'm lucky enough to have the War Dog companion which is freaking awesome for running a CA build as he regularly prones targets. Pretty durable and not too shabby at holding aggro either. Should I ever raise enough AD he will be my first choice to upgrading.
Can't wait until I hit 65 and can get CoA. The lairs in Reclamation Rock are hard work without it. I do a lot of running away.

I'm sort of bummed that I took the War Dog on my Combat HR. She uses it for solo questing and the prone is amazing idd. If you kit it out with Loyal Defender gear it may even be better with regards to threat generation, but I stacked Recovery and HP from the T1 Assault/Raid gear. My active bonus isn't great but I would have loved to use the War Dog on my Archer, who runs a CA build.

I've managed to afford one piece of Loyal Defender so far and I think it has made an appreciable difference. If I wasn't so AD poor I'd definitely grab the other two. I'm set up to minimise my own threat and maximise his - it's a work in progress but is OK if I'm careful enough with range and positioning. LoS has become my new best friend.
For the Rangers running a CA build, what equipment, feats etc. are you using to boost your CA?

Companions - Blink Dog, Intellect Devourer
Artifacts - Lantern, TR Sigil, Heart of the Blue Dragon, iirc Kessell's Spheres (browse them in collection interface to see all)
one of the IWD boons
Due to diminishing returns, you only need a few sources, really.

Aspect of the Pack, Charisma stat, Lantern of Revelation, Heart of the Blue Dragon, AotP feature on OH, CA stat boost on OH. My CA rating is 1900 plus, which equates to 9.6% bonus CA damage. I don't use the Blink Dog or the Intellect Devourer because I don't have space for either atm. The Lathander set helps too as the Greater Lathander Belt now gives +Wis/Cha which is ideal for my build. The only thing I want to change are the ability scores at the start to get more Cha and less Str.

Not based on my own testing, but according to other people, "special" stats like stamina and CA still drop off the same as they used to. It's only the core stats that got adjusted.
I know. I do actually appreciate the lengths hustin1 went to to both make his toon playable and prove a point about defense not being all that great this mod. But yes, that was funny.
I took my pve archer to pvp last night. And I lived!
1 on 1 we're pretty much cannon fodder but playing smart we're a valuable asset to the team. Getting up on the higher level and raining hell on node contestors from above, bringing their HP down bellow 20% before they realized whats going on and then other memmbers finished them off. Or providing air support to the team while the'yre fighting on a nod, or running all the to the other side of the map and cap a node while teh enemy team is busy somewhere else. Basicaly, stay up and get down only to cap or if you get ni trouble.
I had a lot of fun running a Skirmishers Gambit archery build for most of the first of mod 6. You have to drop Bottomless quiver and rising focus to make it work, but hey if you like BIG orange numbers its fun.
It yielded on average a 10% dps increase for me over the all archery feats spec.
With Broadhead arrows and stillness of the forest my crit cance was 70% with the 10% reduction from gambit.
Whatever you crit chance is now add 25% for stillness then take away 10% and you'll see what yours would be with this spec.
I wanted to mention this here in the proper thread since I had mentioned it in a trapper thread .
I had great results with this spec at 2500 ilvl (all I did was stack crit). I'm only 3k ilvl now and recently specked back into trapper, but I really enjoyed this gambit spec.

I'd have to drop more than that if I wanted to take full advantage. I'd need another 5 points, and I happen to really like hasty retreat. The question is: is 50% more crit severity worth it on top of what I have already (erinyes/ P. vorpal), given it will cost me 30% encounter cooldown speed and the ability to move 25% faster in combat. I'll say this, you've got me on the PTS this morning.
