You definitely have to be on your toes if you don't have a GF protecting you.
That'll probably depend on the quality of the GF. I've played a few epic skirmishes with my GF and it's clear a) I'm not very good, b) I don't have enough HP and c) I could really do with a healer in a party. Hopefuly there's an element of practice involved and I just need to learn the timing because I'm getting one shot by the boss if I drop my shield to use a skill or potion at certain points.
In terms of the rewards, Rank 5's, gold and scrolls as well.
I felt like a spectator in the regular version as everything melted under all the dps. I don't know that I'll bother with it again.

There is a mechanic to he oneshot. With range players he will do the oneshot after the fireball. With all melee he will do it right after breathig fire. You just have to use your shield for this attack.
Tank him with you back to the wall, so the other members of your team dont die in his AoE. If you are the last one standing you can survive, take pots etc., by runnig circles around him. I survived this way, when my group died and I had to solo him for the last 30% (GWF).
There are too many players with poor survivability, especially during skirmish hour, who are attempting the epic skirmish.
Sometimes they don't have a soulforge enchantment.
The final boss fight (on epic) is not a dps race. High dps is not required. High survivability is more important than dps. On my debuff DC (high prophet) and with a well-geared GF, we steadily two-manned the boss from 50% boss health to death, after all squishes died. A GF can make the fight very easy, but I have also seen some fantastic GWF who can also hold agro, perhaps by doing high dps?
CW's who do not use shield, especially when there is no GF or DC, can be very disappointing.
On my pve CW, with shield on mastery, and with a decent DC, I was able to two-man the boss from 20% boss health to death. Could not have done it without shield and without staying near the boss, inside the DC's circles.
The other CW died, of course, because he was not using shield and because he was dpsing from range, instead of staying near the boss and near the DC.
Because of survivability concerns, I have not yet taken my pve HR into the epic skirmish. But when he does, he will be staying near the boss and near the DC, even if there is a GF or super GWF.
There are no red circles of fire on the ground to avoid if everyone stays very near the boss.
On my DC, I have been using "break the spirit" to reduce damage from boss attacks, but not sure if it actually helps.

Lucky you that can count on a DC. My fellow guildies hadn´t unlocked the skirmish so I had to queue and only once got a DC in party.
Anyway best team probably is: GF, DC, Temptation Warlock and 2 HRs. GFs takes aggro, everybody else behind boss and close. DC protects the GF, SW heals and the two HRs pop up Fox´s Cunning when the boss raises his arm while DPSing him down the rest of the time.
Le-Shan: HR level 80 (main)
Born of Black Wind: SW Level 80
I don't know anything about SW healing abilities, but with two DC's, you can have almost 100% uptime on blue astral shield and frequent uptime of Hallowed Ground. Of course, astral shield only helps players who stay inside the astral circle. Many ranged players will not stay inside the circle. Even melee players sometimes go outside the circle.
Two HR's seems like a good idea IF they are both able to correctly alternate use of fox cunning while fighting. It's easy to see when astral shield expires because the blue/yellow circle disappears. But seeing the expiration of fox cunning will require more careful attention. Personally, I think it would be a little difficult for me to time it right on my HR.
I enjoy doing the skirmish on my DC IF there is a good tank in the party.
If there is no tank, then I would rather play my CW and just try to dps boss as fast as possible, since there is a good chance the other ranged dps classes will die, and then who kill the boss?
Yes I was a HAMSTER raider.
I finished Naxxramas while you didn't even set foot in it. I was present when my Hunter friend got the first legendary bow on the server from Sunwell.
It made for the most memorable experiences in a game, EVER. It is quite natural for somebody like myself to desire to replicate them.
Problem?!?
Also Heroic, elite raiding (i.e. progression raiding) =/= nab, LFR raiding. LFR still necessary so people like you can see content.
LOL did I not? you might want to get your facts right before you go shouting your mouth off sport , I didn't set foot in Naxxramas? I subbed to WoW from the 2nd of April 2005 right the way up to mists , I ran every single vanilla raid from Zul'Gurub right up to Naxxramas thank you very much lmfao (also nice try at childish insults but raidfinder didn't exist when I ran the vanilla content :rolleyes: ) , like I said ,it is hardly some elite fraternity , been there done that if I want more of the same i.e a second full time job several days a week then I will resub in November when Warlords of Draenor is released .
I won't expect a game that is clearly not aimed at raiders to start churning out content for them , apart from anything else the development team is clearly not big enough to handle that kind of content, try to understand Neverwinter is not that kind of game ,it is a casual game and that is the way it will always be ,if you cannot come to terms with that then there really isn't much else I can say to convince you .
you do not have to have a gf to do this skirmish... i've completed it with so many different setups, one was a gwf, two tr's and two dc's, one was a gwf, two cw's, and two tr's, (which if you ask some people on this forums you shouldnt take a tr, which is just completely false) if you are smart and know how to get out of red circles, and move from in front of him you will be just fine. (at one point me (tr) and the gwf had to duo the boss because the others had died and we did so just fine. it actually made it fun
my third trip i got the gem out of the second chest (the zen key chest), and now have my shiny new dagger all ready for double refinement weekend
I ran every single vanilla raid from Zul'Gurub right up to Naxxrama
Dude it's an MMO. It has to have content for everyone. Just like it has PvP with a leaderboard in a D&D game.
There's nothing wrong if this game releases raiding. It won't shift focus.
And if you wanna know why it should, it's because combat mechanics here make for a more involved and fun experience. It could be the next best thing in an MMO if they did it properly, with great storyline, amazing bosses and just 1 raid/module with 2 difficulties.
Would be all that is required to give the game additional longevity. You should understand better than others how epic scale content could improve the game.
That is just a difference of opinion. Most players I know who have have experienced raiding, do not wish to replicate such a thing again. You may think it is a "memorable" experience, some/most other do not.
pointsman, i just want the game to have something to do for the hardcore PvEr. Yes I prefer great gear being gated behind raiding/anything that takes skill&dedication, because I know I can do it. The present alternative of grinding CN/skirmish a billion times/playing AH etc. does not suit my tastes. Farming a very difficult raid would be much better for me.
grimah, yes. I agree. Some people failed at raiding and they remained with a bad taste in their mouth. Others just got burned out due to overfarming and sometimes months without new content. Raiding still remains the most memorable PvE experience for me however. Downing a boss that you worked on and wiped on for 2 weeks with another 24 people is incredibly rewarding and cannot compare with what in Neverwinter yet.
I understand raiding is not for everybody; nobody should be forced into it. Gating gear behind walls and walls of RNG, dailies and more RNG, with some very easy fights is just lame though.

Randomness is a great thing When I fail to get a skirmish group together in my guild ("Guild Medieval") or on the Legit channel, I just queue for a random PUG, and half of the time I seem to end up in a group with another DC....meaning a quick switching of powers is in order.
Could be fun to try the skirmish with 5 DCs
Hoping for improvements...

The timing for Fox is fairly easy, depending on your cooldown. The fire blast that spreads out from him does not seem to hit too hard, popping a pot after it is normally plenty to be able to basically ignore it. The dangerous attacks are the dagger throw and the fireball, the fireball gives you a red circle to dodge, and it seems to be an instant kill effect, it even kills me just after raise when I should be immune to damage. You want to dodge that circle early, as soon as you see it as there can be a bit of lag and a .5 sec delay will kill you. Also don't go into the flames to revive someone thats down, you will also die.
The dagger throw is done after he does one of the other attacks. Fox lets you ignore the next attack that would hit you so I normally trigger it after he does that area burst centered on him or after he breaths. If you have 2 HR you can have them pick one of the attacks and trigger their Fox after that attack. Its a fairly short buff but it can be a lifesaver.
Even if you can't control the drakes completely, just keeping them busy while the rest of the group burns down the boss can help a lot. The time that the drakes are being slowly killed is time that the rest of the group is not being 1 shotted by a bit of bad timing.

I've been consistently doing 14 runs a day and here are the results:
Day 2:
* 1 Dragon Gem
* 1 Draconic Hood
* 1 Set of Draconic Axes
* 1 Greater Glyph
Day 3:
* 1 Dragon Gem
* 1 Greater Glyph
Day 4:
* 1 Draconic Hood
* 1 Set of Draconic Axes
Last 2 days (especially this day) were really disappointing. Not sure whether I got really lucky first couple of days or if I got pretty unlucky the other two
The enemes have way to much damage in proportion. Buff health, throw in some more diverse groups, but if a regular enemy can one hit kill you with his regular attack, thats stupid.
AOEs are kinda fun too, given how laggy NW is and that the red circle often does not reflect the actual area the skill will affect.
And the boss..well, dies rather fast, most attacks do miniscule damage, but he can one hit kill you whenever you wants. And the fireball is even more ridiculous. Instant death, soul forged, instant death before i can move, revive by player, instant death before i can move.
Without the over the top damage, the epic version would be way to easy. This way it's a joke, it does not really require skill, just a good enough connection and computer so that you can actually dodge the AOEs. The regular version is way to easy for a level 60 skirmish.
Positive point: It has nice visuals and is fast, in both versions.

BTW, I used to die like that in GG PvP sometimes recently, die from some Ice Knife or Killing Flames major hit->revived->die->revived->die etc. Sometimes I died 4 times in a row with every death count toward statistics.

Overall I think fun to retry a few times or get it right at the first. Haven't gotten anything useful yet after like 7 runs. Aside for that draconic grimore for my warlock

Today, after another 14 successful runs, I got literally nothing _-_ So I basically went from 5 epic rewards on day 1 to... nothing on day 5.
Some interesting observation: I've seen set jewelry to drop only in normal version. Both rings and neck dropped from some of the packs at the ambush stage. And considering I ran more then 40 epics and only 20(+-5) normals, they either don't drop in epic version or this is kinda new stupidity level of RNG.
M6 almost drains your soul given how boring it is. (c) joocycuzzzzzz
I got a new reward for a change, sadly it was only 1,000 AD. At least I can laugh about it .
Edit: Huh what do you know, I mock the rewards and a gem turns up in the next run. 20 hours to see whether this moment of elation (perhaps relief would be a better term) turns into disappointment.
As a GF I'm hoping for Honor of the Golden Dragon (Crushing Surge) but won't be too upset with Golden Dragon's Courage (Tide of Iron) depending on what +10% stamina actually translates too. I used to use Cleave before mod 4 so even Audacity of the Golden Dragon might not be that much of a disappointment. We'll see.
I did it about 25 times today, and every time there was a party wipe at the final boss. Even once when we had a GF, sadly. Once, the team tried 7 times before giving up.
Did not get any Dragon Gems, but I did get one Draconic Cowl. Only had one unbound drop from the boss and it was an Infernal set piece. (I think it was CW offhand, not sure.)
Do you get anything worthy besides rank 5 draconic enchantment out of that regular chest you get as a reward for running skirmish?
So far I've gotten from running epic skirmish and opening only regular chest: 2 BoP draconic helmets (1 BoE from the boss), 1 dragon gem, 2 dragon bones. Also rolled Barbaric Ring of the Shore in the normal skirmish (nothing but R4's from the chest tho).

Yeah I've just run it 4 times since my last post. Got two gems (bought one for 600 peridots before I got these - . -), rank 5 and then head piece.

I just got the purple orb and my dragon gem from the free chest. The keyed chest has provided me with nothing other than the useless rank 5 and identify scroll junk. Stick with normal the version and stick with the free chest
Belt Sash of Charisma droped first run on epic skirmish. It dropped from boss and we all need, i got itGDN_)) (roll:74), sold for 1.4 mil already. Did skirmish about 50 or more times, never drops again. From normal chest i got 2 dragon gems and other not worth mentioning enchants. From epic chest (for the key) only 1 dragon gem. Thats it.
I did epic dungeon also about 50 times...didnt get anything worth from boss,chest or epic chest. So is it a really that it is better to play just skirmish because i didnt get nothing from dungeon (i think i get chest BOP every time i go)or i was just lucky in skirmish, i dont know that, seems so....

You are lucky. Did both epic and normal about 20 times each. Just got rank 5 and bop helmet. No gem even in key chest.

I haven't gotten anything of note in epic SoT after a week of running it and was wondering where the ...of the Shore jewelry dropped. First normal skirmish I did it dropped from the Ambush and has been dropping in spurts. I finally got my hands on a Plated Band of Constitution but the funny thing is it dropped from the boss and I got it straight away in my inventory without having rolled on it. Gotten a few gems in both chests and the Treatise once in two weeks of running the skirmish now.
Our pain is self chosen.
The most important thing in life is to be yourself. Unless you can be Batman. Always be Batman.
The Shore jewelry drops in the normal skirmish, the ambush section. Rough guess would be 1/7 runs. You're lucky to get the Treatise...I was thinking it was a myth

I've done well over 200 runs and I haven't seen anything drop...for anyone...not once. Wait..that's wrong...1 ring and 1 belt thus far. This is far from an exaggeration... I've had the campaign unlocked for roughly a week and a half now and have run 10-20 skirmishes a day, every day, for at least 10 days now. What the hell am I doing wrong? I open both chests...have keys etc etc... nothing drops...ever...for anyone that i know, or play with...hell, my guild was just talking about this and we have close to 50 active members....not a single person has gotten anything in this dungeon...we all have well over 13k gs and have been farming the epic version of SoT.

I just got the purple orb and my dragon gem from the free chest. The keyed chest has provided me with nothing other than the useless rank 5 and identify scroll junk. Stick with normal the version and stick with the free chest
Idk what's wrong with the Epic version, I've done 30+ runs, got nothing else than 2 Draconic Helm.
Done 40+ Normal runs, 4 Greatswords, 2 Gems, 1 Infernal Helm, and 6 Glyphs ...
