I find it disturbing that to get my tiger mount to "go" i smack his hind leg, haunch.. isn't this a kin to a portrayal of animal cruelty... Why can't you ride the tiger mount like the horse mounts
While I am no fan of animal cruelty, I would suggest the following idea for reconciling the "rodeo" animation with your morals:
The tiger mount is a preternaturally huge kitty covered by a thick hide and an incredible amount of muscle tissue. Your slap on its hindquarters is not painful.
OP, nothing in that animation is different than riding a real horse. Please look up riding crops, and spurs. I love animals, I would never do anything to hurt them, but before I was disabled when I could go out riding I would use both in certain situations. Both can give you more control which actually keeps both you and the horse safer. I hope this helps you understand the whole situation better.

The slapping animation does annoy me. I do wish I didn't do that, just looks silly to me.
isn't this a kin to a portrayal of animal cruelty...
...in what way does forcing a giant, fiercely intelligent, free-roaming predatory animal to act as your 'awesome horse' NOT represent animal cruelty? Slapping it on the backside is far less damaging than riding the thing in the first place.

Do you have a pet? A (bigger) dog maybe? Friendly "slapping" your pet is not cruelty, it's a form of petting them and they like it. Such animals have very thick skin.
I have a yeth thing myself however and agree the animation is annoying, I dislike it, regardless of the "cruelty" aspect.
It's really no different from how you get a horse to go, and honestly it's not as forceful as you think.
Plus this is a fantasy universe.

I don't see the problem, to be honest. And I love animals. Why is giving the tiger a little smack to make it go animal cruelty, but riding it into combat is not? Where do you put your tiger when you're not using it? What do you feed it? What do you do when it gets sick or hurt? This is just a game. Talking about animal cruelty is a bit ridiculous, in my opinion. Are we going to discuss feminism next, based on female armor? Sue a giant for dwarf tossing?
You cant apply 21st century animal cruelty conventions into a medievalesque fantasy environment..
Do i agree with animals being overtly pushed in that sense errmm no..
In any fantasy setting you would imagine any form of mount being treated in far worse ways than a casual slap on the ruttocks, horses would be ridden until death in most cases (unless prized stallions etc ) as that would of been the view in that time/environment.
Neverwinter isnt the here and now an thus shouldnt be judged with the same brush.

Disappointed, in that particular animation.
I ride horses. When I need it to go NOW, I sometimes smack it's rump. Same thing. At least your tiger isn't subjected to a riding crop. Think about that for minute: a riding crop. Cruelty to horses?
If 'slapping' a toon animal is animal cruelty then I suppose killing countless toon mobs is murder. Really people? It is just a game. I am against real life cruelty of any kind, but complaining about it on a game is just dumb. I will admit the animations for riding are annoying though, but not enough for me to call the ASPCA.
I find it strange the fact you have nothing better to do then to gripe about a animation on a mount. The fact we kill each other with knifes axes shields and spells and you say smacking of the a@$ bothers you. Go out in public for a change and find something to complain about and then offer a change don't come into fantasy land and mess this up to. ( by the way, I do not post much but this was the straw)

God forbid we play a game where you slay sentient creatures in their 1000's.. oh wait..
I still feel bad about killing poor lizardfolk and destroying their homes.

I raise and tame Sasquatches in my Backyard up here in Canada (many of my neighbours do as well), and I can guarantee you that when I "smack" them in the behind to move, that the last thing on their mind is pain............their hide is about 10 cm thick!!!

^THIS. A THOUSAND times ^THIS.
It's not cruelty, it is just how one rides a mount.
Go watch a video on riding an Elephant in Thailand for example, they hit them with a whip or stick (Bigger than a riding crop). Why? Because they cannot feel a jab from a hind leg through that rough skin and need a light whip to get them going.
I will admit though, I find spurs and spikes to be excessive... even for breaking; And this is from someone who used to kill chickens/ducks/pigs with small arms for "supper" growing up.

what? It's a virtual tiger. You're really going to complain about that instead of the 900 other virtual animals you're lighting on fire, filling with arrows, cutting to ribbons, stabbing, or smiting with the divine power of the gods for 15 experience points?
Look at it this way...Would any animal willingly run down a slalom made of ice and jump logs just to earn the rider some simirils? But I bet no one here had any problem riding their mount down that course.

I agree...I am more annoyed by seeing the actual animation as oppose to anything else.
. . .Yeah, it's not the "cruelty" sentiment that annoys me. It's the constant wildly flinging of my arm that is just strange, goofy looking, and annoying to see.
I speak for the tigers on this one. If it really bothered the tiger you were slapping its rear end, than why doesn't it just buck you off of it's back, pin you down, and tear your face off? If it doesn't react ferociously, it doesn't care.
Even in real life if an animal really doesn't want you doing something... it'll defiantly show you.
EX: Slapping a cat around might cause the cat to start hissing and even retaliate.

If 'slapping' a toon animal is animal cruelty then I suppose killing countless toon mobs is murder.
If I kill you and we're both civilians, it's murder. If I kill you and we're both soldiers on opposing sides, it's war. Big difference. Wait... there's a difference, right? Right?

Sorry for a bit off topic here, but you're right, animals definitely can tell you how they feel. And sometimes, this can lead to rather funny situations. I remember when my niece was young, and sitting in the sofa next to me. She had a doll she loved to play with, and unfortunately, so did my cat. My niece and cat were playing with the doll together, but when my niece wanted to stop playing, the cat got upset and hissed at her. This scared my niece so much she didn't dare take her doll back (she was four), so I grabbed the doll from the cat and gave it to my niece. This made her happy, but the cat was, to put it mildly, pissed off at me. She hissed and tried to scratch and bite me, so I grabbed her angrily, told her "No!" and tossed her on to the floor. This didn't exactly make the cat happier, so she frowned at me, then walked into the kitchen while hissing like a boiling teapot...
... for about ten minutes, when she returned, very slowly and silently. She practically crawled along the floor to the sofa I was sitting in, then barely raised her head and looked at me. The look in her eyes were priceless. We're talking deep, deep regret and humiliation. I smiled at her and patted at the sofa next to me, so the cat jumped up, crawled up to me and carefully put her head on my thigh. I gently stroke her, and she stared purring like a madman. Just like that, we were best friends again.
(and don't worry, she and my niece became friends again, too.)
The point with all that is that animals definitely have a way of telling you what they feel. So if you are worried you smacking the tiger might be animal cruelty, maybe you should think again. What you should be thinking about is your own safety. (and who the heck rides a freakin' tiger anyway?)

The should add "animal feed" that you can give your mount; It could invoke some kind of reaction from the animal, (animation-wise), and perhaps provide some short term buff while riding them - like being able to take an extra hit before being knocked off, or an extra 10% speed buff for an hour or something.

Okay on a more serious note: I agree the animation is kind of goofy-looking. It's the same animation on all "Cats" and the Heavy Howler, too. It's more laughable than annoying because it looks exactly like I'm participating in a Rodeo on a bronco or bull ride or something.
I think my GWF should shout in open chat "Yippie-Kai-Aye!" every time I mount-up.
I reiterate: it's not annoying, it's laughable. Like the gigantic cartoonish Great Sword that is constantly digging irrigation trenches in the ground whenever a Great Weapon Fighter walks by, especially if they're Dwarf or Halfling! Now just imagine that: you, walking around with a big, heavy piece of iron tied to your back, constantly digging up the dirt, concrete, paver-stones and plumping pipes!
Every. Time. You. Move.
Now THAT'S not just cruelty, that's called cruel and unusual punishment. Seriously, them Tigers got is easy!

This made me think of that PETA Pokemon parody game. I am against animal cruelty, but these are pixels, not animals.
I think I understand though. I kinda get attached to my companions, not to the point where I would start a forum thread about it, but I do go out of my way to keep them alive in battles. If there was a way to share my potions with them I would do it.
Think of it this way: it's trained to be ridden on, it's huge and powerful enough to carry a grown person on it's back. It's not gonna hurt it if you give it a nudge to let it know you want it to move. That's what you do when you ride a horse, and as far as I know that's not considered animal cruelty.

I gotta point out that the animation is not beating, its like riding a bucking bull, your hand is flailing because you are being bounced around on an animal that does not have a smooth gape. Despite the grace and speed of cats, they are not long distant open world runners. Tigers especially, they are made to bounce and charge short distances. Its limber back is not ment to support weight like a horse or oxen or other animal, its is intended to be limber and flex to adjust to fleeing prey. Long story short you are going to get bounced around, and whatever limbs that are not used to grasp onto something are going to get bounced wildly.
This forum set up is absolutely horrible, I cant even figure out how to get my knight of the feywild title.
