The current sale likely has little do with it since the weekly sales start on Thursdays.
Hmm...zen speculators buying up in the hope the next sale will spike the prices further? Doesn't seem to likely to me, but it's the best I can come up with right now.

Personally my guess is the 256k rough AD reward. A lot of people, especially casuals have a lot of free AD that they want to convert into zen now that they can get stuff free.
Edit: Wait, that would lower prices, so I guess now that people have lots of AD, less people want to buy AD.

Yup, the main cause of this would be that more people currently have access to more ADs than they normally do.
Do you honestly think the injection of HAMSTER millions of AD into the economy from the Waukeen event will have zero or negative impact on the AD price of Zen?

Ahh. That explains it. The RAD drops didn't even occur to me since I barely noticed a change in my balance.

Yeah... I definitely attribute it to the influx of ADs from the Waukeen event...

We will likely see AH prices for items rise a bit too. It will take a while for all those RAD to be refined and make their way through the economy. Though, it may be better in the long run this way, compared to having them have dropped as already refined AD. That would have been a huge spike to the system; this is more like steady pressure for some weeks.

Depends on the items really. I doubt we'll see prices on the 1mill+ stuff rise, but the cost of the lower demand T2 or the T1 armor quite possibly will.
That's what Cryptic is aiming for, more people with AD, more people buy Zen, Zen sellers spend more RL money to sell Zen. Add the weekly deals as catalyst..Cha Ching!
They have to feed the hamsters somehow.
Personally, I will not buy Zen at the current rate. If the rate doesn't drop in the next month, I'll have all my AD to keep me warm in bed and semi retire all my toons till the next event/module 2/new content/new class...

I'd anticipate further bumping in the exchange rate in the immediate future, as Lillends will be back in profession packs soon.
Next time there's a promotion that inspires people to buy Zen (sale, or something like the transfer rewards), that's when you can expect rates to fall significantly.
I'm thinking it has more to do with the upcoming lillend event than anything else. Anyone else check their in-game calendar?
Yea, this seems fairly well planned. They have an event, get everyone flush with RAD. And even give a few days to allow folks to refine it. Then pow, add in a popular high ticket item to bleed all that new cash back out of the system. This is actually a double one-two punch. Because the profession packs will suddenly be a hot ticket item again, right when people are flush with both cash and high end resources.
I honestly expect Zen prices to start to return to normal shortly after the Lillend event ends.

That's true, I was thinking there was still a few more days until it started. I guess a lot of people have the AD now and the event just means that even more will want to swap it for zen.
It's definitely the Lillend event. The last one caused a significant spike, and this one has the event that put a lot of AD into circulation just before it. People are absolutely dumping their AD for Zen - I dumped about 2.5 million worth because I saw Lillend coming and new it would skyrocket. It's already climbed 30+ points since I did that.
I got a question for you, I'm new to the game and I'm not sure if we are playing beta or not I guess that don't matter much my question is can you earn zen in this game by grinding it out? I'm free to play and can't buy zen so I gotta figure out a way to earn zen. Any help along these lines will be much appreciated.

You can earn Astral Diamonds (ADs) in game from various means, (leadership tasks, invoking, special events, selling stuff on the auction house, etc), and then you can use the Astral Diamond exchange to convert them into Zen, (Z). The AD:Z conversion ratio is player-driven, though...

There is a very active and game-supported Zen-AD exchange market (3rd icon at the top of your screen once you enter the game proper). So, you can convert any and all of your (refined) AD at any time into and out of Zen with no transaction fees in your exchange account. Since AD is the primary currency of the game, you should have zero trouble grinding for it.

Yep, this is the reason. I'm sure the extra AD helps but I knew this event would drive the price of Zen sky high. I have been patiently waiting for this and it is great to see the huge spike before the event even started. I don't even want a Lilland, I just want to cash in all the Zen I bought a few weeks ago as soon as I heard the event would be back again. It has sucked having almost no AD for the past few weeks but the payoff should be nice.

I don't recall the last lillend sale causing a spike at all. The double AD weekend, Tymora event, and Feywild launch right around the end of the sale all caused spikes though and were during that same time.
I very much doubt it's the lillend sale causing the spike this time. Nor the Waukeen event, as prices are continuing to spike after the event is now well over. Yes, it takes time to refine, but it's going up faster now than it did during the event, which makes no sense.
I'd say it's either some players with an awful lot of AD causing the instability or a lack of players buying zen via real money. My money is on the second one.

This player driven zen price i dont think is totally true. Ahhh its the ratio driven by the players and cryptic sets the base cost.

The Lillend event lasted around two weeks last time. As soon as it started the price of Zen shot up and as soon as it ended it dropped back down. I would say most, if not all, of the huge spike was caused by the 100s of people trying to get a Lillend. I am not 100% sure if I remember correctly, but I think the price of Zen hit 400 or more on the Dragon server at the time. If it wasn't 400 it was pretty close and it stayed high throughout the whole event.
This spike happened very suddenly and was most likely caused by the fact that the Lillend event starts tomorrow. I am sure many people bought up all the lower priced Zen so they could flip it for a profit in the next couple of days.

This. Both what happened on Dragon (I don't think it was quite 400, but it got pretty close at times, especially towards the end, and took weeks to go back down), and the fact that people are buying up zen to flip for a profit. We didn't get advance notice on the Lillend last time - it was just suddenly on. This time, we had days' advance notice, and most people who make AD buying/selling Zen remembered what happened last time.

Cryptic has put in place a minimum of 50 AD per Z and a maximum of 500 AD per Z. The actual amount between those limits is determined by players.

Except that most of the items you can buy for Zen are often half the equivalent price in the Auction House.
I think they should have some sort of matchup in the Zen Store that would reflect the current AH price (without being ridiculous of course and let "market makers" bring it down too much, but now the disconnect is so big I don't know anyone who really buy anything in the zen store (except keys maybe...)

This. If you recall zen was about 320 AD right before they started the weekly sales and has steadily climbed since.
- JailBreak (in development)
IIRC it was the end of Feywild Lockbox drops that spurred it up from 320 AD, not the weekly sales. Could be wrong, though.
